Safelet is a Bluetooth personal-safety bracelet, not a standalone cellular alarm. Pressing both side buttons sends an alert through the Safelet app on a nearby, connected smartphone to a user-chosen Guardian Network. Those guardians can receive a notification, view the wearer’s shared location and coordinate a response. The bracelet does not, by default, guarantee an automatic call to 911 or professional emergency monitoring.
What Safelet actually is
Safelet combines four parts: a wrist-worn bracelet, the Safelet mobile app, a Bluetooth Low Energy connection and a group of trusted contacts called the Guardian Network. The bracelet contains a rechargeable battery and charges through USB, according to its FCC equipment filing.
This design makes Safelet a physical panic button for people who already carry a smartphone. It is not equivalent to a medical-alert pendant with its own cellular modem and SIM. The documented alert path requires the phone, Bluetooth, the app and mobile data.
How the alarm is activated
- Press both side buttons at the same time.
- Check the indicator. A green LED briefly lights to indicate activation.
- The app sends the alert. Guardians receive a sound and text notification.
- Guardians view the map. The app can display the wearer’s location, and responding guardians can see one another while moving toward the wearer.
- Guardians decide what to do next. The operating guide says they may hear what is happening and can notify police, but this is guardian-mediated escalation rather than a guaranteed dispatch service.
The button sequence and LED behavior are described in the Safelet user manual. The Google Play listing also describes guardian notifications and map-based location sharing: Safelet for Android.

What must be working for Safelet to work
| Component | What failure means |
|---|---|
| Charged bracelet | A depleted or damaged bracelet may not register the button press. |
| Charged, nearby smartphone | The documented alert route breaks if the phone is absent, dead or outside Bluetooth range. |
| Safelet app and Bluetooth | Missing app permissions, disabled Bluetooth or a broken pairing can prevent transmission. |
| Mobile data | The phone must be able to send the alert to the service; a button press alone is not enough. |
| Location services and permissions | Guardians may not receive usable location information if the phone cannot provide it. |
| Available guardians | An alert does not ensure that anyone will see it, acknowledge it or arrive. |
These dependencies are why Safelet should not be treated as a phone replacement. The safety guide also says the bracelet is not a life-saving device and is not a substitute for contacting emergency services: Safelet safety guide.
Who receives the alert?
You create the Guardian Network by inviting people you trust. Before relying on it, each guardian should have the app installed, notifications enabled, mobile data available and a clear understanding of the response plan. Choose contacts who can realistically answer at the times the wearer may need help; a sleeping, driving or offline guardian is not dependable simply because they are listed in the app.

Separate the stages of a response
- Alert sent: the bracelet and phone pass the activation to the service.
- Alert received: a guardian’s phone displays or sounds the notification.
- Alert acknowledged: a guardian confirms that someone is handling it.
- Help dispatched: a guardian travels toward the wearer or contacts someone else.
- Emergency services contacted: a guardian calls the appropriate local service.
Those are different events. Safelet documentation does not establish that every alert produces automatic police dispatch.
Does Safelet call 911 automatically?
Do not assume it does. The standard operating description is a personal-guardian alert. The safety documentation says a Safelet+ model had an emergency-service capability, while also warning that operation was not guaranteed. Model, country, app version and service terms therefore matter. When possible, the wearer or a guardian should contact local emergency services directly.

Practical setup checklist
- Charge the bracelet and phone.
- Install the Safelet app, sign in and pair the bracelet over Bluetooth.
- Allow the app’s required Bluetooth, notification, mobile-data and location access.
- Invite guardians and confirm that each has accepted.
- Run a test alert when everyone is ready, then confirm who acknowledges it.
- Agree on escalation rules: who calls emergency services, who travels to the wearer and what happens if nobody responds.
- Repeat the test after phone changes, app updates or guardian changes.
The available manuals do not establish a universal cancellation sequence or whether every cancellation generates a guardian notice. Confirm those details in the current app before treating the bracelet as dependable.
Limitations and safety warnings
Connectivity and power
Leaving the phone behind, losing Bluetooth, disabling data or running either battery flat can break the documented alert path. Location display also depends on the phone’s permissions, network and operating-system behavior; the available material confirms location sharing but does not establish a particular accuracy or refresh rate.

Physical damage
The safety guide warns that drops, crushing, puncture, burning and liquid exposure can damage the bracelet. It does not support calling the device waterproof or rugged. Stop using a damaged unit; do not open it, repair it or replace its battery yourself.
Domestic-violence situations
A wearable alarm may be one part of a safety plan, but it can create additional risk if an abuser controls the phone, sees notifications, discovers the bracelet or is included among the guardians. Use an individualized plan from a qualified domestic-violence service rather than assuming one device is safe in every household.

Who is Safelet suited to?
Potentially good fit
- People who routinely carry a charged smartphone.
- Walkers, runners, students and commuters who want a discreet physical trigger.
- Users with several responsive, trusted guardians.
- Families willing to test the alert and maintain batteries and permissions.
Poor fit
- Anyone who often leaves a phone behind or travels beyond reliable data coverage.
- People who require professional monitoring or guaranteed emergency dispatch.
- Users unable to manage charging, Bluetooth pairing or app permissions.
- Situations where the phone or guardian network may be controlled by an abuser.
The product guide states an intended age of 10 and older. That is a documentation limit, not a guarantee of suitability. Children need supervision and a practiced response plan; older adults need to be able to keep the phone nearby, perform the two-button action and recognize whether activation occurred.
Safelet compared with other safety approaches
| Option | Connection and response | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Safelet | Bluetooth bracelet sends through the wearer’s smartphone to personal guardians. | Requires phone, app, data and available contacts; current hardware sales and pricing are not verified. |
| Phone Emergency SOS | Uses the phone’s built-in emergency feature to contact local services or emergency contacts, depending on platform and region. | Usually requires access to the phone or a configured shortcut. |
| Cellular personal alarm | Device has its own cellular connection and may offer professional monitoring. | Usually involves a device fee, service plan and charging routine. |
| Family-monitored GPS device | Shares location with selected contacts over its own or a paired cellular connection. | Coverage, subscription and privacy terms vary. |
| Smartwatch with cellular SOS | Combines wearable controls with cellular or phone-linked emergency features. | Higher purchase cost, battery management and model-specific service requirements. |
For example, SureSafe presents family- and professionally monitored devices, including GPS and fall-detection options, at personalalarms.org/us/products; the page showed products from $74.95 when checked, but plan details can change.
