Apple Watch Ultra 3 is Apple’s rugged, high-end smartwatch, unveiled on September 9, 2025 and available from September 19, 2025. In the U.S., Apple currently lists it from $799. Its headline additions over Ultra 2 are satellite communications, 5G cellular, a larger and brighter display, and longer battery estimates. It is most compelling for iPhone owners who regularly train or travel outdoors; for everyday notifications and workouts, the less expensive Series 11 or SE 3 may be better value.
What is Apple Watch Ultra 3?
Ultra 3 is the largest and most outdoor-focused Apple Watch: a 49mm titanium model built for training, hiking, diving and everyday smartwatch use. It comes in natural or black titanium, with band options including Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band, as well as Hermès configurations. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025 and released it on September 19, 2025, so it is not a newly unveiled product in 2026. Apple’s announcement and current U.S. store listing put the starting price at $799.
It requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Apple Watch is not a general-purpose Android-compatible smartwatch. Not every feature works in every country, language or on every carrier; check the feature and carrier support relevant to where you live before buying.
What changed in Ultra 3?
New hardware and connectivity
- Satellite communications: Satellite options include Emergency SOS, messaging and location sharing, subject to feature, region and service conditions.
- 5G cellular: The watch adds 5G capability. Cellular functions away from an iPhone still require a compatible carrier and an activated plan.
- Display: Apple says the borders are 24% thinner than on the previous generation without changing the case size. The wide-angle OLED is intended to improve off-axis readability, and the always-on display can refresh at 1Hz for supported faces and functions, including ticking seconds.
- Battery and charging: Apple claims up to 42 hours of normal use, versus up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Its estimates also include up to 20 hours of outdoor workout tracking in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings. Apple says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours of battery life and a charge to 80% takes about 45 minutes.
- Antenna design: Apple says both system antennas can be used when needed to improve reception in weak-signal areas. That does not guarantee a connection where coverage is absent.
Health and watchOS features
Ultra 3 supports hypertension notifications and a sleep score, alongside the updated Workout app and watchOS 26 features such as Workout Buddy, Live Translation and suggestions in Messages, Liquid Glass styling, wrist-flick notification dismissal, and on-device Siri access to health data where supported. These are not all Ultra 3-exclusive: software features may also be available on earlier compatible Apple Watches. Workout Buddy depends on Apple Intelligence and applicable device, language and regional requirements. Apple’s announcement describes the new model and its software features.

What Ultra 3’s satellite features actually do
Satellite connectivity is intended to provide a route to emergency services, messaging with friends and family, and location sharing when ordinary cellular or Wi-Fi service is unavailable. Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite does not require a cellular plan. Its announcement says messaging and location-sharing functionality requires an active cellular plan, and that satellite features are free for two years with Ultra 3 under the announced terms.
Availability depends on country, feature, language, regulatory approval and service conditions; it is not universal coverage. The watch needs a sufficiently clear view of the sky and may guide you to orient it toward a satellite. Satellite SOS is not a promise of instant rescue, a substitute for trip planning, or the equivalent of a full satellite phone. For extended remote expeditions or planned two-way communication, a dedicated communicator such as Garmin inReach is a different category of device and may require its own subscription. Wareable’s review and DC Rainmaker’s analysis discuss the practical and regional limits.

How long does the battery last in practice?
Apple’s figures are maximum estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Usage mode matters:
| Use or charge condition | Apple’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Normal use | Up to 42 hours |
| Low Power Mode | Up to 72 hours |
| Outdoor workout in Low Power Mode, full GPS and heart-rate readings | Up to 20 hours |
| 15-minute charge | Up to 12 hours of battery life |
| Charge to 80% | About 45 minutes |
Those Apple estimates are listed in the technical specifications. Independent reviewer DC Rainmaker reported roughly 5–6% battery use per hour in certain GPS workouts, a result tied to that reviewer’s tested conditions rather than a universal rate. GPS duration, cellular use, streaming music, display settings, temperature and workout type can all change consumption. DC Rainmaker, TechRadar and Tom’s Guide offer independent testing and review context.
For a weekend outing, Ultra 3 may last if you manage settings and workout time, but intensive GPS tracking and cellular use reduce the margin. It is not a multi-week watch: if charging access is scarce on a long expedition, Garmin’s outdoor watches are generally a more natural fit.

Fitness, navigation and durability
Ultra 3 combines dual-frequency GPS with running power, heart-rate zones, custom workouts, training load and activity metrics for running, cycling, swimming and hiking. The compass, waypoint watch face and customizable Action button make navigation and workout shortcuts easier to reach. With an activated cellular plan, it can handle calls, messages and music without the iPhone nearby. Apple describes these features on its Ultra 3 product page.
The titanium case, sapphire crystal, 3,000-nit display, IP6X dust resistance and WR100 water rating suit outdoor use. Apple rates the watch for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters and lists a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. It is also designed for swimming, snorkeling and high-speed water sports. The Action button can be assigned to supported functions. Rugged construction is not indestructibility: protect the watch from impacts and use it within the specified water and diving limits.

The 49mm case and prominent display are useful outdoors but make the watch larger and less discreet than standard Apple Watch models. Its size and weight may be uncomfortable on smaller wrists or under close-fitting sleeves, so try the case and band on if fit is a concern.

Health features are not medical diagnoses
Hypertension notifications look for patterns that may suggest chronic high blood pressure; they do not measure blood pressure like a cuff and are not a diagnosis. Use a suitable blood-pressure monitor and consult a clinician for measurement and interpretation.
ECG, heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep-apnea features, temperature sensing, cycle tracking and other health functions can vary by region and regulatory authorization. Treat them as wellness or notification tools, not substitutes for medical care. Apple’s specifications and announcement describe the model’s health features; check local availability before relying on a specific function.

Ultra 3 is a more persuasive upgrade when you will use satellite communications, want 5G, value its larger active display and off-angle readability, or need its higher battery estimates. The new health tools may also matter if they are available where you live and fit your needs.

- Snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rowing, and more — you’ll find tons of additional ways to take your favorite sports and activities to the next level with Ultra 3 in the App Store. Tap in. Max out.
Ultra 2 remains a capable outdoor Apple Watch with titanium construction, GPS, diving features and the core smartwatch experience. If its battery lasts through your routine, you do not need satellite or 5G, and the newer health features are not a reason to switch, keeping it is reasonable. A discounted Ultra 2 can also be better value. For a model-by-model comparison, consult Apple’s comparison tool.
Ultra 3, Series 11 or SE 3?
Apple’s current U.S. lineup lists SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399 and Ultra 3 from $799. Prices can change; these are Apple’s listed starting prices, not a promise about retailer offers. The Apple Store lineup is the source for its current listing.
| Model | Best fit | Why choose it over Ultra 3? |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | Value-focused buyers who want core smartwatch functions | Much lower listed starting price; sensible if rugged construction, diving and satellite features are unnecessary. |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Most everyday iPhone users | Lower listed starting price and a thinner, less bulky design for notifications, workouts, sleep tracking and Apple Pay. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Outdoor athletes, divers and buyers who want Apple’s most rugged feature set | Satellite, dual-frequency GPS, titanium construction, WR100 water resistance, diving support, larger/brighter display and higher battery estimates. |
If your main needs are notifications, routine workouts, sleep tracking and payments, Ultra 3 is difficult to justify on price alone. Its advantages matter most when you will use the outdoor hardware and safety features.
Is Ultra 3 better than a Garmin?
They serve overlapping but different priorities. Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the stronger match for iPhone integration, apps, messaging, payments, calls and a familiar smartwatch interface. Garmin Fenix-class watches are often better suited to users who prioritize longer battery life, physical controls, deep training analytics and platform flexibility. Independent comparisons, including TechRadar’s Fenix 8 comparison and Tom’s Guide’s experience switching watches, illustrate the trade-off; results depend on the exact model and use. Choose by the jobs you need the watch to do, not by treating either brand as a universal winner.
What will ownership cost beyond the watch?
- Cellular: A compatible carrier plan is extra; 5G hardware does not include service. Compare total plan cost over your expected ownership period, including fees and any financing, rather than just the device installment. Carrier pages from Verizon and AT&T show purchase and plan pathways, but offers and service charges change.
- Satellite: Apple announced two years of free satellite communication features with Ultra 3. Check Apple’s current terms for availability and what applies after that period; do not assume all features or service conditions remain unchanged.
- Bands: Band type, size and material affect the fit and the purchase configuration. Match the band to the activity, especially for water use or a secure fit.
- Protection: AppleCare+ is optional. Apple describes its protection options at AppleCare; current local price and terms depend on the live offer.
- Dedicated off-grid gear: A separate satellite communicator can add a device and service subscription, but may make sense for remote expeditions where wrist-based emergency options are not enough.
For a second-hand Ultra 3, check that Activation Lock is removed, inspect battery health, confirm cellular compatibility with your carrier and make sure the model supports the features you need in your region.
