The Apple Watch Ultra’s Action button is a customizable shortcut, not a key you can program with separate single-, double-, and triple-press commands. Assign one main action in Settings, then use Quick Switch to select another configured action when you need it. Here’s how to set it up, what each option and button combination does, and how to avoid common surprises.
What changed—or improved—in watchOS 11?
The Action button remains a physical shortcut on the left side of Apple Watch Ultra models. Apple’s watchOS 11 release notes do not establish a major Action-button redesign, so it is more accurate to treat this as a guide to using the button on watchOS 11—not to claim that watchOS 11 introduced every option described here. Apple’s watchOS 11 release notes are the reference for changes attributed specifically to that release; watchOS 11 became available on September 16, 2024, according to Apple’s announcement.
The practical benefit is being able to launch a frequent task with a physical press and switch to other configured tasks through Quick Switch. That is useful, but it is not multi-press programming: one action is assigned for the ordinary press, and the result of later presses depends on the action and context. Apple’s currently indexed guide is for a later watchOS generation, so labels and available actions may vary with your installed version, model, region, and apps.
How to assign or change the main action
- On the Apple Watch Ultra, open Settings.
- Tap Action Button, then tap Action.
- Select the action you want the button to launch.
- If the screen offers a choice of apps for that action, tap the displayed app and choose the one you prefer.
- Return to the watch face and press the Action button once to check the assignment.
Apple documents configuration on the watch at Settings → Action Button → Action. To remove the assigned action, choose None in the Action menu. If a selected action opens the wrong app, revisit that action’s settings and change the app shown beneath it.

How Quick Switch works
Quick Switch lets you choose a different configured action without returning to Settings. It does not assign separate commands to different press counts.
- Press and hold the Action button until the action-selection screen appears.
- Choose the action you want to use.
To control which options appear, open Settings → Action Button → Quick Switch. Turn individual actions on or off there, or disable Quick Switch. Apple’s current Action button guide documents Quick Switch and the related settings. If an action is missing from the selection screen, check that it is enabled in Quick Switch.

What each Action button option does
Apple documents the following built-in choices. Availability and app choices can differ by watchOS version and installed apps; compatible third-party apps may also appear if their developers support the Action button.
| Action | What the press does | What a later press or combination does |
|---|---|---|
| Workout | Opens Workout or starts the selected workout. | A subsequent press can trigger a workout-specific secondary action. Pressing Action and the side button together pauses the workout. |
| Stopwatch | Starts the stopwatch. | Press again to mark a lap; Action plus side button pauses. |
| Waypoint | Drops a Compass waypoint. | No general second-press behavior is documented. |
| Backtrack | Starts recording a route. | Action plus side button toggles between recording and retracing. |
| Dive | Starts a dive in the selected compatible app. | Action plus side button can perform a secondary action supported by that dive app. |
| Flashlight | Turns the flashlight on. | Press again to turn it off. |
| Shortcut | Runs the selected Shortcut. | Any further behavior depends on that Shortcut. |
| Voice Memo | Starts recording. | Press again to stop recording. |
| Translate | Starts translating. | Press again to stop translating. |
| Accessibility | Turns on the selected accessibility feature. | Press again to turn it off. |
| Recognize Music | Starts listening for music. | Press again to stop listening. |
| None | Disables the assigned Action-button action. | No action is assigned. |
For the available assignments and their setup, see Apple’s Action button instructions. Secondary behavior is action-specific; there is no universal double-press command.

Which action should you choose?
- Runners, cyclists, and regular exercisers: Choose Workout if starting or controlling exercise is the task you need fastest. Workout-specific secondary actions vary with the workout, and third-party app support depends on the app’s implementation.
- Hikers and other outdoor users: Choose Waypoint to mark a location quickly, or Backtrack when you want to record a route so you can retrace it. Start Backtrack before you need to retrace your route; do not assume it can reconstruct a route you did not record.
- Divers: Choose Dive if you regularly use a compatible dive app. If several options are available, select the preferred app in Action Button settings.
- Everyday users: Flashlight is a direct on/off shortcut. Voice Memo, Translate, and Recognize Music suit people who use those tasks often enough to want a physical control.
- Accessibility users: Assign the accessibility feature you want to toggle directly, then confirm that it turns on and off as expected.
- Shortcut users: Choose Shortcut for a workflow that combines tasks, provided the Shortcut and its actions are available on the watch. Test it from the watch before relying on it.
If one task matters more than the others, assign it as the primary action for immediate access and reserve Quick Switch for occasional alternatives. Apple’s Action button design guidance describes the platform’s intended behavior, including workout secondary actions.
Button combinations, workout controls, and Siren safety
Action button plus the side button
Pressing the Action button and side button together has context-specific results rather than one global function. During a workout, the combination pauses it; with Backtrack, it switches between recording and retracing; in a supported dive app, it can invoke that app’s secondary action. Apple’s Action button guide describes these controls.

Workout secondary actions
A later Action-button press during a workout can mark a segment or transition to another workout modality, depending on the workout and app. Do not assume every third-party workout app implements the same controls. Apple provides developers with App Intents for Action button integration; see its developer guidance.
Long press and Siren
Long-press behavior can involve safety features, including Siren. If you do not want holding the Action button to turn on Siren, look for Hold to Turn On under Action Button settings and turn it off. Avoid testing a long press where an unintended Siren could alarm others. If the watch presents an on-screen cancellation control before the Siren sounds, use it to cancel. Apple’s current guide documents the setting; its button and safety overview explains related controls.

Troubleshooting an unavailable or unexpected action
Action Button settings are missing
First check on the watch itself: Settings → Action Button. The Action button is a feature of Apple Watch Ultra models, not standard Apple Watch models. The available menu can also depend on watchOS and installed apps. A third-party app must expose the appropriate integration to appear as an option; Apple explains this requirement in its App Intents documentation.
The wrong app opens
- Open Settings on the watch and tap Action Button.
- Select the action in question.
- Tap the app shown beneath it, then choose the preferred app.
A second press does something unexpected—or nothing
Check the action’s row in the table above: a second press is not a universal double-press shortcut. Some tasks use the second press to stop or toggle, Workout behavior depends on the active workout, and certain functions require pressing Action and the side button together.
The watch pauses during a workout
You may have pressed the Action and side buttons together, which Apple documents as a workout pause control. Resume the workout in its on-screen controls.
A Shortcut fails
- Run the Shortcut manually from the Shortcuts app on the watch.
- Check that it has the required permissions and that its actions are supported on watchOS.
- Check whether it depends on the iPhone, an internet connection, location access, or a third-party app.
- Re-select the Shortcut under Settings → Action Button → Action.
- If the assignment looks correct but still does nothing, restart the watch and test again.
Shortcuts can combine actions, but they do not automatically reassign the Action button based on time, Focus, location, or battery state merely because a Shortcut is assigned.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAction button versus Double Tap
Double Tap is a hand gesture, not another Action-button press pattern. Apple documents Double Tap for Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later; watchOS 11 lets developers designate an app’s primary action for the gesture. See Apple’s Double Tap developer documentation for its separate requirements and behavior.
