The third-party Apple Watch app launched in March 2023 to let users send voice or text prompts to OpenAI’s ChatGPT service. It was never made by OpenAI, and it was later renamed Petey. Today, Petey is the relevant app to look for—not “watchGPT”—although similarly named apps such as WristWhiz are separate products.
What was watchGPT?
watchGPT was a dedicated Apple Watch client for asking ChatGPT questions from the wrist. Its launch features included voice and text input, generated answers, sharing through messages, email or social networks, and a watch-face complication for quick access. Voice input mattered because composing long text on a small watch display is inconvenient.
The app launched in March 2023. U.S. launch coverage reported a one-time price of $3.99, with a €4.99 price reported for Europe. Early versions were limited: reports described a one-question-at-a-time workflow, with fuller conversations and additional features expected in later updates. Is watchGPT still available?
Not under that original name. The app became Petey. Contemporary reporting linked the rebrand to App Store and trademark concerns around the term “GPT”; that explanation should be treated as reporting about the change, not as proof that Apple categorically banned every app using the term. The rebrand was covered by 9to5Mac and Daring Fireball.

Search the App Store for Petey – AI Chat and check the developer and listing before downloading. Searching only for “watchGPT” can surface unrelated utilities.
Is Petey an official OpenAI Apple Watch app?
No. Petey is a third-party app that provides access to OpenAI-powered models or APIs; it is not OpenAI’s official ChatGPT app for watchOS. The original developer was identified in launch coverage as Hidde van der Ploeg, while the current App Store listing identifies the developer as Pencil Research.

Model labels can change. Historical App Store text mentions GPT-4 and GPT-4o, while Petey’s current subscription language is broader. Do not assume a particular model is included without checking the version and purchase terms shown in the app.

Compatibility and installation
The U.S. App Store listing available on August 16, 2026 describes Petey as a free download with in-app purchases for Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad. It requires iOS 16.5 or later and watchOS 9.6 or later. Those are software requirements, not a complete Apple Watch Series list; your watch must also support the required watchOS release.

Use this general installation path:
- On the paired iPhone, open the App Store and search for Petey – AI Chat.
- Confirm the listing identity, developer and regional in-app purchase terms.
- Install the iPhone app and its Apple Watch component.
- Open the iPhone’s Watch app and check the available-apps section if Petey does not install automatically; choose its Install option when shown.
- Open Petey on the watch and grant requested permissions.
- Ask a question using dictation, Scribble or another input method offered by the current release.
- Add Petey through watch-face customization if you want a complication.

Does it work without an iPhone?
Installation on the watch does not guarantee universal standalone operation. A response may depend on a paired iPhone connection, Wi‑Fi, cellular service on a cellular watch, and Petey’s current watchOS implementation. Cloud ChatGPT services cannot answer new prompts with no network connection. If the watch cannot connect through the phone or a network, expect the request to fail or wait.

Do you need an OpenAI account or API key?
The original launch was promoted as avoiding complicated API-key setup. Petey now presents two distinct access routes:

- Petey-managed access: use the service through Petey’s own plan or purchase.
- Bring your own key: enter an OpenAI API key and accept responsibility for OpenAI API billing, quota, permissions and model availability.
A ChatGPT Plus subscription is a separate product from OpenAI API billing. Having Plus does not automatically pay for third-party API requests, so check which billing path Petey is using before subscribing twice.

Prices vary by country, taxes, purchase name and time. On the developer’s site, Petey Premium was listed at $6.99 per month or $59.99 per year when checked for the U.S. market on August 16, 2026. The App Store also displays in-app purchases and legacy-related options. Treat the checkout screen in your region as authoritative.

What is an Apple Watch AI assistant good for?
Petey is most useful as a quick-answer interface:
- Ask a short factual question while walking or working.
- Translate a phrase.
- Draft a brief reply.
- Generate a quick idea, checklist or concise explanation.
- Hear an answer through text-to-speech.
- Use a complication instead of opening several apps.
A phone or computer remains better for long prompts, documents, images, citations, editing and detailed research. Voice recognition can also mishear names and technical terms. For timers, alarms, messages and smart-home controls, Siri may be faster.
Connectivity, accuracy and privacy limits
- Network dependence: new cloud responses require Wi‑Fi, cellular data or a working iPhone connection.
- Current information: do not assume live web search, current news or source-backed answers unless the current app explicitly provides those functions.
- Accuracy: language models can hallucinate. Do not rely on an unverified watch answer for medical, legal, financial or safety-critical decisions.
- Small display: long answers are awkward to read, making concise prompts and responses the practical format.
- Privacy: the App Store privacy label is supplied by the developer and has not been independently verified by Apple. “No data collected” should not be read as a guarantee that Apple, OpenAI, network providers or other services never process information.
- Sensitive data: review Petey’s privacy policy, OpenAI’s applicable data controls, Apple’s disclosures and any API-key storage behavior before entering confidential material.
Troubleshooting common problems
You cannot find watchGPT
Search for Petey – AI Chat instead and verify the current developer and listing. A result containing “WatchGPT” may be a different app.
It installs on the iPhone but not the watch
- Check that the watch can run watchOS 9.6 or later.
- Confirm the watch and iPhone are paired correctly.
- Open the iPhone’s Watch app and look for Petey in available apps.
- Check whether automatic app installation is disabled or whether regional availability differs.
The watch returns an error or no answer
- Check Wi‑Fi, cellular service or the iPhone connection.
- Reopen Petey and check for an app or watchOS update.
- Confirm an active Petey plan or valid API key.
- For a personal key, check OpenAI billing, quota, permissions and model access.
- Check Petey’s service status or support information before assuming the watch is defective.
Petey or WristWhiz?
WristWhiz is a separate app, despite using “WatchGPT” in its name. Its U.S. listing advertises voice interaction, a complication, conversation features and multiple languages, with a $2.99 price signal and watchOS 9.1 compatibility. Petey is the direct continuation of the original watchGPT product and offers the broader cross-device feature set described above.
Those listings do not establish that either app is faster, more accurate or more private. Choosing between them is mainly a question of identity, features, pricing and software compatibility—not a proven performance ranking.
Verdict
If you already own a compatible Apple Watch and want brief, voice-first AI answers without reaching for your phone, Petey is the current product to investigate. It is not an official OpenAI app, it needs network access for cloud answers, and its current subscription or API-key costs may be excessive for occasional use. Check the live App Store listing and Petey’s terms before paying, and use a phone or computer when the task needs long context, reliable current sources or careful editing.
