Apple used two dates, not one, for its 2024 software rollout. iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and macOS Sequoia became free updates on September 16, 2024. The first Apple Intelligence features followed on October 28, 2024, through iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple Intelligence was a beta feature set with hardware, language and regional limits, so installing iOS 18 or watchOS 11 alone did not provide the complete AI experience.
The complete Apple software timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 10, 2024 | Apple previewed iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia and Apple Intelligence at WWDC24. Developer betas began through Apple’s developer program. Apple’s iOS 18 announcement |
| July 2024 | Apple scheduled public betas for the following month. Beta software could change and was not equivalent to a stable release. |
| September 16, 2024 | iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and macOS Sequoia became available as free updates. Apple’s availability announcement |
| October 28, 2024 | The first Apple Intelligence feature set became available in beta through iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple Intelligence availability |
Apple said additional Intelligence capabilities would arrive in later updates. The September operating-system launch therefore should not be described as a full Apple Intelligence launch.
What iOS 18 delivered on September 16
- More flexible Home Screen placement for apps and widgets.
- A more customizable Control Center.
- A redesigned Photos experience.
- New Messages effects and satellite messaging when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable.
- Mail categorization and other organizational changes.
Apple’s original compatibility statement supported iPhone XS and later. That broad iOS 18 list was not the Apple Intelligence list: the initial AI-capable phones were iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 lineup. See Apple’s iOS 18 feature and compatibility announcement.
What iPadOS 18 delivered
- Calculator on iPad, including Math Notes for handwritten or typed equations.
- Smart Script and other Notes improvements.
- Home Screen and Control Center customization.
- Additional iPad productivity and personalization changes previewed at WWDC24.
Apple Intelligence was a separate eligibility question. The first feature set required an iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later; an iPad capable of running iPadOS 18 did not automatically qualify. Apple’s WWDC overview is at WWDC24 highlights.

What watchOS 11 delivered
watchOS 11 launched on September 16 alongside the iPhone, iPad and Mac updates. Its changes focused on Apple Watch rather than the iPhone/iPad/Mac AI stack:
- New health and fitness capabilities.
- More personalization options.
- Smart Stack improvements and related watchOS changes.
Apple did not position Apple Intelligence as a watchOS 11 launch feature. The initial AI announcement named iPhone, iPad and Mac, so an Apple Watch running watchOS 11 should not be expected to offer the same Writing Tools, Siri and image-generation features. Release context is recorded in Apple’s September 2024 Newsroom archive and its iPhone 16 and Apple Watch announcement.

What macOS Sequoia delivered
- iPhone Mirroring.
- Safari Highlights.
- The new Passwords app.
- Videoconferencing improvements, including Presenter Preview.
- Scheduled Messages.
- Notes transcription and Math Notes.
- Gaming and Continuity improvements.
macOS Sequoia itself became available September 16. Apple Intelligence arrived later in macOS Sequoia 15.1, released October 28. Macs with Intel processors could support Sequoia where Apple allowed, but Apple Intelligence required an M1 chip or later. Apple’s feature announcement is at macOS Sequoia takes productivity and intelligence on Mac to new heights.

Hardware required for the first feature set
| Product | Initial Apple Intelligence models |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 lineup |
| iPad | Models with A17 Pro or M1 and later |
| Mac | Models with M1 and later |
| Apple Watch | Not listed as a host for the initial Apple Intelligence feature set |
Language, region and beta limits
At the October launch, Apple required the device and Siri language to be set to U.S. English. Localized English and additional languages were planned for later updates. Availability could vary by region, language, device and the particular feature, and Apple described the initial release as beta.
How ChatGPT fit in
ChatGPT integration was optional, not a replacement for Siri and not a requirement for Apple Intelligence. Apple said users could access it without creating an account; connecting an account brought OpenAI’s data-use policies into play. Apple described on-device processing as the default approach, with more demanding requests handled through Private Cloud Compute. These are Apple’s stated privacy and architecture claims, detailed in its October 2024 announcement.

| watchOS 11 | September 16, 2024 | Not presented as an Apple Intelligence host | Check Apple’s model-specific watchOS compatibility information. |
| macOS Sequoia | September 16, 2024 | Mac with M1 and later | An Intel Mac could support Sequoia where eligible but not Apple Intelligence. |
