AsteroidOS 2.0 is an open-source, Linux-based operating system for selected smartwatches. Announced on 17 February 2026, it adds features including an always-on display, tilt-to-wake, palm-to-sleep, heart-rate monitoring and initial step counting—but compatibility and feature support depend on the exact watch model.
What AsteroidOS 2.0 adds
The AsteroidOS Team’s 17 February 2026 release announcement describes changes to watch functions, interface controls and synchronization. It reports rendering, battery-life and stability optimizations, but publishes no benchmark results for those claims.
- Display and gestures: always-on display, tilt-to-wake and palm-to-sleep.
- Health and sensors: a heart-rate-monitor app, initial step-counting support and compass support.
- Controls and interface: music-volume control, a customizable QuickPanel, seven additional launcher styles, watch-face and wallpaper presentation changes, and nightstand mode.
- Connectivity and apps: Bluetooth HID and audio support, plus new flashlight and Diamonds game apps and refinements to the timer and calculator.
- Synchronization and localization: an updated Android client, initial support in Gadgetbridge, and mention of Amazfish and Telescope clients. The announcement says 2.0 includes translations for 49 languages and that more than 20 languages were added since the previous release.
These are project-published release details, not a guarantee that every listed feature works on every supported watch. The announcement also reports additions to the supported-watch roster since version 1.0, but the current device directory and model-specific pages are the practical references for checking a particular watch.
Can my watch run AsteroidOS?
Check the exact model number, not just the brand or product family. AsteroidOS maintains a watch directory that separates supported devices from experimental ones and links to their instructions and feature status. Its feature matrix labels individual hardware functions as good, bad, partial, unknown or not present. Those labels describe hardware support; they do not establish that every software workflow has been tested.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Examples of why the exact model matters
- TicWatch Pro: the project identifies WF12096 as TicWatch Pro 2018 (
catfish), WF12106 as TicWatch Pro 2020 (catfish_ext) and WF11018 as cellular TicWatch Pro LTE (catshark). Its TicWatch Pro page marks dual-display support partial: the secondary LCD can show time and steps when enabled from the command line, but those modes cannot be enabled in the UI. GPS works oncatfishandcatfish_ext; it does not work on cellularcatsharkbecause the GPS is integrated into an unsupported modem. - Fossil Gen 6: the feature matrix identifies
hokias having good display, touch, Bluetooth, haptics, tilt-to-wake, always-on display and heart-rate hardware. It lists microphone, blood oxygen, speaker, WLAN and GPS as unsupported, and USB/NFC as partial.
A watch can therefore be listed as supported while still lacking hardware functions you expect. Before choosing a device, check the matrix row and the installation page for the precise model.
Supported versus experimental
Experimental does not mean a safe everyday alternative to a supported device. AsteroidOS marks experimental entries separately and says they are unsuitable for recommended everyday use. Its 2.0 announcement lists Casio WSD-F10/F20, LG Watch Urbane 2, Moto 360 2014, Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Live as experimental, citing device-specific concerns such as reports of bricking, missing features, instability or power management, and display issues. The project also says it demoted the Sony Smartwatch 3 because hardware problems remained unresolved.

The project’s porting-status page explains that Wear OS watches are a priority partly because kernel sources are often accessible and libhybris can help use proprietary drivers. It also records failed or impossible ports; running Linux on a watch is not, by itself, enough to make that watch portable.
How to check a watch before installing
- Find the exact model number on the watch, its packaging or its original device documentation. Do not treat a family name such as “TicWatch Pro” as a complete compatibility check.
- Look up that model in the official watch directory. Confirm whether it is supported or experimental and open its model-specific page.
- Check the feature matrix for the functions you rely on, such as GPS, cellular, speaker, microphone, heart-rate hardware, WLAN, USB, NFC or a secondary display.
- Read the model’s installation and recovery instructions before unlocking anything. Confirm that you understand the temporary-boot or replacement path and have a recovery plan appropriate to that watch.
For example, the project identifies TicWatch Pro 2020 model WF12106 as supported under catfish_ext. That does not establish compatibility for every TicWatch Pro listing or similarly named model; verify the number and condition of any device before buying it for AsteroidOS.

What installation involves
AsteroidOS watch instructions use a computer-side ADB/Fastboot process and require an unlocked bootloader. The steps are device-specific, so use the page for the exact watch rather than applying one model’s commands to another.
Try it temporarily or replace Wear OS
On many watches, a temporary installation or dual-boot option lets you try AsteroidOS without replacing Wear OS. The TicWatch Pro instructions say this approach requires manually booting AsteroidOS after each restart. A full installation replaces Wear OS; the project advises backing up the original system first and warns that recovery may not be possible without that backup.

Data and warranty risks
The TicWatch Pro instructions warn that unlocking the bootloader can erase Wear OS user data and may void the warranty. They also warn against relocking the bootloader while AsteroidOS is installed. Treat these as device-specific cautions, and read the current instructions for your model before proceeding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you give up compared with Wear OS
AsteroidOS is Linux, not Android. The project’s FAQ says Android and Wear OS apps cannot run on it, and there is no app store yet; contributed apps must be installed manually. The FAQ also names answering calls from the watch and using cellular-capable watches as phones among functions not currently provided.

A phone is not required for basic use, according to the project FAQ. Pairing a synchronization client adds convenience, with the available options depending on platform: AsteroidOS Sync and Gadgetbridge for Android, or Amazfish for Ubuntu Touch. The project says there is no iPhone app, though notifications can be shared using its documented method. Its FAQ names Telescope among the synchronization clients as well.
Privacy and battery claims
The project FAQ says AsteroidOS collects no tracking data, requires no account and that nothing in the default installation can connect to the internet unless the user explicitly sets up that connectivity. This is the project’s statement, not an independent security audit.
AsteroidOS’s homepage describes “up to 48 hours of autonomy.” Its FAQ gives a broad “1-4 days” range when comparing Linux smartwatch hardware with low-power microcontroller watches. Neither figure is presented with a standardized test protocol or model-by-model AsteroidOS 2.0 results in those pages, so they should not be read as a battery-life guarantee for a particular watch.
