The figure was not an independently verified count of valid accounts, and the available evidence does not establish that Fitbit’s own systems were breached. The report describes login credentials—not Fitbit health data.
What did the 2020 Fitbit report claim?
HackerNoon’s February 11, 2020 article, “2 Million Fitbit Accounts Were Exposed by Cybercriminals”, said a user on a hacker forum posted email addresses and passwords for 1,999,999 Fitbit users. Its headline rounded that figure to two million.
That number is the article’s reported claim, not a confirmed count of working credentials or accounts accessed by criminals. A 2022 Florida State University Law Review article later cited the HackerNoon report, but that citation is not separate forensic verification of the dataset. The sources available do not establish how many credentials were valid or whether anyone used them to take over an account.
Were Fitbit accounts hacked?
The report says credentials associated with Fitbit users were posted online; it does not establish that attackers broke into Fitbit’s production systems. The list’s origin is unresolved. It is also unknown whether the credentials were current, how they were obtained, or whether any account holders were successfully targeted.

Google’s general account-security guidance notes that attackers may try passwords reused from other websites or credentials collected using malware such as keyloggers. Those are general risks, not verified explanations for the 2020 list. There is no named Fitbit or Google spokesperson statement in the available sources confirming a company-side breach or explaining the dataset.
What Fitbit information was reported exposed?
The 2020 article describes email addresses and passwords. It does not say that the list included step counts, sleep records, location history, heart rate, payment-card details, or other health information. Do not treat separate reports about exposed wearable-data databases as evidence about this credential list.

Google’s current Google Health privacy FAQ describes information the service may handle, including activity and wellness data such as steps, distance, calories, weight, heart rate, sleep stages, and active minutes. Location may be collected for selected features when permission is granted, and connected third-party services can provide information too. Those general descriptions concern current service data handling; they do not show what was in the 2020 post.
What should you do if you reused a Fitbit password or suspect account takeover?
- Change any reused password. If the same password protected Fitbit and another account, replace it on every service where you used it. Choose a different password for each account. Google’s official guidance says, “Make sure you use a different password for every online account.”
- Change the Fitbit password if you can still sign in. If you suspect compromise, Google advises: “If you still have access to your account, change your password to a new, unique password that you’ve never used before.”
- Turn on two-factor authentication where available. Google recommends two-factor authentication as an additional account-protection step.
- Use a trusted route for password resets. If you receive an unexpected reset email, start the reset from the Fitbit app or fitbit.com rather than following an unsolicited link.
- Contact Fitbit customer support if you are locked out. Do this if you cannot access the account or discover that its email address has been changed.
These steps follow Google Health Help Center’s current account-takeover guidance; they do not establish that a particular reader’s account was part of the 2020 list.

Does a Fitbit account expose your credit-card details?
Google’s current support page says account credentials do not let an attacker view a user’s credit-card details through the Fitbit account. The same page describes warranty replacement fraud attempts, says account holders are not charged for the replacement, and says many attempts are detected and referred to law enforcement. This is Google’s description of its current support guidance, not evidence that every historical account incident involved such fraud.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changed for Fitbit accounts after the report?
Google says legacy Fitbit-account access ended on May 19, 2026; continued access required moving the account to Google. It also says users who did not move could download or delete their data before deletion processing began on July 15, 2026. These are later account-transition dates, not part of the 2020 exposure. Google’s privacy FAQ describes the transition.

Separately, Google’s current Google Health & Data Privacy page says users can export or delete health data through settings and that Google remains committed not to use Fitbit users’ health and wellness data for Google Ads. These are current product and policy statements, not proof of what security controls or policies applied in 2020. In an April 11, 2023 transition announcement, Google VP of Engineering Majd Bakar wrote: “Your Fitbit health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads, and it will continue to be kept separate from Google Ads data.”
