The watch that came before the British Army’s later “Dirty Dozen” was the Army Trade Pattern (ATP): a military watch specification ordered in 1939 and supplied by 17 Swiss manufacturers. The twelve-maker WWW watches followed in 1945 as a replacement. ATP watches are less discussed by collectors, but they were not a single-brand model or an obscure afterthought in the wartime timeline.
What does ATP mean?
ATP stands for Army Trade Pattern. It refers to watches made to a British military procurement pattern, not to one manufacturer’s model. The Ministry of Defence contracted 17 Swiss suppliers in 1939: Buren, Cortebert, Cyma, Ebel, Enicar, Eterna, Font, Grana, Lemania, Leonidas, Moeris, Reconvillier, Record, Revue, Rotary, Timor and Unitas. The supplier spelling “Reconvillier” is as reported by Time+Tide; period documentation would be needed to verify it independently.
Time+Tide’s ATP history gives the maker list and describes the watches’ specifications. As with any broad list of suppliers, it should not be mistaken for a maker-by-maker guide to every surviving example.
When did ATP watches come before the Dirty Dozen?
The procurement sequence is the key distinction: the ATP order dates to 1939, while the later WWW watches were commissioned in 1945 as a replacement. ATP watches therefore predate the WWW program and served during the earlier part of the war. Watch writer Fergus Nash characterized the ATP as “the ATP watch doing the heavy lifting” in his Time+Tide account; that is his description, not an official military quotation.

“Dirty Dozen” is a later collector nickname for the group of twelve WWW makers, rather than the name of the ATP pattern. Fratello dates the delivery of the WWW watches to the second half of 1945 and estimates that the twelve makers supplied around 150,000 watches. Time+Tide gives an estimate of approximately 145,000 WWW watches, while reporting 133,600 ATP units. These are secondary-source estimates, not a reconciled official procurement tally.
How does an ATP differ from a Dirty Dozen WWW watch?
Both belong to British military-watch history, but they represent different procurement programs. The useful distinctions are their date, dial specification, general size and supplier group—not a blanket claim that one watch was better or that every example was used identically.

| Feature | Army Trade Pattern (ATP) | Later WWW (“Dirty Dozen”) |
|---|---|---|
| Procurement | British order placed in 1939 | Commissioned in 1945 as a replacement |
| Suppliers | 17 Swiss makers, as listed by Time+Tide | 12 makers, as listed by Fratello |
| Dial | ATP examples are described as having silver or white dials | The WWW specification called for a black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous reading and a railroad minute track |
| General size | Time+Tide says cases were mostly about 31 mm; examples varied | Fratello describes WWW cases at about 35–38 mm |
| Movement and performance | The cited ATP account gives a 15-jewel requirement and accuracy of ±30 seconds per day when tested in four positions | Not stated in the cited WWW chronology and specification summary |
The measurements are general descriptions, not limits that identify every surviving watch. Time+Tide notes that stainless steel was common among ATP cases, with some larger chrome-plated examples. Fratello gives a broader 30–34 mm ATP range, illustrating how summaries can vary with the examples being described. The clearest visual contrast is the light ATP dial versus the black-dial WWW requirement; case size alone is not a reliable identifier.

How many ATP and WWW watches were made?
Published totals should be treated as estimates. Time+Tide reports 133,600 ATP units and approximately 145,000 WWW units, both in its article published around 2023. Fratello’s 2023 history estimates around 150,000 WWW watches delivered in the second half of 1945. The two WWW estimates differ; the available accounts do not establish one definitive, reconciled total.
Production totals can give historical scale, but they do not establish the rarity, originality or value of a particular watch. An individual’s condition, parts and documentation matter more to a collector than a broad estimate alone.

What should collectors check on a surviving ATP?
Some surviving ATPs were repaired or reassembled by the Ministry of Defence with non-original components; some were re-cased or re-dialled. A broad arrow or ATP-related marking can be a useful historical clue, but it is not enough on its own to prove that a watch remains in original configuration.
- Consider the dial, case, movement and markings together rather than relying on a single feature.
- Look for service history and supporting provenance where available; repairs and mixed parts can complicate an otherwise plausible appearance.
- For an important purchase or attribution, seek a specialist assessment. The cited coverage does not provide a complete archival catalogue or maker-by-maker serial-number guide.
Hodinkee’s collecting overview discusses the later WWW group and provides context for assessing military-watch examples. It should not be read as a definitive authentication guide for every ATP.

Why is the ATP less famous?
The later WWW watches are commonly grouped under the memorable “Dirty Dozen” nickname, while ATP refers to an earlier, multi-maker procurement pattern. That difference in naming helps explain why the WWW group is easier to recognize in popular watch coverage. ATP watches are also described as surviving in varied and sometimes altered condition. Those facts offer context for their lower visibility, but they do not prove a single cause or mean that ATPs went unnoticed by all collectors.
Is a modern ATP-style watch an original?
No. A contemporary watch inspired by the ATP pattern is a modern interpretation, not a wartime ATP. Wallpaper* reported in 2026 on Timor’s Heritage Field ATP, including a stated 36.5 mm case size and the owner’s description of its relationship to the historical specification. That report concerns the modern design, not the dimensions of every original ATP or current availability. See Wallpaper*’s feature on reissued military-watch designs.
