The BALL Engineer III Marvelight Chronometer 40mm is a Swiss-made automatic watch built around a COSC-certified chronometer movement, 904L stainless steel, 100-meter water resistance and self-powered micro gas-tube illumination. Standard references use the BALL RR1103-C caliber; the limited PM9026C-S3C-BE2 uses RR1702-C and has a thicker case plus a different tube layout.

Case, dimensions and wrist fit
The standard model measures 40mm across, 12.45mm high, weighs approximately 180g, and uses 20mm lugs. Its lug-to-lug distance is 46.6mm. That last measurement is especially useful for judging overhang: a 40mm diameter can still wear large or compact depending on the distance between the lugs and the case shape.
The limited PM9026C-S3C-BE2 keeps the 40mm diameter but is 13.75mm thick. That additional height, together with its bracelet and mechanical movement, gives it a more substantial wrist presence than the standard 40mm references.

Movement and COSC certification
Standard 40mm references use the automatic BALL RR1103-C; the limited PM9026C-S3C-BE2 uses the RR1702-C. Both are identified by BALL as COSC-certified chronometer movements.
COSC certification concerns the precision performance of the tested movement under the institute’s testing regime. It does not certify the watch’s water resistance, resistance to shocks, or protection from magnetic fields. Those are separate engineering claims and should be assessed independently.

Night visibility: how the tritium tubes work
BALL uses micro gas tubes for self-powered illumination. They do not need exposure to a lamp or daylight before use, so the hands and markers can remain readable in darkness without relying on a conventional luminous-paint charge. BALL summarizes the purpose with the line, “Light always conquers darkness.”

Tube counts by reference
- Standard 40mm references: 14 micro gas tubes.
- PM9026C-S3C-BE2 limited edition: 27 micro gas tubes.
The published specifications provide tube counts, but not a laboratory brightness figure in candelas per square metre or a timed brightness-decay test. Therefore, “how bright” should be understood as a question of persistent, self-powered readability rather than a quantified brightness rating. Do not assume every 40mm Marvelight has the 27-tube layout.
Protection for daily use
Water resistance
Both the standard and limited specifications list 100m (330ft) water resistance. This is a construction rating, not a guarantee against every real-world exposure; crowns, gaskets and seals still require proper condition and servicing.

Magnetic fields
The standard reference is rated to 1,000 gauss (80,000 A/m). The limited model is listed at 80,000 A/m. This protection is intended to reduce the effect of magnetic fields on the movement; it is distinct from COSC timing certification.
Shock resistance
Both variants list 5,000Gs shock resistance. That figure addresses impact protection, not permission to subject the watch deliberately to extreme impacts or sporting abuse.

Is it a good everyday watch?
For an owner who wants a compact mechanical watch with strong stated resistance figures, the Marvelight is well suited to everyday wear. Its 40mm diameter, 46.6mm standard lug-to-lug and 100m water-resistance rating are practical dimensions and capabilities, while sapphire and 904L steel are appropriate choices for a frequently worn watch. Automatic winding, a date display and persistent night visibility add utility rather than decoration alone.
There are trade-offs. At approximately 180g on the standard bracelet, it is not a lightweight watch. The limited model is 13.75mm thick, and neither COSC certification nor the 5,000Gs rating removes the need for normal mechanical-watch care. Buyers who want a slim, low-profile dress watch should look elsewhere; buyers who value legibility, anti-magnetic protection and a robust bracelet watch get a more convincing fit.
