The Small Change That Makes a Big Difference: Rolex Explorer II 226570

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—the Rolex Explorer II 226570’s meaningful upgrade is its movement. Rolex replaced the 216570’s calibre 3187 (approximately 48 hours of power reserve) with calibre 3285, rated at approximately 70 hours. The case remains 42 mm, but narrower lugs and a broader Oyster bracelet subtly change the fit. That combination preserves the Explorer II’s familiar identity while making it easier to live with in a rotating collection.

What is the Rolex Explorer II 226570?

The 226570 is the current 42 mm Oystersteel Explorer II. Its fixed, graduated 24-hour bezel surrounds a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a Cyclops date lens, and the case is rated water-resistant to 100 metres. Inside is Rolex automatic calibre 3285, specified to run at -2/+2 seconds per day after casing and to provide approximately 70 hours of power reserve.

Rolex describes the watch as an Oyster Perpetual Explorer II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet, a black dial, an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand and Chromalight display. A white-dial version, commonly called the “Polar,” is also available.

The small change: calibre 3285 and its 70-hour reserve

226570 versus 216570

Specification Explorer II 226570 Explorer II 216570
Movement Rolex calibre 3285, automatic GMT Rolex calibre 3187, automatic
Stated power reserve Approximately 70 hours Approximately 48 hours
Case diameter 42 mm Oystersteel 42 mm Oystersteel
Bezel Fixed 24-hour graduated bezel Fixed 24-hour graduated bezel
Water resistance 100 m Not stated in the supplied specification

The reserve figures are published specifications, not independent timing or endurance tests. In practical terms, roughly 70 hours should let the watch sit from Friday evening through Monday morning and still be running, whereas a roughly 48-hour movement is more likely to stop during that interval. Whether that convenience matters depends on how often you rotate watches, but it is the clearest functional improvement over the 216570.

How the Explorer II GMT hand works

The orange arrow hand completes one revolution every 24 hours. It points to the fixed bezel’s 24-hour scale rather than the 12-hour dial, allowing a second time-zone reading. The independent hour hand can be adjusted without stopping the movement, so local time can be changed while the 24-hour hand remains set to home time. The date changes instantaneously, and the seconds can be stopped for precise setting.

Because the bezel is fixed, the 226570 is not operated like a conventional rotating-bezel GMT watch. The bezel is a permanent reference; the independently adjustable hour hand supplies the local-time adjustment.

What changed in the case and bracelet?

The diameter did not shrink: the 226570 is still 42 mm. Launch coverage from 2021 reported narrower lugs and a wider Oyster bracelet, changes that alter the visual balance and how the watch sits on the wrist without changing its headline measurement.

Fit implications

  • Wrist presence: At 42 mm, the Explorer II remains a substantial sports watch. Lug reach, wrist circumference and wrist shape matter more than diameter alone.
  • Proportion: Narrower lugs make the case appear less broad at the ends, while the wider bracelet gives the watch a more planted appearance.
  • Comfort: The revised relationship between case and bracelet may feel more balanced, but it does not turn the 226570 into a small watch.

If you are deciding between generations, try both on. If you want a genuinely smaller Explorer II, neither the 226570 nor the 216570 solves that requirement because both use a 42 mm case.

Black or white (Polar) dial?

Black dial

The black dial creates the strongest contrast with the white-filled indices and orange 24-hour hand. It has a quieter, more conventional appearance and can make the orange hand feel especially prominent against the dark background.

White Polar dial

The white dial is brighter and more distinctive. Its black surrounds and orange 24-hour hand produce a graphic, high-contrast layout that many buyers choose for visual character rather than a different function. Neither dial changes the movement, water resistance, case size or GMT operation.

Which is better?

Choose the black dial if you prefer a restrained look and the most visually obvious orange hand. Choose the Polar if legibility at a glance and a more unusual presence are your priorities. This is a preference decision, not a specification advantage.

Legibility, lume and everyday functions

The Explorer II’s broad hour and minute hands, large markers and orange 24-hour hand separate the two time displays clearly. Rolex’s Chromalight display is intended to keep the primary indications visible in darkness. The date at 3 o’clock is magnified by the Cyclops lens, while the sapphire crystal supplies scratch resistance typical of the model’s professional-sports positioning.

Is the 226570 worth it?

For a new buyer, the 226570 is the more practical Explorer II because the approximately 70-hour reserve reduces the inconvenience of stopping between wears, and the case-and-bracelet refinements improve proportions without abandoning the 42 mm identity. The decision is less compelling if you already own a healthy 216570 and do not value the longer reserve or revised fit.

The 216570 can still make sense when its purchase price, condition, service documentation or dial preference is materially better. Compare the complete cost—including any immediate service need—not just the watch head. A well-documented example with known provenance may be preferable to a cheaper watch with uncertain history.

Official price and buying checks

Rolex’s Belgium product page displayed €10,450 for the listed 226570 reference in 2026. That is a Belgium-market figure captured in 2026; Rolex pricing varies by country and can change, so confirm the current regional price with Rolex or an authorized retailer.

Before buying from the secondary market

  • Verify the exact reference, dial and bracelet configuration.
  • Check the seller’s history, authentication process and written return terms.
  • Request photographs of the watch, clasp, serial documentation and warranty materials, while protecting sensitive serial information in public listings.
  • Confirm whether service records are from Rolex or an identifiable qualified provider, and budget for inspection if provenance is incomplete.
  • Ensure the bracelet fits your wrist and that replacement links, if needed, are available through an appropriate channel.

For storage or travel, a case or roll specified for a 42 mm watch may fit, but internal dimensions and crown clearance should be confirmed before purchase.

Bottom line

The Rolex Explorer II 226570 is not a radical redesign. Its case still measures 42 mm, its bezel remains fixed and its orange 24-hour hand still defines the watch. The substantial improvement is the move to calibre 3285 and its approximately 70-hour reserve, supported by subtle lug and bracelet revisions. That makes the 226570 the stronger all-round choice for buyers who want the current model, while the 216570 remains a rational alternative when condition, price or personal preference outweighs the newer movement.
