Behind the Scenes at Sellita: How the Swiss Movement Supplier Became a Mechanical-Watch Powerhouse

Sellita supplies the standardized Swiss mechanical movements that make many independent-brand watches possible. Here is how the company grew, what the SW200-1 offers, how SW200-2 Power+ differs and what buyers should check.

Sellita is the largely invisible manufacturer behind a substantial number of Swiss mechanical watches. Founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1950 as an assembly workshop, it became an independent movement maker after ETA changed how it supplied components in the early 2000s. Its standardized calibres now let small and medium-sized brands offer mechanical watches without financing a proprietary movement from scratch.

What is a Sellita movement?

A Sellita movement is a Swiss-made mechanical calibre produced by Sellita Watch Co. SA and supplied to watch brands for use in their own cases and designs. Sellita serves competing brands confidentially; its name often appears only in technical specifications or on a movement visible through a display back.

The company says it controls the essential stages of design, manufacture and assembly. Its operations include movement blanks at Gurofa, electroplating and decoration through Technicor, engineering departments, two laboratories (one for chemical analysis and material control), and expertise in designing and manufacturing the regulating organ.

A 2025 interview with owner Miguel Garcia described production of plates, bridges, wheels, pinions, levers, escapements, hairsprings and micro-ball bearings. Movements are hand assembled, regulated and tested at Sellita. The interview reported more than 16,000 square metres of production space, 11 calibre families, about 500 Sellita employees and approximately 800 employees across the group.

How Sellita became an independent manufacturer

From assembly work to its own calibre

For decades Sellita assembled movements from supplied parts, including work connected with ETA. That model became vulnerable when ETA moved in the early 2000s to reduce the supply of loose parts and ébauches to outside companies.

Sellita’s response was to develop a movement using the established Swiss automatic “workhorse” format. The first SW200 appeared around 2004–05. A 2018 factory report said Sellita had delivered more than 10 million mechanical movements by that time, and that 98% of its parts were then made in Switzerland through a network of more than 100 Swiss suppliers. Those figures describe the period covered by that report, not a current production audit.

The 2003 ownership change

The 2025 company interview dates Sellita’s strategic push for independence to Miguel Garcia’s acquisition of the business in 2003. It estimated that roughly 1.5 million mechanical movements now leave the campus each year. That is an interview estimate rather than a published audited result.

Garcia summarized the company’s assembly philosophy as “Montage ist bei uns Menschensache” (“Assembly is a matter for people”), highlighting the continuing role of hand assembly, regulation and testing even in a highly industrial operation.

Why the SW200 became so important

The SW200 matters because it gave brands a widely understood alternative to the ETA 2824-2 format. A standardized automatic calibre can preserve existing case dimensions, dial openings, hand sizes and stem arrangements, reducing the cost and engineering risk of launching a mechanical watch.

Sellita’s catalogue contains several SW200-1 variants, so the exact reference matters. The listed SW200-1 specification is:

Specification SW200-1 catalogue figure
Winding Self-winding automatic, with ball-bearing rotor
Functions Three hands; catalogue variants may add a date display
Frequency 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz)
Jewels 26
Power reserve Typically 41 hours, depending on the listed variant
Stopping function Stop-second (hacking) device

“Typical” is important: a watch specification should identify the precise SW200-1 version rather than treating every movement in the family as identical.

SW200-1 versus SW200-2 Power+

Sellita describes the SW200-2 Power+ as a major evolution of the SW200-1. Its official announcement says the movement was completely re-engineered to deliver a 65-hour power reserve. That is substantially longer than the approximately 41-hour figure published for listed SW200-1 variants, but it does not make every SW200-2 automatically identical in finishing, regulation or complications: those details remain dependent on the supplied version and the customer brand’s specification.

Is Sellita as good as ETA?

There is no single answer because “good” can refer to architecture, accuracy, decoration, serviceability or price. Sellita and ETA movements are industrial products supplied in different grades and configurations; the movement name alone does not tell you how a finished watch will perform or look.

Comparison axis What to check
Architecture and compatibility Whether the calibre fits the case, hand set, dial opening and stem position. A nominally similar movement is not automatically a drop-in replacement.
Functions Three hands, date, GMT, chronograph, power-reserve indication and other complications are reference-specific.
Power reserve and frequency Use the published figure for the exact calibre, not a family-wide assumption.
Regulation and grade Brands may order base, upgraded, decorated, specially regulated or chronometer-grade versions.
Service ecosystem Consider parts availability, local watchmaker familiarity, training and the brand’s own service policy.
Cost and supply Standardized supply generally costs less and carries less development risk than a proprietary calibre.

Two watches carrying movements from the same supplier can therefore differ noticeably. Decoration, rotor engraving, regulation, shock protection, tolerances and quality-control requirements are selected in the supply contract and by the brand. “Swiss Made” identifies the watch’s regulated manufacturing origin under Swiss rules; it is not a promise that every customer receives the same finishing or adjustment.

How Sellita compares with Miyota and Seiko Instruments

Miyota and Seiko Instruments are also major movement suppliers, while ETA remains an important reference point for Swiss-compatible designs. The useful comparison is not national reputation but technical fit and support.

  • Architecture: confirm dimensions, hand heights, dial clearance, calendar position and stem height before assuming interchangeability.
  • Functions: compare the exact complication and calendar system; a three-hand automatic is not equivalent to a GMT or chronograph calibre.
  • Reserve and frequency: compare published numbers for the specific references.
  • Regulation: ask whether the brand receives a standard, adjusted, decorated or chronometer-grade movement.
  • Service: check whether independent watchmakers can obtain parts and have experience with that family.
  • Economics: a supplier movement lets a brand amortize tooling and engineering across many customers instead of funding every component itself.

Why brands choose a supplier movement

Lower development risk

Designing a proprietary mechanical calibre requires years of engineering, tooling, testing, quality systems, inventory and after-sales support. A standardized Sellita calibre shifts much of that investment to a specialist supplier.

More accessible Swiss mechanical watches

Because the movement is shared across many projects, a small or medium-sized brand can spend its budget on case design, dial work, complications, regulation and finishing rather than recreating the entire engine. Mario Peserico, general manager of Eberhard & Co., called Sellita “vital” to small and especially medium-sized brands such as his own.

A discreet industrial relationship

Sellita’s official positioning emphasizes that it serves all brands and treats clients equally while maintaining confidentiality because customers may compete with one another. That is why the manufacturer can be central to a watch’s operation without appearing on the dial or in advertising.

What watches use the Sellita SW200-1?

Many brands have used SW200-family movements, but the movement is often not named prominently in retail copy and a brand can change suppliers or grades between references. Identify the exact watch reference, production period and movement designation in the brand’s technical sheet, case-back engraving or service documentation.

Eberhard & Co. is a documented customer example in the 2025 interview, but that does not mean every Eberhard model uses the SW200-1. A watch listing that says only “Swiss automatic” is not enough to establish the calibre.

How long is the SW200-1 power reserve?

Sellita’s 2022–2023 catalogue lists a typical 41-hour power reserve for SW200-1 variants. The actual running time depends on the exact version, winding state and condition of the movement. The newer SW200-2 Power+ is announced with a 65-hour reserve after a complete re-engineering, so the two figures should not be conflated.

Can a Sellita movement be serviced or replaced?

Servicing

Yes. The SW200 family uses a conventional architecture familiar to many Swiss-trained watchmakers. A proper service still requires the correct reference, parts, lubrication specifications, timing equipment and water-resistance testing for the complete watch. Service intervals should follow the watch brand’s recommendation and the movement’s observed condition rather than an arbitrary universal deadline.

Replacement

A replacement is possible in principle but is not automatically plug-and-play. The replacement must match the case, hands, dial, calendar opening, stem length, movement holder and any complication module. A watchmaker should verify compatibility before ordering; substituting a superficially similar calibre can create alignment, clearance or date-change problems.

What Sellita’s scale means for mechanical watches

Sellita’s importance is both technical and economic. Its reported 11 calibre families and large production campus allow brands to buy a tested platform while choosing their own case, dial, decoration and regulation. That arrangement explains how mechanical watches can remain available from companies that could not justify a fully in-house movement program.

The practical lesson for a buyer is simple: evaluate the complete watch, not just the supplier logo. Confirm the exact calibre, published reserve and frequency, the grade and regulation promised by the brand, the finishing visible through the back, and the service arrangements available in your region.
