Choose by the display you need, the space available in the case, the manufacturer-listed specifications, and—above all—verified compatibility with the watch’s dial, hands, stem, and case. The 8215 is a useful standard date-movement baseline; the thinner 9015 and 9039 suit different slim-watch designs, while the 9075 adds an independently adjustable local hour hand for a GMT display.
How to choose a Miyota automatic movement
Start with the watch design, not a ranking. A day/date display, open-heart dial, small seconds, or GMT hand requires the corresponding movement and compatible dial and hands. Then compare movement height and the published figures that matter to you. For a repair or build, fit is a gate: headline specifications cannot establish that a movement will drop into a particular watch.
- Required display: date, day/date, 24-hour subdisplay, open-heart, small seconds, or GMT.
- Available space: compare movement height with the case and the full assembly requirements.
- Listed performance specifications: compare Miyota’s stated accuracy range, running time, frequency, and jewel count where published.
- Verified compatibility: check the specific case, dial, hand, stem, and relevant components against manufacturer drawings and the watch specification.
Miyota’s product pages provide specifications and feature descriptions, not controlled head-to-head tests. Accuracy figures below are listed ranges, and running-time figures are manufacturer-stated; they do not establish how an individual watch will perform in use.

Which caliber fits which design?
8215: a standard automatic with date
The 8215 is a straightforward comparison point when a watch needs a date and does not require a thinner premium movement or a specialized display. Miyota lists automatic and hand winding, quick date setting, stop-seconds, a 5.67 mm height, 21 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, approximately 42 hours of running time, and an accuracy range of -20 to +40 seconds per day. Its product page calls it the company’s “signature standard mechanical movement”; that is Miyota’s description, not an independent rating. See the 8215 specifications.
8205, 8217, and 82S0: choose for the display
Within the standard family, match the model to the dial layout: the 8205 provides day and date, the 8217 adds a 24-hour display, and the 82S0 is a three-hand open-heart option. Miyota’s movement index lists each at 5.67 mm high with an accuracy range of -20 to +40 seconds per day. Other specifications for these models are not included in that index; use the applicable product documentation rather than assuming they match the 8215 in every detail. The index also lists 82S5 and 82S7 for small-second and related open-heart/display configurations. Check the exact hand and dial arrangement before selecting one. See Miyota’s movement index.

9015: thin case with a date
The 9015 is the relevant premium option in this comparison when a slim movement and date display are both required. Miyota lists it at 3.90 mm high, with an accuracy range of -10 to +30 seconds per day, approximately 42 hours of running time, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and 24 jewels. Its listed functions include automatic and hand winding, quick date setting, and stop-seconds. Miyota describes it as its “signature ultra-thin premium mechanical movement”; this is manufacturer language, not an independent performance assessment. See the 9015 specifications.
9039: thin three-hand design without a date
The 9039 shares the 9015’s listed height, accuracy range, approximate running time, frequency, and jewel count, but its listed function is three hands without a date. That makes the display requirement—not a presumed performance advantage—the key distinction between these two calibers. See the 9039 specifications.

9075: GMT with an independently adjustable local hour
The 9075 is designed for a GMT display. It has a central GMT hand and an individually adjustable hour hand, so the independently adjusted hand is the local hour hand—not the GMT hand. Miyota lists a 4.92 mm height, -10 to +30 seconds per day accuracy range, approximately 42 hours of running time, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and 24 jewels. The manufacturer calls it a “Mechanical movement equipped with True GMT function.” See the 9075 specifications.
8315: a discontinued long-reserve option
Miyota’s 2024 English catalog lists the 8315 with a 60-hour power reserve, 5.67 mm height, 21 jewels, and 21,600 vibrations per hour. However, Miyota’s current 8315 product page says the product is discontinued. The 2024 catalog says its watch-case construction is compatible with the 8215, 8205, 82S0, 82S5, and 82S7. That case-construction note is not a guarantee that all parts interchange.

Check fit before buying or servicing
A caliber name or matching height alone is not enough to confirm a replacement. Miyota provides drawings, instruction manuals, parts lists, and exploded views through its product documentation and parts resources. Compare the documentation with the exact watch and the parts being used.
- Identify the required caliber and display. Confirm the existing movement reference if repairing, or select the required date, day/date, subdisplay, open-heart, or GMT layout if building.
- Compare dimensional drawings. Verify the case and movement dimensions, including height; do not infer full compatibility from a single matching measurement.
- Check dial and hands. Confirm the dial attachment and layout and the hand specifications for the exact movement and watch.
- Verify stem and other components. Use the relevant parts list and watch specification to check the stem and any components that must carry over.
- Confirm the source and current status. A manufacturer drawing helps establish dimensions and parts, but it does not authenticate a third-party listing or prove that the listed movement suits your watch.
Miyota’s 8215 page posts a minimum order of 1,000 pieces per model and a production lead time of two months or more. Those are manufacturer order notes, not a statement about consumer marketplace stock; check the live page and supplier for current availability and timing.
