The Rolex Oyster turns 100 in 2026, marking a century since Rolex introduced its sealed Oyster case in 1926. The original Oyster was a case, not the modern Oyster Perpetual: its screw-down construction helped protect a watch from water, and later developments—including the self-winding rotor—built on that practical idea.
What the Rolex Oyster is—and why it turns 100 in 2026
“Oyster” first named Rolex’s water-resistant case, introduced in 1926. It later became associated with a wristwatch and, in the Oyster Perpetual, a family of watches combining the Oyster case with a self-winding movement. The anniversary is therefore the centenary of the case, not a claim that every feature of today’s Oyster Perpetual was present in the first Oyster.

The company’s historical account says the name came from the oyster shell: “The fact that, like an oyster, it can remain an unlimited time under water without detriment to its parts, gave me the idea of christening it the ‘Rolex Oyster’, the name under which it has become famous throughout the world.” Rolex attributes those words to founder Hans Wilsdorf. How the 1926 case addressed a practical problem
From the 1922 Submarine to the Oyster
Rolex’s earlier 1922 Submarine was an attempt to protect a watch from water, but its outer case had to be opened to reach the crown. In Rolex’s account, the 1926 Oyster’s screw-down bezel, case back and winding crown made a sealed watch more practical to operate. The key idea was not simply to enclose the movement; it was to make the protective case usable without routinely opening it to wind the watch. Rolex’s 1920s history

Why the Gleitze swim mattered
In 1927, British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore an Oyster during a Channel swim that Rolex says lasted more than 10 hours. The brand’s historical account says the watch emerged unscathed. This is Rolex’s account of a public demonstration, not a modern controlled test or independent assessment. Its significance is that it gave buyers a memorable way to understand the waterproofness claim at a time when wristwatches were still establishing themselves as practical timekeepers.
Rolex also reproduces Gleitze’s endorsement: “The reason I wear a Rolex Oyster wristwatch when swimming is because it is the only watch I know that is absolutely waterproof and also immune to damage from sand or salt air.” That statement is historical testimony as quoted by Rolex, not a guarantee for present-day or vintage watches. The sealed case was only one part of the story. Rolex dates its Perpetual rotor—a self-winding system powered by the movement of the wearer’s wrist—to 1931. The Oyster Perpetual joined that self-winding autonomy to the Oyster case. The distinction matters: the 1926 case did not already contain the rotor later associated with the name. Rolex on the Perpetual rotor
That sequence is the Oyster’s long game: a practical case became a platform to which Rolex added further watchmaking developments. In 2026, Rolex says its Superlative Chronometer criteria encompass precision, waterproofness, self-winding and autonomy, as well as resistance to magnetism, reliability and durability. This describes Rolex’s own certification criteria; it is not an external standards-body judgment. Rolex Oyster Story and current collection

Rolex’s 2026 Oyster Perpetual collection includes a special yellow Rolesor anniversary version in 31 mm, 36 mm and 41 mm sizes. Its crown carries a “100” detail, while “100 years” appears at 6 o’clock in place of “Swiss Made.” Rolex identifies the 41 mm Oyster Perpetual as an Oystersteel model; that material detail should not be assumed for every size or configuration. The centenary design is a present-day tribute, not a re-creation of the original 1926 watch. It connects the anniversary to the original case while placing it within the contemporary Oyster Perpetual collection.

How today’s specifications differ from the original
Rolex currently lists Oyster Perpetual case sizes from 28 mm to 41 mm, water resistance to 100 metres, and a −2/+2 seconds-per-day tolerance for the finished Superlative Chronometer. These are current Rolex-published specifications for the present collection; they are not specifications for every vintage Oyster or a guarantee of the condition of an older watch. Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection
For a vintage Oyster, the original waterproofness story cannot establish its present water resistance. Age, condition and service history matter, and the current collection rating should not be applied to an older watch without evidence specific to that watch.
What Rolex says about long-term ownership
Rolex says its watches come with a five-year guarantee and recommends servicing every ten years. Those are the brand’s current general statements, not a universal service schedule for every vintage Oyster or every individual use and condition. Rolex service information
