Best Pulsometer Watches: How to Choose a Heart-Rate Watch

The best heart-rate watch depends on your activities, phone and priorities. Compare wrist tracking with chest straps, understand accuracy evidence, and check ECG availability before you buy.

The best pulsometer watch depends on what you need it to do: everyday heart-rate tracking, workout feedback, or a broader set of smartwatch and training features. Here, “pulsometer watch” means a smartwatch or sports watch with wrist-based heart-rate tracking. No single model is established as the most accurate for everyone; compare phone compatibility, fit, intended activities, features and battery expectations, and consider a chest strap if responsive workout readings matter more than convenience.

What a pulsometer watch measures

Most watches marketed with heart-rate tracking use optical sensors: light shines into the skin and photodiodes detect changes associated with blood-volume pulses. Apple describes the infrared and green LEDs and light-sensitive photodiodes used in its system in its technical paper on Apple Watch heart-rate measurement. The displayed number is an estimate, and its usefulness depends on the activity, the fit and the wearer.

A watch’s ECG feature is different. It records electrical signals through an electrical heart sensor; it is not simply a more precise version of the optical heart-rate display, nor a comprehensive medical diagnosis. Availability depends on the model and region.

How to choose the right heart-rate watch

  • Check phone compatibility. Companion health apps, setup and some features such as ECG can depend on the phone, operating system, model and country.
  • Start with your main activity. Running, cycling, gym sessions, swimming and all-day wear place different demands on a sensor. A watch that suits your routine is more useful than one selected from a single accuracy claim.
  • Decide whether convenience or workout responsiveness matters more. Wrist tracking is convenient for everyday wear. A compatible electrode chest strap may suit demanding workouts where responsive heart-rate data is a priority.
  • Consider fit and comfort. Placement affects readings, and a watch you are comfortable wearing is more practical for regular tracking.
  • Balance training and smartwatch features against charging needs. GPS, display use, notifications, music and training tools can influence the features you want and how often you are willing to charge.

What accuracy evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Published results vary with device type and activity, so category averages should not be treated as a promise about a particular model or wearer. Which? says it lab-tested 58 devices against chest straps and reported these 2026 mean error rates by category:

Fitness tracker 2.3% 6.6% 9.2% 1.5%
Smart ring 20.2% 9.6% 5.6% 2%

These are Which?’s category averages from its 2026 testing, not guarantees for any named watch. Which? also notes that category sample sizes differ, with fewer rings than smartwatches. Read its testing and guidance on smartwatch heart-rate accuracy for its method and further context.

A 2017 study by University of Wisconsin–La Crosse researchers compared wrist devices, a forearm device and a Polar H7 chest strap with ECG in 50 healthy adults during treadmill, stationary-bike and elliptical exercise. Results varied by exercise type; the H7 had the strongest agreement with ECG among the devices tested (concordance correlation coefficient rc = 0.996). The authors concluded that electrode-containing chest monitors should be used when accurate measurement is imperative. Because the tested devices are older, this study is not a ranking of watches sold today. See the study record on PubMed.

A separate, specific clinical study summarized by the American College of Cardiology involved 81 participants, 25% of whom had atrial fibrillation. For the older devices in that treadmill study, mean absolute differences from ECG were 4.6 bpm at rest in participants in sinus rhythm and 7.0 bpm at rest in participants with atrial fibrillation; at peak exercise, the respective differences were 13.8 bpm and 28.7 bpm. Those figures describe that cohort and those devices, not the expected performance of a current watch. The ACC summary provides further study details.

Watch and sensor options to consider

Apple Watch Series 12

Apple announced Series 12 in September 2026 with optical and electrical heart sensors. It is a current mainstream smartwatch example, not an independent finding that it is best for every wearer. Check Apple’s Series 12 announcement for the model’s announced features and verify phone, software and regional requirements before choosing it.

Garmin Fenix 8 and other Garmin sports watches

Wareable describes the Fenix 8 as a premium, training-focused option and notes that other Garmin models may offer a better mix of affordability and features for many people. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal ranking. Its heart-rate monitor and watch guide discusses its comparisons and test approach, including testing against another watch and a chest strap.

Polar Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro

Polar lists the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro as compatible with its Wrist-ECG feature, which the manufacturer describes as a resting ECG measurement. Check Polar’s Wrist-ECG information and assess whether that feature fits your actual training and health needs.

A compatible chest strap as a workout companion

A strap with contact electrodes measures electrical signals rather than estimating pulse optically at the wrist. Garmin explains the difference between the sensor types in its heart-rate sensor FAQ. The Polar H10 is one current strap discussed by Wareable, but the 2017 study’s reported results were for the Polar H7, not the H10. A strap supplements a compatible watch; it does not replace smartwatch functions. See Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison report for an example of a reviewer using an H10 as a reference while testing newer watches.

How to improve wrist heart-rate readings

  1. Wear the watch snugly above the wrist bone. Which? advises positioning it about two finger-widths above the bone; tighten it for a run. It should be secure without being uncomfortable.
  2. Give the sensor a clear surface. Clean sweat, sunscreen or dust from the sensor, and warm up in cold conditions before expecting a stable reading.
  3. Select the closest activity profile. Garmin recommends choosing the activity profile that best matches the workout and allowing warm-up time for the sensor to lock onto heart rate. See Garmin’s optical heart-rate guidance.
  4. Treat these as practical steps, not guarantees. Better fit and setup may help, but they cannot ensure an accurate reading in every activity or for every person.

What an ECG watch feature means

Some watches add a user-initiated ECG recording using an electrical sensor. Apple says its ECG app can record heartbeat and rhythm on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and all Ultra models, then check the recording for atrial fibrillation; its support documentation says the feature is not available on SE models and availability varies by region. The recording is single-lead-type, and the feature does not diagnose every heart condition. Review Apple’s ECG availability and requirements and ECG app explanation for applicable model and regional details. Do not use an ECG or heart-rate reading as a substitute for medical advice or diagnosis.
