Buying Guide: 6 Tantalizing Jumping-Hour Watches

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A jumping-hour watch replaces a continuously moving hour hand with a numeral that changes instantaneously at the top of each hour. The format can be an easy-to-read aperture, a pair of hour and minute windows, or a kinetic satellite display. This guide compares six notable examples, from the relatively conventional MeisterSinger Salthora to highly complicated Harry Winston and URWERK creations, so you can match the mechanism to your wrist, budget and collecting priorities.

What a jumping-hour watch actually does

In a conventional mechanical watch, the hour hand travels gradually around the dial. In a jumping-hour design, the movement stores and releases energy so the hour numeral advances in one discrete jump every 60 minutes. Because the display is mechanical rather than electronic, the watch is often described as a mechanical digital watch.

Not every unusual digital-looking watch uses the same architecture. A single aperture can show the hour while a hand indicates minutes; dual apertures can show hours and minutes as numerals; and satellite or wandering-hour systems carry numerals around the dial before presenting the current hour. The latter displays are related in spirit but should not be confused with a simple jumping-hour disc.

Choose the display before the brand

Single jumping-hour aperture

This is the most immediately legible arrangement. The hour appears in one window, while minutes and seconds remain on conventional hands or sub-dials. It is the most practical format for daily checking because the information is presented in a familiar hierarchy.

  • Standard Band Width: 20mm to 18mm band width allows for easy strap replacement and customization options

Dual apertures

Separate windows for hours and minutes create a stronger digital character. They can be strikingly clean, but the dial may provide less visual information than a traditional handset when you want to estimate time at a glance.

Satellite or wandering-hour display

Rotating carriers or satellites move numerals across the dial, usually paired with a scale and a retrograde or linear minute indication. This is an architectural complication intended as much for visual theater and collecting as for compact everyday readability.

The six watches

1. MeisterSinger Salthora — the conventional, comparatively approachable choice

MeisterSinger introduced the Salthora jumping-hour collection in 2014. Its design keeps the complication approachable: a jumping hour is combined with off-centre minutes and running seconds in a recognizable wristwatch layout. The dated specification below lists a stainless-steel case, sapphire crystals front and back, an automatic MS_JH-01 calibre running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 47-hour reserve. A cited price of EUR 6,990 belongs to that specification and is not a guarantee of today’s price or stock.

Choose the Salthora if you want to wear a jumping hour regularly without moving into a large tourbillon or a highly exotic satellite display. Confirm the exact reference, dial and current dealer offer before paying.

2. Audemars Piguet Neo Frame Jumping Hour — the design-led modern option

Audemars Piguet’s Neo Frame uses dual apertures in a two-tone pink-gold and sapphire construction with a black sapphire dial. The brand describes Calibre 7122 as its first self-winding jumping-hour movement and says the hour numerals “leap every 60 minutes.” Its Art Deco influence makes the watch a deliberate design object rather than a discreet complication.

The Neo Frame is the logical choice when case and dial architecture matter as much as the time display. The cited product information establishes a 52-hour reserve for Calibre 7122, but does not establish a current price, production quantity, case dimensions or water-resistance rating. Those details must be confirmed for the exact watch offered by an Audemars Piguet boutique or authorized retailer.

3. Harry Winston Ocean Tourbillon Jumping Hour — high jewelry and high complication

Harry Winston’s Ocean Tourbillon Jumping Hour combines jumping hours and minutes with a tourbillon and a power-reserve indicator. Its openworked black sapphire dial exposes the HW4401 manual movement, and the watch is supplied on a black alligator strap. Harry Winston calls the design a visual interpretation of classic Modernist architecture.

Only 75 pieces are listed, making provenance, condition and servicing history central to the purchase. The large precious-metal case and tourbillon increase mechanical and service complexity; this is a specialist collector’s watch, not the low-maintenance everyday option. The listed 5-bar rating should be treated as a specification to verify with the brand, not as a reason to assume sports-watch use.

4. URWERK Opus 5 — the kinetic satellite interpretation

URWERK’s Opus 5 was unveiled in 2005 in partnership with Harry Winston. It is not a conventional aperture jump hour: a satellite display carries the hour while a retrograde minute hand completes the reading. That distinction matters if you specifically want a numeral that flips in a fixed window rather than a wandering-hour mechanism.

With its very large case, manual HW1026 calibre and five-day-plus reserve, Opus 5 prioritizes kinetic architecture and collector interest. The official specification gives a 122-hour power reserve and a 3 ATM pressure test. Production quantity is not stated, so ask a specialist seller for serial-number documentation, service records and the exact configuration.

5. Cartier Tank à Guichet — the rectangular historical reference

Cartier reintroduced a limited-edition Tank à Guichet jumping-hour watch in 1996, following the original 1928 design. Its rectangular case and restrained apertures make it an important historical counterpoint to the sculptural modern pieces in this list.

The available historical record does not identify a single current reference, movement specification, dimensions, water-resistance rating or live price. Treat any listing as a model-identification exercise: obtain the reference number, movement details, service documentation and evidence of originality from Cartier or a reputable vintage specialist before assessing value.

6. Audemars Piguet archival jumping-hour lineage — a model-specific research slot

Audemars Piguet’s current Neo Frame material connects the watch to the company’s pioneering jumping-hour development in the 1920s and describes the complication as having roots dating to 1650. That makes the archival lineage useful for buyers who want an historically important AP jumping-hour watch, but it is not one specific, currently catalogued reference.

Do not assume that every vintage AP jumping-hour listing shares the Neo Frame’s movement, case or display. Select an exact archival model, then verify its reference, originality, serviceability, production status and market price with an AP archive, boutique or established specialist.

How practical are jumping-hour watches?

Readability

A single aperture such as the Salthora’s is easiest to live with because minutes and seconds retain conventional hands. Dual apertures are still straightforward once you learn the layout. Satellite systems demand more attention because the hour must be read against a track while the minute indication moves independently.

Size and comfort

Case geometry is a major dividing line. The Salthora specification is close to conventional dress-watch territory, while the Ocean Tourbillon and especially Opus 5 occupy substantially more wrist space. Measure your wrist and check lug reach, not just diameter, before buying a large or highly architectural case.

Winding and ownership

Automatic winding is convenient when a watch is worn frequently. Manual watches require a winding routine, but long reserves can reduce how often that routine is needed. Tourbillons, openworked displays and limited production generally mean fewer qualified service options and higher potential servicing costs than a conventional automatic jumping-hour watch.

Water and daily use

Use the stated water-resistance or pressure-test rating as a boundary, not an invitation to treat an unusual complication like a dive watch. Have seals checked by a qualified service center, keep leather straps away from prolonged water exposure, and ask the manufacturer how the rating applies to the exact reference.

A buying checklist

  1. Identify the architecture. Decide whether you want a fixed aperture, dual apertures or a wandering-hour satellite display.
  2. Confirm the exact reference. This is essential for Cartier and archival Audemars Piguet pieces, where similarly named watches can have different movements and dimensions.
  3. Check the movement and reserve. Establish whether the watch is automatic or manual and whether the stated reserve meets your wearing pattern.
  4. Assess the case on your wrist. Compare diameter, thickness and lug reach, especially for the Harry Winston and URWERK designs.
  5. Verify condition and service support. Request movement photographs, service invoices, serial documentation and the seller’s return terms for rare or complicated watches.
  6. Recheck price and availability immediately before purchase. The cited Salthora price is dated, and no live price or inventory is established for the other entries. Use the brand, an authorized retailer or a reputable specialist rather than relying on an old listing.

Which jumping-hour watch fits which buyer?

  • Best everyday starting point: MeisterSinger Salthora, for its conventional wristwatch layout and automatic winding.
  • Best modern design statement: Audemars Piguet Neo Frame, for its sapphire-and-pink-gold construction and dual apertures.
  • Best high-complication jewel: Harry Winston Ocean Tourbillon, for its tourbillon, openworked dial and 75-piece rarity.
  • Best kinetic collector piece: URWERK Opus 5, if a satellite display is more appealing than a simple jumping disc.
  • Best historical shape: Cartier Tank à Guichet, provided the exact vintage or reissue reference is authenticated.
  • Best archival hunt: An individually verified Audemars Piguet historical reference, selected only after its model-specific facts are established.
