The best 1950s Breitling depends on what you want from a vintage watch: choose the Navitimer for flight calculations, the AVI/Co-Pilot for legibility, the Chronomat for an earlier slide-rule design, the Premier for dressier chronograph styling, or the SuperOcean for a diver. These are not interchangeable choices, and a model name alone cannot establish whether a particular watch is correct, original, or in sound condition.
Which 1950s Breitling is right for you?
| Model and references | Best suited to | What distinguishes it | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navitimer, ref. 806 | Aviation history and flight calculations | A rotating slide-rule bezel. Breitling dates the design to 1952, AOPA adoption to two years later, and the public version to late 1955. The 806 designation was assigned retroactively. | Dial and logo execution, movement, case condition, and originality. |
| Chronomat, refs. 769/808 | The earlier Breitling slide-rule chronograph tradition | The Chronomat preceded the Navitimer. Fratello describes the late-1950s ref. 808 as an update of ref. 769, with pump pushers, baton hands and markers, and a Venus 175 movement. | Reference and specific execution; designs varied. |
| AVI/Co-Pilot, ref. 765 | A legible, pilot-oriented chronograph | Breitling dates the Co-Pilot to 1953. Collector coverage describes a 41 mm case, 12-hour bezel, and unusual 15-minute counter. | Dial version and counter configuration. |
| Premier, refs. 765/788 | A dressier chronograph | Fratello describes ref. 765 at 38 mm with a Venus 178, and ref. 788 at 36 mm with a Venus 152. | Case size, movement, metal, dial, and whether the configuration is original. |
| SuperOcean, refs. 1004/807 | Diver styling and water-oriented design | Breitling dates the range to 1957; ref. 807 is a dive chronograph, while ref. 1004 is a time-only model described by Fratello with a distinctive concave bezel. At launch, Breitling stated a 200 m (660 ft) water-resistance specification for time-only and chronograph versions. | Reference, bezel and overall originality. The launch specification says nothing about a surviving watch’s present-day water resistance. |
The chronology and stated purposes for the Navitimer, AVI/Co-Pilot, and SuperOcean come from Breitling’s model history. Navitimer development and release details are in Breitling’s Navitimer history. The reference-level Chronomat, Premier, and SuperOcean descriptions above are reported by Fratello’s vintage Breitling guide.
What the Navitimer’s dates and logo tell you
Breitling’s account separates the Navitimer’s design, association use, and public release: Willy Breitling was approached in 1952 to create a chronograph for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA); the association adopted its version two years later; and the public version appeared in late 1955. According to Breitling, the original AOPA version had no Breitling dial branding and was distributed to association members. The later public version carried the Breitling name and a stylized winged logo. The ref. 806 number was assigned retroactively, so it should not be treated as proof that every early example carried that designation at the time.
Those details help frame what to investigate, but they do not authenticate an individual watch. A logo or a reference number is only one part of a configuration that also includes the dial, movement, case, and other components.

How to assess a 1950s Breitling before buying
-
Match the watch to its intended use
Decide whether you want a flight-calculation bezel, a legibility-focused pilot chronograph, a slide-rule chronograph, a dressier chronograph, or a diver. This narrows the comparison to watches that serve a similar purpose rather than treating every 1950s Breitling as a direct substitute.
-
Verify the reference and movement
Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case, caseback, and movement, then compare the exact configuration with reliable reference literature and a specialist’s assessment. Fratello reports Venus 175 movements in Chronomat refs. 769/808, a Venus 178 in Premier ref. 765, and a Venus 152 in Premier ref. 788; those details should not be generalized to every year or dial execution.

-
Check dimensions and wearability
Fratello describes the AVI ref. 765 at 41 mm, Premier ref. 765 at 38 mm, and Premier ref. 788 at 36 mm. Vintage proportions can wear differently from modern watches, so try a candidate on if possible and consider the shape and thickness as well as the stated diameter.
-
Ask what is original and what has been replaced
Request a component-by-component account covering the dial, hands, bezel, crown, pushers, caseback, movement, and bracelet or strap. Ask which parts are believed correct to the watch, which are service replacements, and which were added later. Decades of servicing and replacement can affect both desirability and value; Fratello also warns buyers about fakes and watches assembled from mismatched parts.

-
Get condition and service evidence
Ask for service records and a condition report from a watchmaker experienced with vintage chronographs. For a SuperOcean, do not infer present-day water resistance from the 1957 launch specification; have a qualified watchmaker inspect and test the individual watch before exposing it to water.
-
Check the seller and provenance
Review the seller’s history and return terms, compare serial and reference details across the watch and its documentation, and establish whether independent inspection is possible before purchase.

What a Breitling archive extract can—and cannot—establish
Breitling’s Archives information explains that an Extract from the Archives relies on information submitted by the applicant and involves no physical inspection of the watch. It is a historical research aid, not authentication, a warranty, proof of ownership, or a report on current condition. It cannot replace a specialist’s examination of the actual watch.
How to think about vintage Breitling prices
Fratello’s guide includes editorial price estimates published around 2021. They are historical estimates, not current market values or guaranteed transaction prices. No current, independently verified sales statistic is established here, so do not use an old guide figure as a present-day benchmark. For a specific candidate, compare recent sales or listings for the same reference and execution, and account for condition, originality, service evidence, and provenance.
