For most collectors, the Heuer/TAG Heuer 1000 Professional 980.006 is the best all-round buy: it is historically important, genuinely capable as a dive watch and usually less expensive than the rare mechanical chronographs. Choose the first-generation Formula 1 for an affordable, colorful quartz watch; the Silverstone 510.403 for a scarce mechanical statement; the Autavia 11063 for classic Chronomatic design; and the 111.603 Olive Drab when specialist rarity matters more than pristine coating.
The euro figures below are guide estimates published by Fratello Watches in 2021, not current 2026 market averages. Vintage prices change with originality, service condition, provenance and seller credibility.

Why the 1980s changed Heuer and TAG Heuer
Quartz competition reshaped the company before the TAG Heuer name appeared. Jack Heuer sold the business to Piaget/Lemania in 1982, and it was sold again to Techniques d’Avant Garde in 1985. The name officially became TAG Heuer on 1 January 1986. Fratello Watches documents that transition in its 1980s buying guide.
TAG’s strategy after the takeover emphasized affordable quartz sports watches for a broad audience. That explains why the decade contains both experimental mechanical chronographs and highly accessible plastic-and-steel quartz models. TAG Heuer’s own history says that “Models developed in the 1980s became the mainstays of today’s TAG Heuer catalog” (TAG Heuer, Rebirth and Modernity).

TAG Heuer Formula 1: the accessible original
The first Formula 1 line was released in 1986 as the new TAG Heuer’s most approachable sports watch. Its construction paired a stainless-steel inner case with a fiberglass outer layer, creating the bright, lightweight appearance that defined the first generation. Initial sizes were 28 mm and 34 mm, and the cut-to-size interchangeable rubber strap made the watch unusually adaptable for its era.
First-series examples were rated to 200 m water resistance. Quartz chronographs joined the family in 1989, while the colorful first generation continued through 1990. TAG Heuer’s historical account and the contemporary overview from Fratello Watches describe the launch and its role in the post-1985 strategy (TAG Heuer history; Fratello Watches).

What to inspect
- Check that the fiberglass bezel and case surfaces retain their original color rather than later repainting or replacement parts.
- Confirm the correct period strap and buckle when supplied; replacement straps are common and affect collectability.
- Verify that the quartz movement starts, resets and keeps reasonable time. A low purchase price does not remove the cost of battery-leak cleanup or a movement service.
Heuer Silverstone ref. 510.403: the rare mechanical statement
Introduced in 1983, the second-generation Silverstone ref. 510.403 is the mechanical outlier in this group. Its charcoal dial sits in a 40 mm square case measuring 15 mm thick, with 22 mm lugs. Inside is the automatic Lemania 5100, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and providing a stated 48-hour power reserve.

The movement’s central chronograph seconds and day/date-oriented layout are part of the Lemania 5100 identity, so dial, hand and movement originality matter more than a merely polished case. Buy only after confirming that a watchmaker can service the movement and that the square case has not been aggressively refinished.
Heuer Autavia ref. 11063: the final Chronomatic generation
The 1983 11063 family is the last Chronomatic Autavia generation before the TAG takeover. The range included the 11063 T, 11063 MH, 11063 P Diver 100 and a GMT version. Standard models use Calibre 12; the GMT uses Calibre 14. All share a 42 mm case, 15 mm thickness and 21 mm lugs.
Rank #3
Choosing among the 11063 references
- 11063 MH: the more commonly encountered option and the easiest starting point for a conventional Autavia collection.
- 11063 T: a less frequently seen variant that deserves reference-level verification before purchase.
- 11063 P Diver 100: the diver-oriented configuration; inspect bezel and dial details against period examples.
- GMT: the Calibre 14 version, identifiable by its additional time-zone function and distinct movement architecture.
Reference numbers, dial layouts, hands, bezel inserts and movement markings should agree. A seller who cannot provide clear movement and case-back photographs is a poor choice for a vintage Autavia.
Heuer/TAG Heuer 1000 Professional ref. 980.006: the historically important quartz diver
The 980.006 evolved from the 8440 quartz diver. TAG Heuer’s official vintage history records that the 8440 was renamed 980.006 by 1980, production moved from France to Switzerland, and the 844/980.0XX case remained a 42 mm design with rounded lugs and distinctive crown guards (TAG Heuer 1000 Series history).

Later TAG dials moved “1000” and “Professional” to the lower portion of the dial, a useful clue when separating early Heuer-branded watches from later TAG examples. Production continued to 1990.

“That gave me the idea of trying to enter this market with a range of sturdy, Rolex-style diving watches with quartz movements, which would avoid overusing the winding crown as was inevitable with mechanical movements.”

980.006 variants and buying priorities
- Early Heuer examples: valued for their pre-TAG branding and place in the transition period.
- 980.006L: a short-lived variant that is less frequently encountered.
- 980.006N: the easier-to-find TAG Heuer version, often the practical entry point.
Inspect the bezel insert, crown guards, dial printing, hands and case-back engravings together. Water-resistance figures printed on a vintage dial are not proof of present-day sealing; have the case pressure-tested before swimming and replace tired gaskets.

Heuer Autavia ref. 111.603 “Olive Drab”: a specialist PVD choice
Introduced in 1983, the 111.603 uses the 42 mm Autavia case and Calibre 12 architecture but adds an olive PVD finish. The coating is prone to visible wear, especially on bezel edges, lug corners and clasp contact points. That wear is part of the model’s identity but also the main determinant of condition and value.
Do not confuse honest, even wear with an abrasive polish that has removed the original coating. Ask for high-resolution photographs of every coated surface, the case back and the clasp. A bright replacement bezel or mismatched hardware can make an apparently inexpensive example costly to restore.
How to compare an 1980s TAG Heuer before buying
Movement and serviceability
- Quartz models should have a clean battery compartment, functioning setting and reset operations, and evidence that leakage has not damaged the movement.
- Calibre 12, Calibre 14 and Lemania 5100 chronographs require a watchmaker familiar with discontinued parts and period-specific construction.
- A recent service invoice from a reputable specialist is more useful than a seller’s claim that a watch is “running.”
Originality and condition
- Compare dial typography, hand shape, bezel markings, crown, pushers and case-back engraving with documented examples of the exact reference.
- Prefer untouched or sympathetically worn cases to heavily polished examples with softened edges.
- For PVD watches, assess coating loss separately from mechanical condition; a healthy movement does not make a stripped case original.
Size and daily wear
The 28 mm and 34 mm Formula 1 sizes wear compactly, while the 40 mm Silverstone and 42 mm Autavia and 1000 models have a much stronger wrist presence. Measure lug-to-lug fit and strap availability, not just the advertised diameter. A 15 mm-thick chronograph can feel taller than its diameter suggests.
Documentation and seller checks
- Request clear photographs of the dial, movement, inside case back, bezel, crown, pushers and clasp.
- Match the reference, serial or production markings and movement caliber; inconsistencies are reasons to stop, not bargaining opportunities.
- Use a seller with a verifiable return policy and vintage-watch references. Independent authentication is sensible for the Silverstone, Autavia chronographs and Olive Drab, where replacement parts can be expensive.
Which 1980s model should you choose?
- Choose the Formula 1 if you want the lowest-cost route into the decade, bright period design and straightforward quartz ownership.
- Choose the 1000 Professional 980.006 if you want the strongest combination of historical importance, recognizable dive-watch design and usable everyday dimensions.
- Choose the Silverstone 510.403 if mechanical rarity and the Lemania 5100 matter more than low maintenance cost.
- Choose the Autavia 11063 for the most balanced classic Chronomatic chronograph, with the GMT reserved for collectors who specifically want Calibre 14.
- Choose the Olive Drab 111.603 only when you understand PVD wear and can verify that the coating, dial and movement are substantially original.
Whichever reference you select, treat the published euro ranges as historical 2021 guide estimates rather than promises of what a watch is worth today. Condition, originality, service evidence and authentication will determine the price of the individual watch in front of you.
