Bvlgari’s watchmaking story runs from Sotirio Bulgari’s Rome shop in 1884 to a jewelry house that built recognizable watch designs and, by the 2000s, pursued more ambitious horology. Serpenti, Roma, Bvlgari Bvlgari, Diagono and Aluminium mark the changes in style; acquisitions and manufacturing investment signal a deeper technical turn. This first part ends in 2010, before the Octo’s 2012 debut.
From a Rome shop to watches
Brandon Baines’s 2021 Fratello history begins with Sotirios Voulgaris, known as Sotirio Bulgari, and the Rome business he opened in 1884. The company first established itself through silversmithing and jewelry. Its move into watches was not a simple change of category: early timepieces could bring watchmaking together with the decorative materials and forms associated with jewelry. Serpenti turns a watch into jewelry
Serpenti became one of Bvlgari’s defining ways to combine ornament and timekeeping. The company’s Serpenti heritage account traces the snake motif as a watch to the late 1940s. The form drew on the snake’s associations with Greek and Roman imagery, giving the watch a strong visual identity beyond its function as a timekeeper.
Over time, Bvlgari developed Serpenti through Tubogas bracelet construction and variations in materials and design. That evolution helped the collection remain recognizable without fixing it to one material or appearance. More detailed descriptions of individual historical movements and construction in Baines’s account are the author’s reporting, rather than specifications independently confirmed by the official heritage page.

Roma and Bvlgari Bvlgari make the name part of the design
The Roma and Bvlgari Bvlgari designs brought a different expression of Bvlgari’s Roman identity to the wrist. Baines identifies the Roma as a pivotal 1975 design. Bvlgari’s own icons history dates the Bvlgari Bvlgari timepiece to 1977, describing its launch as following the success of the BULGARI ROMA model. The repeated name around the bezel became a distinctive visual signature, rather than relying on a conventional, discreet maker’s mark.
Sportier designs and different materials
Later in the twentieth century, the story moved beyond jewelry-led forms. Baines describes Diagono as a sports-watch line and Aluminium as a design pairing aluminum with rubber. These watches broadened the brand’s visual vocabulary: Serpenti foregrounded a sculptural bracelet, Roma and Bvlgari Bvlgari made the Roman name a design element, while Diagono and Aluminium took a sportier direction and explored less traditional watch materials. The 2000s: a turn toward deeper watchmaking capability
Baines presents the 2000s as a period when Bvlgari sought to extend its capabilities beyond design-led watches. The feature describes acquisitions involving Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth, investment in manufacturing, and the development of increasingly complicated watches. Taken together, those moves mark a strategic ambition: to build a stronger technical and production base alongside the design identity established in earlier decades.
The detailed acquisition chronology, ownership and manufacturing claims, caliber specifications, production figures and degree of vertical integration in the feature should be understood as Baines’s reported history. The official heritage pages cited here establish selected design milestones, but do not independently confirm every technical or corporate detail in that account. No market-size or sales figures are established by the sources cited here.

Why this installment stops at 2010
The 2010 endpoint is meaningful rather than a date for the arrival of every later Bvlgari icon. Bvlgari’s official brand history dates the Octo debut to 2012, outside the span of this first installment. The period covered here is therefore a story of foundations and transition: from a Roman jewelry business, through signature watch designs, toward greater horological ambition by the end of the 2000s.
