The number indicates a pressure rating used in testing, not a promised usable depth. What you can do with the watch depends on its exact marking, model-specific instructions and condition.
What does “30m” actually tell you?
A depth-style marking turns a pressure rating into a familiar-looking measure of depth. Casio explains that metre indications are a pictorial representation of test pressure; they should not be read as a guarantee that the watch can be worn at that literal depth. The ISO 22810:2010 standard sets requirements and test methods for verifying water resistance and indicates the marking manufacturers may apply.
Real-world exposure is not always equivalent to the pressure represented by a static test. Casio warns that movement in water—such as vigorous swimming or a blow against the water—can create dynamic pressure greater than the stated static pressure. That is why a metre figure alone cannot answer whether a particular watch is suitable for an activity.
Why similar ratings can come with different advice
Manufacturers do not always map similar-looking pressure or depth markings to the same permitted activities. Their guidance for individual models is more useful than a generic conversion chart.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Manufacturer and marking | Published activity guidance |
|---|---|
| Casio: “Water Resist” | For splashes; not swimming. (Casio water-resistance table) |
| Casio: 5 bar | Bathing and washing are permitted; swimming is not. (Casio water-resistance table) |
| Casio: 10 bar | Swimming and snorkeling are permitted. (Casio water-resistance table) |
| Seiko: 3 bar | Splashes and rain. (Seiko water-resistance guidance) |
| Seiko: 5 bar | Swimming, yachting and showering. (Seiko water-resistance guidance) |
These tables illustrate why “30m” cannot be treated as a universal promise of swimming suitability. The guidance shown is from the named manufacturers; it is not a rule that overrides the manual for your watch. Check the marking on the case and the instructions for its exact model before exposing it to water.
Does 30m mean you can swim?
Not by itself. The mark alone does not establish that a watch is suitable for swimming, handwashing, showering or snorkeling. Casio and Seiko give different activity guidance for their respective classifications, so follow the exact watch maker’s instructions rather than assuming that a depth-style label settles the question.

For scuba diving, do not infer suitability from a general water-resistance rating. ISO distinguishes general water-resistant watches covered by ISO 22810 from scuba-diving watches covered by ISO 6425. As ISO puts it, “ISO 22810 covers watches intended only for daily use and for swimming, while ISO 6425 covers watches that can be used while scuba diving” (ISO).

Water resistance can change as a watch ages or is damaged. Seiko says it is not permanently guaranteed and can be affected by aging gaskets or deformation after accidental shock. A case that has been opened for battery service also deserves attention: ask the service provider about inspection of the water resistance rather than assuming the original rating still applies.

Casio recommends periodic gasket replacement about every two or three years and technician inspection of water resistance during battery replacement. That interval is Casio’s guidance, not a universal service schedule for every brand and model. For an older watch, one that has taken a hard knock, or one with an uncertain service history, seek the manufacturer’s or a qualified watch technician’s advice before relying on its water resistance.

How to decide what your watch can handle
- Read the exact marking. Check whether the case says “Water Resist,” gives a bar or metre rating, or identifies the watch as a diver’s watch.
- Find the manual for the exact model. Use its activity guidance for the exposure you have in mind—such as rain, swimming, showering, snorkeling or scuba diving. Do not substitute another maker’s table or a generic chart.
- Consider age and service history. Gasket aging, accidental shock and case opening can affect water resistance. If the condition is uncertain, ask a qualified technician about an inspection.
- Stay within the stated use. A rating is not permission to test the watch at its named depth, and movement in water can create pressure beyond a static rating.
