Cardio Recovery: What It Means on Apple Watch and iPhone

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cardio Recovery is Apple’s name for heart-rate recovery after exercise: an estimate of how many beats per minute your heart rate falls, commonly using the one-minute value after a workout. A larger drop generally means faster recovery, but Apple does not publish one universal “good” cutoff for every person. It is different from Cardio Fitness, Apple’s estimated VO₂ max.

What Cardio Recovery measures

Your heart rate rises during exercise and normally declines when the effort stops. Cardio Recovery describes that decline. The HealthKit quantity introduced for this feature is the one-minute recovery value, identified by Apple as heartRateRecoveryOneMinute. The commonly used interpretation is the difference between heart rate near the end of exercise and the reading about one minute later.

Apple does not publish every detail of the calculation, including which end-of-workout sample is selected in every situation. Treat the value as an estimate from wearable measurements, not a direct clinical measurement of cardiac function.

During an Apple Workout session, the watch measures heart rate continuously and continues sensing for up to three minutes after you end the workout to determine workout recovery. See Apple’s heart-rate documentation and the HealthKit WWDC22 session.

Cardio Recovery versus Cardio Fitness

Metric What it represents Typical Apple label Where it appears
Cardio Recovery How quickly heart rate falls after exertion Cardio Recovery; older articles may say Heart Rate Recovery Health heart data and workout-recovery details
Cardio Fitness Estimated VO₂ max—the maximum oxygen your body can use during exercise Cardio Fitness Health > Heart > Cardio Fitness and Fitness trends

These metrics answer different questions. Cardio Fitness is generated from eligible outdoor walking, running, or hiking workouts and passive measurements; Apple lists support for Apple Watch Series 3 or later, an estimate range of 14–65 mL/kg/min, and requirements such as age, sex, weight, height, and certain medications. An initial estimate can require at least 24 hours of watch wear plus several eligible workouts and passive measurements. Details are in Apple’s Cardio Fitness guide. Cardio Recovery is not a VO₂ max score, so one can look favorable while the other changes after a particular workout.

How to find Cardio Recovery on iPhone

  1. Open Health.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Tap Heart.
  4. Select Cardio Recovery.
  5. Review the available day, week, month, six-month, or year charts.
  6. Tap Show All Data or an individual entry to inspect workout-level records, if those controls appear in your version of iOS.

Apple changes labels and chart controls by iOS release, language, device, and whether any records exist. Health stores Apple Watch data in the Heart category; its general data guide is at Intro to Health data on iPhone. Some users may see the term “Heart Rate Recovery” in older software or third-party explanations.

Inspect one workout in Fitness

  1. Open Fitness on iPhone.
  2. Open your workout or session history.
  3. Select the workout.
  4. Open its heart-rate details.
  5. Review the post-workout heart-rate graph.

The graph can show several minutes of recovery, while Cardio Recovery is a Health data type centered on the one-minute sample. A graph may therefore be present even when a separate Health sample was not saved. Apple’s workout-summary instructions are in End and view a summary of your workout.

Can you view it directly on Apple Watch?

After ending a workout normally, keep the watch on your wrist and use the workout summary or the Heart Rate app to view post-workout heart-rate information where available. Apple documents continued sensing for the post-workout period, but does not promise a permanent, dedicated Cardio Recovery dashboard on every watch model or watchOS release. The watch’s heart-rate reference is Check your heart rate on Apple Watch; use iPhone Health for the longer-term Cardio Recovery history.

Is a higher Cardio Recovery score better?

Usually, a larger first-minute fall suggests faster recovery when you compare the same person under similar conditions. That is a trend interpretation, not a diagnosis. Apple provides no single threshold that applies across ages, fitness levels, medications, workout types, and recovery protocols.

  • Compare several similar sessions rather than one unusual result.
  • End workouts in a consistent way and remain still during the initial recovery period.
  • Do not compare your number directly with another person’s number.
  • Do not use it to rule in or rule out heart disease or to replace a supervised clinical test.

Apple states that Apple Watch is not a medical device. A low result can follow fatigue, illness, heat, dehydration, poor sleep, alcohol, stress, medication effects, unusually hard exercise, movement during recovery, or an unreliable sensor reading.

Why Cardio Recovery may be missing

  1. The workout did not end normally. Pausing, removing the watch, immediately starting another activity, or otherwise interrupting collection can prevent a recovery sample. End the session through the Workout app and leave the watch in place for the post-workout sensing window.
  2. Heart-rate access is off. On Apple Watch, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Heart Rate. In the iPhone Watch app, check My Watch > Privacy > Heart Rate.
  3. Contact is poor. Tighten the band comfortably, wear the watch against clean, dry skin, and avoid clothing between the sensor and wrist. Sweat, water, dirt, cold skin, tattoos, and vigorous wrist movement can reduce optical readings. Apple’s sensor guidance is in this heart-rate guide and this monitoring guide.
  4. A third-party app recorded the workout. Apps can write workouts to Health without reproducing Apple’s exact workout-and-recovery workflow. Results depend on how the app starts and ends sessions and whether it writes the relevant HealthKit data. Apple’s Workout app is the most consistent choice for Apple-generated recovery records.
  5. Usable heart-rate samples were insufficient. A workout can appear in Fitness while no recovery value is saved if the watch could not obtain reliable readings.
  6. Health sources or permissions differ. Open the relevant heart or recovery data type in Health, choose Data Sources & Access, confirm the intended watch or app may write data, and review competing sources. See Manage Health data.
  7. Software and interface versions differ. HealthKit added the Cardio Recovery type in iOS 16, associated with watchOS 9-era terminology. Current hardware and software do not all expose identical screens or behavior.

After checking these items, repeat a similar workout with the native Workout app, a secure fit, and three uninterrupted minutes of post-workout wear. Update and restart the watch and iPhone if ordinary software troubleshooting is appropriate.

What can change the reading?

  • Workout type, duration, and intensity
  • Stopping at a different point or continuing to walk instead of resting
  • Whether you are sitting, standing, or moving during recovery
  • Heat, humidity, and dehydration
  • Illness or infection
  • Sleep loss, psychological stress, alcohol, or stimulants
  • Medications that affect heart rate
  • Band fit, skin contact, tattoos, sweat, dirt, and wrist motion
  • Low-power or low-battery behavior
  • Switching between Apple’s Workout app and another recorder
  • Use of a chest strap or other external sensor, whose support and HealthKit write behavior can vary by app, accessory, and software version

For a useful personal trend, repeat comparable workouts, stop them consistently, stay still afterward, and interpret a series of readings rather than reacting to one data point.

Is Cardio Recovery medically reliable?

It is a convenient wellness and fitness estimate from an optical wrist sensor, not equivalent to a supervised exercise test with clinical instrumentation. It can help you notice a persistent change, but it cannot diagnose a condition or guarantee that your heart is healthy.

Repeat an unexpectedly low value under normal conditions and consider recent illness, heat, dehydration, unusual exertion, sleep, alcohol, and medication changes. Contact a healthcare professional if an unexplained change persists. Seek urgent care for concerning symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or sustained palpitations.

Bottom line

Cardio Recovery is Apple Watch heart-rate recovery after exercise, usually represented by the one-minute drop. Cardio Fitness is a separate VO₂ max estimate. Use the Apple Workout app, keep the watch on for the post-workout sensing period, and compare consistent sessions over time. Treat the number as a personal trend—not a universal grade or medical diagnosis.
