What makes the Clé de Cartier distinctive?
Cartier introduced the collection at SIHH in 2015. Its defining features are a curved case profile, gently rounded bezel, tapered horns, and a jewel-like crown. Turning the crown to set the watch is meant to evoke winding a clock with a key. The crown is set with a blue sapphire on some versions; the cited steel reference uses synthetic blue spinel.
The curved profile and rounded bezel give the Clé a softer, more sculptural appearance than a conventional flat-sided dress watch. The design remains recognizable across different case sizes and metals, although gem-set bezels and skeleton dials make individual versions look substantially different.
Which movement is inside?
1847 MC automatic
The principal 35 mm and 40 mm automatic models described at launch use Cartier’s 1847 MC, with a published 42-hour power reserve. It winds in both directions. Cartier’s launch account described a specially developed barrel and lever system intended to support winding efficiency and chronometric stability. Independent hands-on coverage characterized it as Cartier’s newer general-purpose in-house caliber; that positioning is not evidence of a particular accuracy advantage.

9612 MC Automatic Skeleton
The 41 mm Automatic Skeleton is a different proposition, with caliber 9612 MC and a published 48-hour reserve at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Its bridges are shaped around Roman-numeral positions, while a largely hidden 22-carat-gold rotor keeps the movement visible. The open architecture prioritizes movement display over the uncluttered dial and instant legibility of a conventional model.
Sizes, materials, and documented configurations
The collection spans 31, 35, 40, and 41 mm, but those dimensions do not mean every size uses the same movement or construction. Check the exact reference rather than inferring specifications from diameter alone.

Is the Clé de Cartier a good everyday watch?
It can work as an everyday dress watch if the owner wants a distinctive, relatively refined case and is comfortable treating it carefully. The cited 35 mm steel and 41 mm skeleton references are rated at 3 bar, approximately 30 metres. That is splash and routine moisture protection, not a swimming or diving rating. Water resistance is reference-specific, and the watch’s age and service condition can also matter in practice.

- Think twice if: you need a sports watch, routinely swim with your watch, prefer a highly legible simple dial, or want a model whose current pricing and availability are straightforward to verify.
- Compare fit directly: 35 mm and 40 mm are useful starting points, but wrist circumference, case curvature, strap or bracelet, and the desired visual presence matter more than gender labels.

What to check before buying a pre-owned Clé
- Identify the reference. Match the case/reference number to the claimed size, metal, setting, movement, and configuration. Do not assume all 31 mm models share one caliber.
- Inspect case and clasp condition. Look for dents, excessive polishing, damage around the crown, and wear or deformation at the clasp and bracelet links.
- Test the crown carefully. Check that winding and setting feel consistent and that the crown seats properly. A key-shaped crown should not be forced if it feels rough or catches.
- Check dial and hands. Confirm they appear appropriate to the reference and ask whether any parts have been replaced. Originality can affect both value and collector appeal.
- Ask for service documentation. Request dated records and clarify what work was done. A seller’s statement that a watch was serviced is less useful than documentation identifying the work.
- Review provenance and authentication. Examine box and papers where available, but do not treat accessories alone as proof of authenticity. Use a qualified watch professional or trusted authentication route if anything is uncertain.
- Verify the price and seller. Confirm current availability, seller status, and comparable authenticated examples before committing; historic launch pricing and a regional catalogue listing do not establish today’s market value.
