What is the Cartier Tank à Guichets?
Cartier dates the Tank à Guichets design to 1928 and presents the 2025 watch as a new Cartier Privé opus. “Guichets” refers to the small windows, or apertures, through which the time is read. Cartier calls the display digital in its editorial, but it is mechanical: there is no electronic screen, and the watch has no conventional central hands.
Instead, numbered discs sit beneath the apertures. The hour changes by jumping forward at the turn of the hour; the minute indication advances gradually. Richemont’s official announcement describes the arrangement as a “‘jumping’ hour and ‘dragging’ minute mechanism” in which “aesthetic boldness converses with technical innovation.”
How to read the two apertures
- Hour, at 10 o’clock: Read the hour numeral visible through the upper-left aperture. It jumps to the next hour rather than moving continuously.
- Minutes, at 4 o’clock: Read the minute indication through the lower-right aperture. Its disc drags forward as the minutes pass.
Cartier’s Brazil listing for WGTA0392 specifies gold-finished discs, burgundy Arabic numerals and a black minute track. The offset windows make the display part of the watch’s design rather than a conventional dial layout.

Why the display suits the Tank case
The Tank à Guichets keeps the Tank’s rectangular case but treats the face as a compact architectural surface, with the apertures integrated into it. On the platinum WGTA0392, Cartier lists dimensions of 37.6 × 24.8 mm and a thickness of 6 mm. The case’s long, narrow proportions give the two separate readings room without resorting to a broad round dial.
Cartier specifies a 950 platinum case and crown for this reference. Hodinkee’s March 31, 2025 launch coverage also notes the crown at 12 o’clock; Cartier’s product listing is the source for the detailed specifications.

What to know about daily wear
Cartier states that WGTA0392 is not water resistant, so it is not a watch to expose to water. The hand-wound movement also means the wearer must wind it; Cartier’s listed approximate reserve is 42 hours when fully wound. The unusual aperture display favors a distinctive way of reading time over the familiar glance at central hands.
