The Casio MRG-B2100B-1A—also written MRGB2100B-1A—is the MR-G family’s premium take on the octagonal 2100 design. It retains the familiar analog-digital G-SHOCK layout, but replaces the resin-focused construction of entry-level 2100 models with titanium and hard alloys, a 27-piece bezel, sapphire crystal and extensive hand finishing. It is a connected, solar-powered quartz tool watch dressed as a Japanese luxury object; its appeal rests more on materials and execution than on functions unavailable in far less expensive G-SHOCKs.
What the MRG-B2100B-1A is
Casio’s preferred reference is MRG-B2100B-1A; retailers and collectors often omit the hyphen and call it MRGB2100B-1A. MR-G is G-SHOCK’s flagship line, B2100 identifies the MR-G interpretation of the 2100 design, and the B-1A suffix identifies this black version. The 2100 debuted in 2019, translating the octagonal visual language of the original G-SHOCK into a slimmer analog-digital format. Casio’s 2100 guide traces that design family.
This is not simply a metal-clad GA-2100. Its case, bezel, bracelet, dial construction, crown protection and finishing are distinct. The timekeeping remains quartz, with solar charging, radio control and Bluetooth rather than a mechanical movement or GPS navigation. Casio’s official MR-G feature page lists the materials and functions.
What the price buys: construction and finishing
A 27-piece bezel
The bezel is assembled from 27 separately finished components. Casio says each is polished before assembly, allowing finish work in areas that would be difficult to reach on a single-piece bezel. The result is a layered, faceted surface characteristic of MR-G. The component count explains the construction and finishing effort; it is not, by itself, proof of greater impact resistance. COBARION, DAT55G and Ti64
- COBARION: used for the top bezel. Casio describes it as about four times harder than pure titanium.
- DAT55G: used for bracelet links. Casio describes it as about three times harder than pure titanium.
- Ti64 titanium: used for the case, case back and buttons.
- Sapphire crystal: fitted with an anti-reflective coating.
Those hardness comparisons are Casio’s material claims, not guarantees that the watch cannot be scratched or damaged. Hardness of the underlying alloy does not make a black surface coating immune to marks, nor does it prevent impact damage. Casio describes hand-finished diamond-like coatings; calling the entire watch “DLC” without qualification would obscure the different materials and surfaces involved.
A black finish that remains architectural
The dark treatment gives the watch a stealthier look than a bright metal MR-G, while polished facets and contrasting surfaces preserve the case’s geometry. The model’s black-on-black presentation may appeal to buyers who want a less reflective overall appearance, but legibility cannot be settled from the specification sheet: contrast between hands, markers and dial, and the readability of the digital windows, need to be judged in person.

Kigumi inspiration, with a solar purpose
The dial’s lattice-like openings and corrugated base refer to kigumi, Japanese interlocking wood joinery. The reference is visual and structural inspiration; the watch contains no wooden joinery mechanism. Its geometric openings also let light reach the solar cell, so the dial is not simply an opaque black surface. Casio highlights a two-part 12 o’clock index and precision processing associated with Yamagata Casio’s manufacturing capabilities.
Protection and everyday functions
Shock resistance and crown protection
Casio’s Multi-Guard Structure uses buffering between bezel and case components. The crown is protected while preserving the 2100 profile, and its MR-G logo is designed to sit horizontally when the crown is screw-locked. These details address the vulnerability of a protruding crown without turning the watch into a conventional resin-cased G-SHOCK.

Timekeeping, charging and water resistance
- Tough Solar: charges from light and reduces routine battery changes, but the watch still needs adequate light exposure.
- Multiband 6: receives time-calibration signals where a compatible transmitter is accessible. It is not GPS, and reception depends on location and conditions.
- Bluetooth Smartphone Link: supports time adjustment and settings through Casio’s app.
- Magnetic resistance: rated by Casio as compliant with ISO 764.
- Water resistance: rated to 200 meters by Casio. This is a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee that seals remain sound indefinitely; follow Casio’s operating guidance and have seals checked as appropriate.
- Other listed functions: automatic hand-home-position correction, Super Illuminator LED light, date and day display.
What the app adds—and what it does not
The watch remains a quartz timepiece without an active phone connection. Bluetooth is not needed continuously for basic timekeeping, and Multiband 6 can synchronize independently where radio reception is available. Pairing with the CASIO WATCHES app adds automatic adjustment up to four times daily, easy setting, status display, solar-generation and reception-history information, self-check, Time & Place logging, phone finder and access to a Premium Production Line certificate. Some settings, diagnostics and status details are app-based, so buyers who want a completely phone-independent experience should consider that trade-off. Check current CASIO WATCHES app compatibility for your phone before buying; a current operating-system compatibility matrix is not established here.

Casio’s GA-B2100 page covers that model’s feature set. The comparison is not a claim that every GA-B2100 variant has identical specifications, or that each listed function is exclusive to MR-G. The biggest upgrade here is the exterior and its construction, not a wholly different approach to basic quartz timekeeping.
Which alternative makes more sense?
- GA-2100: choose it for the 2100 silhouette, resin construction and a more accessible G-SHOCK proposition.
- GA-B2100: a more rational choice when Tough Solar and Bluetooth matter more than titanium, sapphire and MR-G finishing.
- MRG-B2100D: consider this related MR-G 2100 if you prefer a brighter metal appearance; Casio lists it in the MR-G 2100 collection.

Price, value and who should buy it
A Taiwan launch announcement dated July 3, 2024, listed a suggested retail price of NT$155,000; that is a regional, dated price, not a current US MSRP. Casio’s Taiwan announcement is the source for that figure. The case for paying a luxury price is strongest if the 2100 shape, carefully finished surfaces, hard alloys, sapphire and Japanese design references are the point. The case is weak if the priority is maximum function per dollar: a GA-B2100 brings solar and Bluetooth to the same broad design family at a much lower price tier. This MR-G also is not a mechanical watch, a GPS watch, or a conventional smartwatch.
Without a verified hands-on inspection, claims about wrist comfort, weight, bracelet articulation, fingerprinting, apparent size and real-world legibility would be guesswork. Those are consequential here: try it on if possible, and assess the dark dial and digital displays in the lighting where you expect to use it.
