That is a software milestone, not a shutdown. The watches should keep working, and owners do not need to replace one simply because this update has arrived.
Which Galaxy Watches are affected?
The lifecycle news is about the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic, launched in 2021. Samsung included both in its commitment to provide up to four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades. “Up to” matters: it is not a promise that every model, region, and carrier receives identical updates on the same schedule.
| Model | What this update cycle means | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch4 | One UI 8 Watch is reported as its last major platform update. | Install it if offered; keep using the watch if its battery, apps, and features still meet your needs. |
| Galaxy Watch4 Classic | The same major-update lifecycle applies. | Check for the update and assess the watch’s condition before considering replacement. |
| Galaxy Watch5, Watch5 Pro, Watch FE, Watch6 and later | They are not the models at the center of this Watch4 end-of-cycle report. Their update timing and support should be checked separately. | Do not infer their support status from the Watch4 rollout. |
The reported sequence—One UI 8 Watch reaching the Watch5 family and Watch FE before the Watch4 series—fits the interpretation that the Watch4 update is the end of its major-update cycle, not a general shutdown of older Galaxy Watches. Samsung’s earlier One UI 6 Watch rollout included several older models but brought only selected newer features.
What is One UI 8 Watch, and what changes?
One UI 8 Watch is Samsung’s watch interface based on Wear OS 6. Reports on the Watch4 rollout describe refreshed icons and text, more compact menus, a Now Bar-style watch-face widget, reorganized notifications, and performance and battery-life optimizations. These are interface and platform changes, not a promise that every feature on newer watches comes to Watch4.

- Rotating Bezel Navigation: Physical rotating bezel allows precise and intuitive control of apps and menus.
Samsung’s own description of the earlier One UI 6 Watch rollout called out selective features for older devices. Hardware-dependent health functions require the relevant sensors, and some capabilities may also depend on a compatible Samsung phone, app version, or regional approval. A new operating-system version alone cannot add missing hardware.
Reported firmware examples include R861XXU1CYK6 at about 1.9 GB and R870XXU1JYK4 at about 1.7 GB. These are rollout examples reported in Germany and South Korea, not universal U.S. firmware identifiers or evidence that every variant received the update simultaneously.
What “the chapter is closing” does—and does not—mean
- Major upgrades: One UI 8 Watch is best treated as the Watch4 family’s final major One UI Watch/Wear OS release, based on the reported rollout and Samsung’s up-to-four-year upgrade commitment.
- Everyday use: The update cycle ending does not automatically disable timekeeping, notifications, workouts, Bluetooth pairing, Samsung Health functions, or installed apps. Those depend on the watch, phone, services, and apps continuing to work together.
- Security: Samsung’s cited Watch policy does not establish a guaranteed final security-patch date for Watch4. Its separate five-year security language for selected Galaxy devices should not be assumed to apply to these watches. Fewer or no future fixes would increase long-term uncertainty, but there is no basis here to say the watches became unsafe overnight.
- Compatibility: Over time, Android, Galaxy Wearable, Google Play services, Samsung Health, and third-party apps can change independently. A watch that pairs today is not guaranteed to remain compatible with every future phone or app release.
In short, this is the end of the Watch4’s expected major-update runway—not proof that Samsung has stopped every form of support or that the hardware has a “dead date.”

How to check for and install the update
Samsung’s software-update instructions cover updating through Galaxy Wearable; Wear OS Galaxy Watches may also offer an update control on the watch itself. Menu wording can vary by model, phone, app version, and region.
- Charge the watch and connect it to the phone it is paired with.
- Open Galaxy Wearable and select the watch.
- Open the watch’s software-update section and choose Download and install, or the equivalent control shown in your app.
- Keep the watch connected and charged while the update downloads and installs. If your watch offers an on-watch software-update option, you can check there as well.
If no update appears, that does not by itself mean the watch is ineligible. Rollouts can be staged and vary by region, model variant, and carrier approval. Update the phone and Galaxy Wearable app, charge the watch, try a stable Wi-Fi connection, and restart both devices before checking again later. If it remains stuck, contact Samsung support rather than installing firmware intended for another model or region.
Will a Watch4 still work with your phone?
Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic among watches that can work with compatible Android phones, subject to the phone’s requirements and services. Compatibility is not a guarantee of long-term support. Check Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch phone-compatibility guidance for your specific phone and Android version before pairing or buying.

- Rotating Bezel Navigation: Physical rotating bezel allows precise and intuitive control of apps and menus.
Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS Galaxy Watches are not compatible with iPhone, because they rely on Google Play services. Samsung also notes that certain older Gear and Galaxy Watch models are not compatible with Samsung phones released with Android 14; that warning should not be generalized to every model. For the Watch4, verify the exact combination rather than assuming that any Android phone will work.

For an owner whose watch pairs reliably, holds enough charge, and covers the needed features, keeping it is a reasonable choice. There is no need to spend money solely because the last major update has arrived. The decision changes if battery degradation, app incompatibility, unreliable phone pairing, or a need for newer health features is already limiting the watch.

| Situation | More sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your Watch4 meets your needs and its battery is acceptable. | Keep it and install available updates. | A lifecycle milestone alone does not make a working watch unusable. |
| The battery is poor, pairing is unreliable, or an essential feature is missing. | Compare replacement options. | The practical problem—not the update headline—is the reason to spend. |
| You are buying used or refurbished. | Buy only at a substantial discount, with a meaningful return policy or warranty. | Account for battery condition and the shorter remaining major-update runway, not just the sticker price. |
| You want a longer platform runway or current-generation capabilities. | Favor a newer model, after checking its price and required features. | Newer hardware is a better fit for buyers prioritizing future support and newer sensors. |
| You use an iPhone. | Do not choose a Wear OS Galaxy Watch. | Samsung’s compatibility guidance excludes these watches from iOS. |
If replacing it, compare the actual price gap after any trade-in rather than treating an older Watch4 as a bargain by default. A Samsung U.S. MSRP sheet dated June 2026 lists Watch8 Bluetooth models from $349.99 to $379.99, LTE models from $399.99 to $429.99, Watch8 Classic Bluetooth at $499.99 and LTE at $549.99, and Watch Ultra configurations at $649.99. These are MSRP figures, not guaranteed live sale prices; Samsung’s Watch8 page and June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet provide the relevant reference points. Prices, promotions, and stock can change.

For basic notifications and exercise tracking, an expensive Classic or Ultra may be unnecessary. Consider the Classic if its traditional design and rotating bezel justify the premium for you; consider the Ultra if its rugged, outdoor-oriented features are the point. Watch FE, Watch5, Watch5 Pro, or Watch7 can be budget alternatives only if their current price is meaningfully lower and you have checked support, battery condition if used, warranty, and the features you actually need. Do not assume a particular model is available or better value without checking current listings.
If pairing or a feature fails after the update
A feature is missing
Not every feature from a newer watch transfers to an older one. Check whether it requires newer sensors, a Samsung Galaxy phone, a specific One UI or Samsung Health version, or country-specific approval. An interface update cannot satisfy a hardware requirement.
The watch will not pair after a phone upgrade
Start with Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and related plug-in updates, then confirm the phone against Samsung’s compatibility requirements and restart both devices. Avoid factory-resetting as the first step: it can erase locally stored watch data. If Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance calls for removing stale Bluetooth pairings or resetting, sync or back up important health data first and follow the instructions for your model.
