G-Shock became an icon by making toughness visible. Its protective construction gave the watch a practical purpose; its bold, unmistakable shapes made that purpose part of the design. The result is not one model but a family: the original square DW-5000C, the round DW-6900, specialist Frogman divers, premium MR-Gs and the modern octagonal GA-2100 each represent a different chapter.
Why Casio made the G-Shock
The origin story begins with Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe and a watch he had received from his father that was damaged after being dropped. Casio’s account presents that experience as the catalyst for a watch designed to withstand impacts. It is a memorable origin story, but the engineering challenge matters more than the anecdote: make a practical watch that could survive a hard life without losing its essential functions.
Casio says its Project Team Tough developed more than 200 prototypes before the first G-Shock appeared in 1983. A frequently repeated “triple ten” description summarizes the original ambitions as surviving a 10-metre drop, offering a 10-year battery and resisting water to 10 bar. Treat those figures as historical design goals, not as a guarantee for every G-Shock or a specification that applies to modern models. Casio’s 40th-anniversary history and its GA-B2100 history page recount the development and later evolution.
How G-Shock resists impact
A G-Shock is not simply a conventional watch inside a thick shell. Its design treats the quartz module—the mechanism and electronics that keep time—as something to isolate and protect. The case, cushioning and surrounding components work together to absorb or redirect shocks before they reach vulnerable parts.

In its account of the original DW-5000C, Time+Tide describes a floating internal module, urethane foam, a rubber bumper, a steel inner case and caseback, mineral glass, elongated button shafts and a cushioning strap design. That is a description of the original’s construction, not a blueprint for every G-Shock. Later families adapted the protective idea with different case geometries and materials, including carbon reinforcement and Carbon Core Guard structures. Time+Tide’s history of the G-Shock discusses the original construction and subsequent technical changes.
- The module: The watch’s vulnerable working core is protected rather than left to take an impact directly.
- The case and cushioning: The outer structure helps manage shocks, with designs varying among model families.
- The exposed details: Bezel guards and protected buttons help shield components without making every model identical.
“Indestructible” is cultural shorthand, not a literal promise. Crystals can crack, resin can age or break, electronics can fail, and water resistance can decline as seals deteriorate. G-Shock’s achievement is a durable design philosophy, not immunity to every kind of damage.
The G-Shock icons, in historical order
Here, “icon” means a model or family that established a lasting design language, marked a technical or audience shift, or became recognizable beyond watch enthusiasts. The list is selective rather than a ranking of every notable release.
| Model or family | What it represents | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| DW-5000C | The first G-Shock, launched in 1983 | The square digital design and protective concept became the foundation for the 5000 and 5600 families. |
| DW-5600 / 5600 family | The enduring square format | A practical continuation of the original visual language, now offered in versions with different modules, displays and power systems. |
| Frogman | G-Shock’s specialist dive-watch branch | It helped establish the Master of G identity for watches aimed at demanding outdoor and professional uses. |
| DW-6900 | The round, graphic G-Shock | Its three sub-dials and front G button gave the brand a more overtly 1990s, collaboration-friendly look. |
| MR-G | The premium metal interpretation | It brought G-Shock’s protective concept into a luxury-oriented metal line. |
| GA-2100 | The modern octagonal design | It introduced a slimmer-looking analog-digital direction while retaining recognizable G-Shock cues. |
1983: DW-5000C, the foundation
The DW-5000C is the first G-Shock and the reference point for the brand’s square design. Its importance is more than chronological: the guarded, layered case and digital display established a visual formula that later squares could reinterpret. A current square may share that lineage without being a direct reissue; modules, materials, displays and features differ.

Original examples are vintage collectibles, not ordinary entry-level purchases. Time+Tide reported that mint examples could trade above US$2,000, but that is a secondary-market observation, not a current fixed price. Condition, originality, provenance and timing all affect vintage value.
The 5600 family: the square carried forward
The 5600 family keeps the square as G-Shock’s clearest expression of its original identity. Its appeal is legibility and visual simplicity, but specifications vary: a basic quartz model is not equivalent to a solar, radio-controlled or Bluetooth-connected variant. Check the exact reference and module rather than buying on family name alone.
Display choice is practical, too. A negative LCD—light characters against a dark background—can look striking but may be harder to read in dim or oblique light than a positive display. Resin bezels and straps are durable, yet consumable: heat, sunlight, chemicals and age can eventually take their toll.
Frogman: the specialist diver
Frogman represents G-Shock’s move into purpose-built specialist watches. Time+Tide identifies the original Frogman as the first G-Shock to receive ISO 6425 certification and as a starting point for the Master of G collection. That is a significant historical claim; check the documentation for the exact Frogman reference when certification matters.

- Water resistant 200m (660ft): in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving
Water resistance and dive-watch certification are not interchangeable. A watch can be water-resistant without being a certified dive watch, and water resistance is not permanent: seals age, and opening a case can affect its protection. For swimming or diving, follow the exact model’s instructions and have its seals checked as appropriate.
1995: DW-6900 and the round silhouette
The DW-6900 gave the brand an alternative to the square: a round case, three sub-dials and a prominent front G button. Time+Tide dates the family to 1995 and describes it, alongside the square, as one of G-Shock’s most recognizable designs. Its graphic face also lends itself to collaborations and color-led editions. A current collaboration example is Casio’s DW-6900SK-1 product page; availability and specifications depend on market and reference.
MR-G: metal and premium positioning
MR-G is the high-end metal branch of the G-Shock family. Time+Tide identifies the MRG-100 as the beginning of the line and describes the engineering challenge of combining metal construction with shock protection. The result is a different proposition from a resin tool watch: finishing and materials take a more prominent role, usually alongside greater weight and a much more luxury-oriented purchase rationale.
MR-G is not automatically a better G-Shock. A buyer who wants an easy-wearing, replaceable everyday tool may prefer resin; a buyer who values metal construction and finishing may consider the premium worthwhile. Those are different priorities, not a simple quality ladder.

2019: GA-2100 and the modern octagon
Casio says the GA-2100 launched in 2019, combining an analog-digital display with a relatively slim, octagonal case. The design draws on earlier G-Shock elements, including the DW-5000 and AW-500. Its informal nickname, “CasiOak,” is a cultural label, not Casio’s official model name. The octagonal bezel gives the watch a more restrained outline than many large, aggressively guarded G-Shocks, helping it appeal to people who want the brand’s toughness without the classic square look.
The GA-B2100 is a distinct feature variant of the 2100 platform: Casio lists Tough Solar and Bluetooth connectivity for it. Those features are model-specific, so do not assume a GA-2100 has them. Bluetooth can simplify configuration and synchronization, but its usefulness depends on phone compatibility, regional app support and whether the wearer wants a phone involved at all. Casio’s 2100-family page explains the design lineage and the GA-B2100 features.
Modern technical squares
Current square models can combine a familiar outline with substantial electronics. For example, Casio’s UK listing for the GW-BX5600-1 specifies Tough Solar, Multiband 6 radio control, Bluetooth, a memory-in-pixel LCD and bio-based resin. Those are specifications for that exact listed reference, not the whole 5600 family; radio-control usefulness and availability also depend on region. Casio’s GW-BX5600-1 product page gives its listed details.
Casio’s anniversary timeline also identifies the 110 family as a 2010 milestone and records anniversary models for G-Shock’s 40th year in 2023. Casio reported a milestone of 100 million G-Shocks sold in September 2017; that is a company-reported figure from that date, not a current audited sales total. Casio’s 40th-anniversary timeline covers these brand milestones.

How a work-minded design became a cultural icon
From practical toughness to a public test
G-Shock was initially aimed at people who needed a watch for physically demanding work; construction workers are among the audiences identified in Time+Tide’s account. An American advertisement showed a G-Shock in a hockey-related impact test. According to that account, skepticism about the advert led to television testing that helped build the DW-5200C’s “Hero” reputation. That story is best treated as an attributed part of the brand’s popular history, rather than as an independently established account of every detail.
From skateboarding to collaborations
Casio says skateboarders adopted G-Shock, and its history describes the watch spreading through music, fashion, sport and urban art. The shift worked because the watch already looked like what it claimed to be: bold guards, visible structure and strong color made resilience part of its appearance. Collaborations then gave familiar shapes new meanings for particular audiences.
A collaboration or limited production run can make a watch distinctive, but scarcity alone does not establish long-term collector value. Historical significance, design, demand, condition, provenance and serviceability matter as well. Official collaborations should also be distinguished from aftermarket customization, which is not the same as a Casio-issued edition.
Which G-Shock should you choose?
| If you want… | Start with… | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| The closest everyday expression of the original | A current square in the 5600 or 5000 family | Exact module, display polarity, power system and whether it has the connectivity you need. |
| A modern shape with analog hands | GA-2100 | Whether the specific variant offers solar charging or Bluetooth; do not infer either from the family name. |
| The 2100 design with solar and phone features | GA-B2100 | Phone compatibility, local app support and whether connected setup suits you. |
| A square with advanced timekeeping and display features | A technical square such as the listed GW-BX5600-1 | Regional radio coverage, exact module and the listed product’s regional availability. |
| A watch for specialized water or outdoor use | Frogman or another Master of G model | Certification and capabilities of the exact reference, not just the G-Shock name. |
| Metal construction and luxury finishing | MR-G | Weight, cost and whether premium materials matter more to you than resin’s lighter, utilitarian character. |
| A vintage piece with historical character | An original or period-correct vintage reference | Resin age, module operation, replaced parts, authenticity, documentation and water-resistance uncertainty. |
Model prefixes can help narrow a search, but they are clues rather than guarantees. DW is commonly associated with basic digital quartz families; GW often signals solar and radio-controlled models; GA commonly indicates analog-digital designs; GB appears on Bluetooth variants in some families; MR-G names the premium metal line. Features still vary by exact reference and region, so use the official product page before purchase.
Ownership details that matter after the purchase
- Resin care: Rinse salt and sweat away, clean gently and avoid prolonged heat or strong sunlight. Bezel and strap replacements vary by model and market; use the exact reference when checking parts.
- Water protection: Seals can age, and improper opening can compromise water resistance. Do not treat a rating as permanent assurance for an old or unserviced watch.
- Battery and service: A quartz watch may need battery service; neglected batteries can leak. Before buying an older model, establish whether the module works and whether suitable parts or service are available.
- Vintage condition: Old resin, replaced components, uncertain provenance and assembled or counterfeit examples can complicate a purchase. A modern model may be the more dependable daily watch even if the vintage reference is more historically important.
- Connectivity: Solar charging, radio reception and Bluetooth each solve different problems. A phone-independent basic quartz model may suit someone better than a more feature-rich watch that depends on an app or regional signal coverage.
What makes a G-Shock an icon
G-Shock did not become culturally important through engineering alone, or through fashion alone. Its construction gave it a credible purpose; its square, round and octagonal forms made that purpose recognizable; and decades of adoption and reinterpretation carried those shapes well beyond their original practical brief. The DW-5000C remains the foundation, while later icons show how far the same idea can travel.
