Its Roman numerals, patterned dial and box-style sapphire crystal soften the futuristic look, but the core idea remains delightfully eccentric: once each hour, a hammer strikes a gong. It is a compelling contrast, though the 41 mm case, 48 mm lug-to-lug span and historically reported launch prices make fit and value important parts of the decision.
What changed from the original Bel Canto?
The Classic keeps the Bel Canto’s sonnerie au passage—the passing-hour chime—but gives it a more formal face. Where the original leaned into an open, futuristic appearance, the Classic uses a more conventionally arranged time-telling subdial, Roman numerals and a laser-etched patterned dial beneath a box-style sapphire crystal. Launch coverage described four colors: Azzurro (blue), Verde (green), Argento (silver) and Oro (gold). It was announced as a core-collection model, not a limited edition. Hodinkee’s launch coverage lays out the design and specifications.
The dial pattern may look like guilloché, but it is laser-etched or laser-engraved, not traditional engine-turned, hand-worked guilloché. That distinction matters if you are choosing the watch partly for the craft behind its surface. WatchGecko’s review also distinguishes the laser treatment from hand guilloché.
How the hourly chime works
The FS01 module is based on a Sellita SW200-1 and produces one strike as each hour passes. The gong sounds in D. This is an hourly passing chime, not a minute repeater: it does not chime the time on demand. The pusher at 4 o’clock switches the chime on or off; the dial indicator changes between the chime and silent positions when the pusher is used. How audible it is will depend on the setting and listener. In his review, Hodinkee’s Mark Kauzlarich called the chime “a bit quiet” on his sample. That is one reviewer’s observation, not a universal measurement or a guarantee of how it will sound in every room. The on/off control is useful if you prefer quiet at particular times, but it does not change the mechanism into an on-demand chiming complication.
Case, proportions and everyday considerations
The case is Grade 5 titanium, 41 mm in diameter and 13 mm thick, with a 48 mm lug-to-lug measurement. The lugs are made for a 22 mm strap. Those figures suggest a watch with real wrist presence rather than a small, discreet dress watch; lug-to-lug length is especially worth checking against a watch you already find comfortable. Titanium can make a watch feel lighter than a steel equivalent, but it does not reduce the measured span across the wrist.

Water resistance is rated at 30 m (3 ATM). Treat that as splash resistance for cautious daily wear, not as a sports-watch rating or an invitation to swim with it. No lume is listed in Hodinkee’s specification table, so do not assume the Roman numerals or hands are intended for legibility in the dark.
The reported power reserve is 38 hours. The sources conflict on the movement’s winding description, so the reliable concise identification is the FS01 module based on a Sellita SW200-1, rather than a claim about winding type. For strap changes, the manual supports quick-release attachment generally. A 22 mm quick-release strap is a possible starting point, but width alone does not guarantee the correct lug-end fit or the Classic’s reported taper from 22 mm at the lugs to 16 mm at the buckle.

Price and availability: launch figures, not a current quote
Published launch-era pricing differs by region and source. Hodinkee reported US prices of $4,225 on a strap and $4,540 on a bracelet; WatchPro USA later reported $4,225 and $4,545, respectively. For the UK, WatchGecko reported £3,495 on a leather strap and £3,745 on a Grade 2 titanium bracelet. These are historical launch figures, not verified current prices. Check Christopher Ward’s live product listing for your region before making a purchase; current price and stock are not established by those reports.

At that level, the appeal is not just conventional timekeeping. You are paying for an unusual mechanical complication presented in a more formal design. Whether that feels worthwhile depends on how much you enjoy hearing an hourly chime and how strongly the Classic’s dressier styling suits your taste.

Who the Bel Canto Classic is for
- Consider it if you want a dressier alternative to the original Bel Canto’s more futuristic look without giving up its hourly chime.
- Listen before buying if the sound is central to the appeal. One review found the chime quiet on its sample, and no sound-level measurement is established.
- Check the proportions against your wrist and current watches, particularly the 48 mm lug-to-lug length and 13 mm thickness.
- Look closely at the dial if traditional hand-turned guilloché is important to you: this dial’s pattern is laser-etched or laser-engraved.
- Compare local live pricing rather than treating launch reports as today’s quote, and decide whether you prefer a strap or bracelet.
The original Bel Canto’s reception helps explain why this second act exists. WATCHPRO USA reported that it won the 2023 GPHG Petite Aiguille prize, awarded in a category for watches priced below CHF 8,000. The same outlet reported that Christopher Ward expanded production capacity ahead of the Classic launch; WatchGecko attributed monthly capacity figures of 50 pieces in November 2022 and 500 in September 2024 to co-founder and CEO Mike France. Those are historical production-capacity claims, not sales or delivery totals, and they do not establish present-day availability. WATCHPRO USA’s report provides that launch context.
