The Christopher Ward C65 Dune Automatic is the simpler three-hand watch; the C65 Dune GMT adds a separately settable 24-hour hand for tracking a second time zone. Both are 38 mm, rated to 15 ATM and use 20 mm straps. Their dimensions are nearly identical, so the practical choice comes down mainly to whether you need the GMT function and which dial or strap configuration you prefer.
This comparison draws on the manufacturer’s handbooks for the C65 Dune Automatic and C65 Dune GMT Limited Edition, alongside Fratello’s January 2025 coverage of the Aeolian refresh. It is a specification and operation comparison, not a report of hands-on wear or independent testing.
What separates the C65 Dune Automatic from the GMT?
The Automatic displays hours, minutes, seconds and the date. The GMT adds a fourth hand and an internal 24-hour scale, letting you keep a second time zone in view. The GMT handbook identifies its version as a limited run of 200 pieces; the comparison below applies to the handbook’s named models, not necessarily every later or regional configuration.

Which one suits your use?
Choose the Automatic for straightforward time and date
If you do not need to track another time zone, the Automatic provides the core display without an extra hand or 24-hour scale. Its stated reserve is 38 hours. That is the sensible choice when the GMT feature would rarely be used and you prefer the more conventional dial layout.
Choose the GMT to keep a second time zone visible
The GMT hand remains set to a second time zone while the ordinary hour and minute hands show local time. This is useful for checking home time while travelling or keeping another location in view. Its stated reserve is up to 56 hours, compared with 38 hours for the Automatic.

This is a caller-style GMT arrangement: the GMT hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour steps, but the local hour hand is not the independently jumping hand. Fratello also describes the Aeolian GMT as caller-style in its coverage of the refresh.
Consider the near-matching case size
According to the handbooks, both cases are 38 mm across and weigh 57 g. The GMT is 0.2 mm thicker and 0.1 mm longer lug-to-lug by those published measurements. Those small differences do not establish how either watch will feel on a particular wrist; dial, strap or bracelet configuration may matter more to a buyer’s preference.

How to set the GMT hand for travel
Christopher Ward’s handbook illustrates travel from London to New York: set the ordinary hour and minute hands to the destination’s local time, then set the GMT hand to London time and read it against the internal 24-hour scale. The GMT hand moves in one-hour increments.
- Set the local hour and minute hands to the destination time using the watch’s time-setting instructions.
- Adjust the GMT hand separately in one-hour steps until it points to the home-time hour on the internal 24-hour scale.
- Read home time from the 24-hour scale; read local time from the ordinary hour and minute hands.
Because the GMT hand moves by whole hours, it does not provide a separate half-hour or quarter-hour adjustment for time zones with those offsets. The handset arrangement also differs from a traveler or flyer GMT, where the local hour hand is the one that jumps independently.

Design, straps and configuration
Christopher Ward’s collection handbook says the C65 Dune takes its name from Dune du Pilat in Aquitaine and combines field-watch utility with an elegant design. The brand highlights its 38 mm Light-catcher case, applied twin-flags logo and domed crystal as design cues recalling 1960s and ’70s sports watches. That is the maker’s description of its design intent, rather than an independent design-history assessment.

Both handbooks specify a 20 mm strap width and demonstrate quick-release strap changes. That gives owners a common width to search for when considering an alternate or replacement strap, but width alone does not guarantee compatibility: check the attachment design and buckle fit before buying a third-party strap. Dial color and whether a particular version is supplied on a strap or bracelet are also worth comparing on the specific listing.
Water resistance and care
Both watches are rated by Christopher Ward at 15 ATM (150 metres). The handbooks describe that rating as suitable for open-water snorkelling, but they also warn that impacts, arm movement, temperature changes and seal condition can affect real-world water resistance. The rating should not be treated here as a blanket assurance for scuba diving or as a substitute for checking the watch’s condition.
- Screw the crown fully down to maintain the stated water resistance.
- The Automatic handbook warns against correcting the date between 20:00 and 02:00, when the date gearing is already aligning for a change.
- The GMT handbook recommends servicing every three to four years. It also states that third-party service or repair voids its guarantee; confirm the terms that apply to your purchase directly with Christopher Ward.
The GMT handbook describes a 60-day return policy for an unused watch and a 60-month movement guarantee. These are terms printed in that handbook, not verified current terms for every sale or region, so check the applicable policy before purchasing.
Prices and the Aeolian refresh
Fratello’s January 2025 article on the Aeolian refresh reported these euro prices at publication. They are dated editorial figures, not current quotations or confirmation that each option remains available. The article’s figures distinguish the Automatic and GMT on canvas, leather and steel bracelet, and also include a bronze COSC variant:
