Not yet. Eye-tracked autofocus glasses are a promising way to address presbyopia, but the evidence so far does not show that they can make bifocals obsolete. The 2019 “Autofocals” prototype performed well in small studies; the eye-tracking glasses IXI describes are still in development. A separate autofocus product, ViXion01S, is available, but it senses target distance rather than tracking the wearer’s gaze.
Why glasses need different focus for near and far
Presbyopia is the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to refocus at near distances as the crystalline lens stiffens. Readers provide a fixed near prescription; bifocals and progressive lenses build different focus zones into a lens. These approaches work without electronics, but wearers may need to look through the appropriate part of the lens or adjust their head position.
Autofocus systems take a different approach: they use tunable optics that change focus. Depending on the design, sensors may track the wearer’s eyes, estimate how far away an object is, or allow manual adjustment. “Autofocus glasses” is therefore a broad label, not a guarantee that a product uses eye tracking.
How eye-tracking autofocus glasses focus
A gaze-contingent system detects where the wearer is looking and changes the lens focus to suit the target. The 2019 Autofocals research prototype combined eye tracking with a depth camera. IXI says its development-stage frames contain sensors that track eye movements, but it has not yet made the product available to buy.

That differs from distance-sensing autofocus: a device can estimate target distance and adjust its optics without determining the wearer’s gaze. ViXion01S is an example of this latter approach, not an eye-tracking product.
What the Autofocals study found—and what it did not
Padmanaban, Konrad and Wetzstein’s 2019 Science Advances paper evaluated a research prototype, not a finished consumer product. In one study, 19 users were assessed for visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and refocusing. Under the study conditions, the authors reported better acuity than with monovision and progressive lenses, similar contrast sensitivity, and faster, significantly more accurate performance than progressives on a refocusing task. In a separate study, 23 of 37 users ranked the prototype best for ease of refocusing.

These results are encouraging, but the sample sizes were small and the hardware was a research rig. They do not establish how a commercial system would perform across everyday activities, prescriptions or wearers, or show that all autofocus products outperform bifocals or progressives. The study evaluated a prototype, not ViXion01S or IXI’s unfinished product. Read the study summary and prototype details.

IXI: eye tracking, still in development
IXI’s current product page describes frame-integrated eye-movement tracking, but says the eyewear is still in development, is not available for purchase and is not yet CE marked. ViXion01S: a released device, but not gaze tracking
ViXion announced general sales of ViXion01S from 2025-06-05 and named Amazon among its sales channels. Its manufacturer describes a distance-sensing system and says it is intended for stationary or specific tasks. The official online shop listing states that it delivers only within Japan, so an Amazon sales announcement should not be read as proof of delivery or availability in every country.
ViXion reports a focal range of 5 cm to infinity and about 15 hours of continuous operation; runtime depends on conditions and use. Its official list price was ¥88,000 on the manufacturer and shop pages checked on 2026-10-04, but prices and availability can change. See ViXion01S product information and the official shop listing.

ViXion says the device is not a medical device and warns against driving or cycling while wearing it. The company describes customization of the outer lenses; that does not establish that the autofocus device replaces a clinical prescription. Its store also lists ViXion2, but availability outside the official Japanese store was not established in the cited product information. Read ViXion’s general-sales announcement.
Laclarée: project-reported development
A European Commission CORDIS report describes Laclarée’s I-SEE project as developing an optician-led offering, with trial mounts and work on reliability and CE marking. Laclarée reported 40 patients in an exploratory clinical study and about 400 prototype try-ons. These are project-reported development figures, not a large randomized clinical trial or confirmation of completed certification and retail availability. The report describes a planned France-first route and nearby countries, not an established broad retail launch. Read the I-SEE project reporting.

What to consider before treating autofocus as a replacement
A focus mechanism alone does not show whether a device will suit your everyday needs. Before considering an autofocus system as an alternative to your current correction, look for clear information on:

- Prescription fit: whether the product supports your prescription and whether its adjustable optics are intended to replace, supplement or work alongside prescription lenses.
- Field of view and transitions: how quickly focus changes, whether switching is comfortable, and what happens when you shift your gaze between near and far objects.
- Wearability: frame size, weight, battery runtime and whether the device is practical for the activities you want it for.
- Trial and support: whether you can try it through an optician or return it if the fit or focus behavior does not work for you.
- Availability and safety: regulatory status, delivery region and any manufacturer restrictions on activities.
