The 1 mm thickness difference between these two 39 mm listings is a useful reminder to compare the chosen configuration, not just the model name. A 42 mm lug-to-lug measurement is also worth checking against a watch that already fits you well: case diameter alone does not describe how a watch spans the wrist.
Automatic or meca-quartz: which makes more sense?
Choose the VH31 meca-quartz if you want simpler upkeep
The listed quartz configuration uses a Seiko VH31 meca-quartz movement with a sweeping seconds hand. It is battery-powered, so it does not need to be worn or wound to keep running. Dan Henry’s general FAQ says batteries last two to four years depending on climate and use; that is brand guidance, not a lifespan test of an individual 1975. Choose the Miyota 9015 automatic if you prefer a mechanical movement
The automatic listing names a Miyota 9015, with 28,800 VPH, 24 jewels and a stated 42-hour power reserve. An automatic watch draws its running energy from motion rather than a battery, so it will stop if left unworn long enough to run down; the listed reserve indicates the maker’s stated running time after it is fully wound. Choose this version for the mechanical ownership experience, not because the available specifications establish that it is more accurate or durable.
What the 150 m water-resistance rating does—and does not—tell you
Dan Henry specifies 150 m, 15 ATM or 500 ft water resistance for the 1975. Monochrome Watches also reported a 150 m rating in its earlier coverage. Treat this as the published specification for the model, not proof that an individual watch remains watertight today or a blanket promise for every activity.

Water resistance depends on the condition of the particular watch. Damage, wear, prior service or modifications can affect its seals; the cited product information does not establish the condition of any used example or report an independent water test. For a used watch, ask about service and pressure testing before relying on it in water. Dan Henry’s FAQ discusses 20 ATM for the 1970 Automatic Diver and says most models are 5 ATM, but neither statement replaces the 1975’s own product specification.
Straps, bracelet and fit details
The listed 39 mm configuration has 20 mm lugs and is supplied with an FKM strap; Dan Henry also describes an optional stainless-steel bracelet. If you are shopping for a replacement, 20 mm is the relevant stated strap width, but confirm the attachment style and compatibility with your exact variant before buying. A nominally correct width does not by itself establish that a strap will fit the case.
