Yes. Dexcom G7’s Direct to Watch feature sends glucose readings from the sensor to a compatible Apple Watch over Bluetooth, so the watch can display readings when the iPhone is not nearby. The iPhone is still required to pair a new sensor and to start or stop a Direct to Watch session, but an Apple Watch cellular plan is not required for the sensor-to-watch connection.
What Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch changes
In the normal smartwatch arrangement, the Apple Watch mirrors data relayed by the iPhone; the G7 sensor itself is not communicating with the watch. Direct to Watch changes that path: the G7 sensor communicates with the Apple Watch over Bluetooth while also sending data to the iPhone.
This is a display and connectivity feature, not a replacement for the phone during every part of G7 use. Dexcom’s phone app performs the initial compatibility check, pairs a new sensor and controls starting or stopping the session.
Compatible Apple Watch, iPhone and app versions
Dexcom’s documented minimum setup requires all of the following:

Do you need Apple Watch cellular service?
No cellular plan is needed for the Bluetooth link between a G7 sensor and Apple Watch. A GPS-only watch can receive and display readings through Direct to Watch.

GPS-only Apple Watch
Dexcom documents a limitation for GPS-only models: they can display readings, but they do not upload data to Dexcom Clarity under the documented behavior.
Cellular-and-GPS Apple Watch
A cellular-and-GPS model supports Dexcom Clarity upload under Dexcom’s documented behavior. Cellular service therefore affects data upload and broader connectivity, not whether the sensor can send readings to the watch over Bluetooth.

How to connect a G7 sensor to Apple Watch
- Keep the compatible iPhone and Apple Watch together for initial setup.
- Open the Dexcom G7 app on the iPhone.
- Go to Connections > Direct to Watch.
- Allow the app to run its compatibility check and follow the onboarding prompts.
- Keep Apple Watch notifications enabled and leave iPhone alert mirroring enabled so alerts can appear as configured.
- Use the iPhone app to start or stop the Direct to Watch session. The iPhone remains necessary when pairing a new sensor.
What happens when the iPhone is left at home?
Once Direct to Watch is active and the sensor-to-watch Bluetooth link is working, the watch can show G7 readings without the iPhone nearby. This is the use case Dexcom designed the feature for: viewing real-time glucose information on the wrist while away from the phone.
If the direct sensor link is lost, an orange phone icon indicates that the watch may be copying readings from the iPhone instead. In that state, bring the iPhone nearby to restore the phone-dependent data path. The iPhone is also needed for a new-sensor pairing and for session controls, even when the watch is normally receiving readings directly.

Direct to Watch versus standard smartwatch mode
| Mode | Where the reading travels | Can the iPhone be away? | Clarity behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard smartwatch mode | G7 sensor to iPhone, then iPhone to Apple Watch | No; the watch depends on the phone relay | Uses the phone’s normal data path |
| Direct to Watch | G7 sensor to Apple Watch over Bluetooth, while also sending data to the iPhone | Yes for watch display after setup, provided the direct link remains active | GPS-only and cellular-and-GPS models differ; Dexcom documents Clarity upload for cellular-and-GPS models |
Where the feature is available
DexCom, Inc. announced Direct to Apple Watch availability on June 5, 2024, for the United States, United Kingdom and Ireland, with additional markets planned later that month. Availability is not universal by default, so confirm support for your country in Dexcom’s current compatibility information before purchasing hardware or changing settings.
Checks to make before buying a watch
- Confirm that the exact watch family is supported and can run watchOS 10 or later.
- Verify that your iPhone runs iOS 17 or later and that the Dexcom G7 app meets the current version requirement.
- Check regional Direct to Watch availability; a supported watch does not by itself guarantee service in every market.
- Choose GPS-only or cellular-and-GPS based on whether Dexcom Clarity upload from the watch matters to you; neither choice changes the basic Bluetooth sensor-to-watch link.
- For a new sensor, plan to have the compatible iPhone available for pairing and session control.
What this feature does—and does not—establish
Direct to Watch addresses how G7 readings reach the wrist. The official material describing the feature does not provide an independent clinical-effectiveness statistic or a percentage improvement in user outcomes. It should therefore be evaluated as a convenience and connectivity option, not as evidence that the CGM changes treatment results by itself.
