The “DJI Osmo Action 6 leak” is now historical: DJI released the camera after its November 18, 2025 launch event. The headline proved broadly right about a more ambitious action camera, including a square sensor, variable aperture, 8K recording and sports-data tools. The smartwatch claim needs tighter wording, however. DJI officially documents importing workout data into DJI Mimo’s video dashboards; it does not establish universal smartwatch control of the camera.
As of August 2026, treat the Action 6 as a released product and the watch story as a distinction between camera control, fitness-data import and telemetry overlays.
What the 2025 leak actually claimed
Contemporary reporting showed images that appeared to depict the Action 6 alongside a generic smartwatch. The speculation included starting and stopping recording from a watch, changing camera modes and adding richer athlete data such as speed, heart rate, distance, power, cadence, pace and dive information. The report also noted that the Action 5 Pro already supported some Garmin and Apple Watch sports-data overlays. See the original report at TechRadar.
Those are three different functions:
- Direct remote control: the watch sends commands to the camera.
- Workout-data import: DJI Mimo reads a completed activity from a watch or cycling computer.
- Telemetry overlay: the imported data is rendered on the finished video, usually after recording.
A photograph suggesting pairing cannot prove a universal watch-control protocol. DJI’s current Action 6 documentation confirms the latter two workflows, not “start recording from any smartwatch.”

What DJI released
DJI’s official product page and support materials document a substantial hardware update. The main specifications are:
| Feature | Osmo Action 6 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor | 1/1.1-inch square CMOS | More flexible horizontal and vertical cropping; usable benefit depends on lens coverage and final aspect ratio. |
| Aperture | Variable f/2.0–f/4.0 | f/2.0 admits more light; narrower settings help manage bright scenes. |
| Maximum video | 8K/30fps | Extra reframing and stabilization headroom, at a much higher storage and editing cost. |
| Internal storage | 50GB | An emergency buffer when a card is full or unavailable; it is not a substitute for a fast microSD card. |
| Waterproofing | 20 meters without a case | Useful for swimming, rain and many dive scenarios; verify conditions and accessory limits before deeper use. |
| Battery claim | Up to four hours | DJI’s controlled claim, not an expected 8K or cold-weather runtime. |
Specifications and current feature descriptions are listed by DJI at dji.com/osmo-action-6.
Variable aperture
The f/2.0–f/4.0 lens is DJI’s first variable-aperture action-camera design. A wide f/2.0 setting can help exposure in dim conditions, while f/4.0 reduces incoming light in bright scenes. Aperture alone does not guarantee cleaner footage: shutter speed, stabilization, noise reduction, focus range and processing still determine the result. DJI also notes that available aperture settings depend on shooting mode and accessories in its FAQ.
Square sensor and 4K Custom
The Action 6 replaces the Action 5 Pro’s 1/1.3-inch sensor with a 1/1.1-inch square sensor, according to DJI’s comparison material. A square capture area can make one recording more adaptable to landscape and portrait delivery. DJI’s 4K Custom mode adds further framing flexibility in post-production. The advantage is not simply “a bigger sensor”: crop area, lens coverage and the final aspect ratio determine how much image you retain.

8K recording
Independent testing reports a maximum of 8K at 30 frames per second, versus the Action 5 Pro’s 4K ceiling. Eight-k footage is most useful when you expect to crop, reframe, stabilize or extract stills. It also creates larger files, demands faster storage and requires more capable editing hardware.
DJI currently supports downloading and editing 8K footage in DJI Mimo only on iPhone 15 Pro models and later; broader device support depends on future app updates. The limitation is documented on the Action 6 support page. An unsupported phone does not make the camera unusable, but you may need a computer or another compatible workflow.
Storage, battery and body
The 50GB internal memory is slightly above the approximately 47GB measured in independent testing for the Action 5 Pro. Tom’s Guide also reports microSD support up to 1TB, but 8K recording still makes a high-capacity, fast card and regular backups essential.
DJI advertises up to four hours of battery life and cold-resistant operation. Tom’s Guide identifies a 1,950mAh battery and says DJI’s 240-minute figure is based on 1080p recording. Bright screens, high frame rates, stabilization, wireless use and low temperatures can reduce runtime substantially.

- Independent testing found stabilization broadly comparable with the Action 5 Pro, so do not assume every new feature represents a stabilization breakthrough.
The smartwatch reality
| Claim | Current status |
|---|---|
| The camera pairs with a smartwatch | Partly supported only in the broad sense of compatible data workflows; the exact device and function matter. |
| Apple Watch data can appear in video | Confirmed through Apple Health and DJI Mimo. |
| Garmin data can appear in video | Confirmed. |
| Magene, iGPSPORT, Suunto and COROS data can appear | Supported by DJI Mimo, subject to app version, device and region. |
| Any watch can start and stop recording | Not established by DJI’s Action 6 documentation. |
| Real-time native watch telemetry | Do not claim it without a current DJI source for the specific watch and region. |
| Post-production dashboard overlays | Confirmed. |
DJI’s Mimo app and support instructions describe importing Apple Health, Garmin, Magene, iGPSPORT, Suunto, COROS, compatible regional services and third-party FIT files. DJI separately documents Apple Watch remote control for certain Osmo Mobile gimbals, not as a confirmed Action 6 feature: support article.
How to add sports data to Action 6 footage
- Set the camera and watch or cycling computer to the same date, time and time zone.
- Record the activity and video, then sync the workout to Apple Health, Garmin Connect, Suunto, COROS or the relevant companion service.
- Connect the Action 6 to DJI Mimo using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Open the clip in the DJI Mimo album.
- Tap Dashboard, then Data Import.
- Choose the data source or a compatible FIT file.
- Select the channels to display, such as speed, heart rate, cadence, pace, power or dive information.
- Apply the dashboard and export the video.
DJI’s detailed path is documented at DJI Support. This is primarily a phone-based, post-recording workflow rather than proof that the watch operated the camera during filming.
If the overlay is out of sync
- Sync the watch with its companion app before reopening DJI Mimo.
- Check the phone’s date, time and time zone.
- Check the Action 6 clock and the workout record’s timestamps.
- Reconnect the camera and retry Dashboard → Data Import.
- Confirm account authorization, regional availability and that the chosen data channel exists for the device.
Action 6 versus Action 5 Pro
| Priority | Action 6 | Action 5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Up to 8K/30fps | 4K ceiling |
| Imaging control | 1/1.1-inch square sensor and f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture | 1/1.3-inch sensor; no Action 6 variable-aperture system |
| Internal storage | 50GB | Approximately 47GB in independent testing |
| Sports workflow | DJI Mimo dashboards with supported services and FIT files | Some sports-data overlays already existed |
| New creative tools | 4K Custom, Subject Tracking, Portrait, 4K Live Photo and newer lens options | Fewer Action 6-specific modes |
| Stabilization and durability | 4K HorizonSteady, 20m waterproofing | Many core characteristics remain similar |
Choose the Action 5 Pro when you mainly shoot 4K, already own its batteries and mounts, or find a substantial price difference. Choose the Action 6 when 8K reframing, variable aperture, internal storage, tracking or the newer lens ecosystem solves a specific problem.

Who should buy the Action 6?
- Buy it for 8K reframing: especially when one clip must serve landscape, portrait and cropped social formats.
- Buy it for mixed lighting: the variable aperture offers control, though it is not a guarantee of superior low-light footage.
- Buy it for athlete dashboards: useful if your watch or cycling computer is supported and you accept the phone-based import step.
- Buy it for vlogging: Portrait mode, tracking, gesture control and direct OsmoAudio connections are meaningful additions.
- Keep the Action 5 Pro: if 4K is sufficient, your current accessories work well and the new modes would not change your workflow.
Buying and compatibility checks
DJI’s official pages are available globally, but retail, warranty, DJI Care and after-sales support vary by market. DJI’s store comparison has shown the Action 6 from approximately US$449, while Tom’s Guide reported launch bundles at US$369 for the Essential Combo and US$379 for the Standard Combo. Those figures differ by region, bundle and channel; check the checkout page for your country rather than treating either as a universal current price.
DJI’s comparison page has shown the Action 5 Pro from approximately US$319 and the Action 4 from approximately US$239, also subject to regional pricing: DJI comparison. The Action 6 buying page is DJI Store.
Before buying, verify:
- DJI Mimo compatibility: iOS 15.0 or later, or Android 9.0 or later, on the downloads page.
- Whether your phone can download and edit 8K in Mimo.
- Whether your watch, cycling computer or FIT-file workflow is supported in your region.
- Warranty, DJI Care eligibility and seller legitimacy, particularly in the United States, where independent reporting has described changing official-sales and support conditions.
- Accessory compatibility before assuming Action 5 Pro batteries or mounts transfer; confirm against DJI’s current list.
Verdict
The leak got the direction right but the shorthand wrong. DJI delivered a substantially upgraded camera with a square 1/1.1-inch sensor, variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture, 8K/30fps, 50GB storage and new creative modes. The confirmed smartwatch story is narrower: DJI Mimo imports compatible workout data and applies it to recorded video. Unless DJI explicitly lists remote control for your exact watch and region, do not buy the Action 6 expecting universal start/stop recording from a smartwatch.
