Erika’s Originals grew from a handmade Marine Nationale-style elastic watch strap into a customizable strap business. The maker dates its first MN straps to 2016; it also says a vintage-webbing strap made a trip to the International Space Station in 2018. That spaceflight account comes from the brand, not independent mission documentation established here.
What does MN mean on Erika’s Originals straps?
MN stands for Marine Nationale, French for “Navy.” A UK watch retailer describes the style’s history as sailors using elastic parachute braid and hardware to make watch straps. The result is an elastic textile strap associated with the Marine Nationale style. The available sources do not establish a detailed, sourced comparison between MN straps and NATO straps, so it is better not to assume they are interchangeable or make broad claims about their differences.
How Erika’s Originals began
The retailer says Erika made her first strap for her husband, a collector of vintage DOXA watches, using elastic from a period parachute. After he wore it and it appeared on Instagram, requests followed and the business developed. This origin account comes from the retailer, not a separate official history from the French Navy.

The company’s product pages also assert worldwide patent status. The legal scope of that claim has not been established here; it should be understood as a maker claim, not an independently verified account of patent coverage.
Did an Erika’s Originals strap really go to space?
Erika’s Originals says a strap made from vintage webbing launched toward the International Space Station on April 2, 2018, attached to a watch belonging to the maker’s friend Dave Sutton. The brand says Sutton returned the strap to Erika after it came back to Earth aboard Soyuz. Its anniversary page says the strap spent “no less than three months” aboard the ISS, but gives April 4, 2018, as the flight date. Those official brand pages conflict on the launch date.

The account is a distinctive part of the strap’s story, but it remains the maker’s account: independent mission documentation was not established here. The reported duration is likewise a brand statement, not an independently measured figure. Read the vintage strap page and the anniversary page.
What to know before choosing a vintage strap
The vintage version uses old-stock Marine Nationale elastic webbing, which the maker says is generally sourced from decommissioned parachutes. Erika’s Originals describes that material as 40 to 60 years old and cautions that it is less durable than its regular straps. For a purchase decision, distinguish the material’s age from the story attached to it: a vintage strap may have historical character, but the maker itself flags a durability trade-off. Consider the following before ordering:
- Material: Decide whether vintage webbing or regular material better suits how often you plan to wear the strap.
- Fit: Measure your wrist and check strap width; the maker says some watch-and-wrist combinations may need a conversation before ordering.
- Configuration: Confirm the chosen color, centerline, stitching, slider, buckle, print or engraving options for the specific product.
- Returns and warranty: The official site states a 12-month warranty for ordinary products and three months for vintage or repurposed materials. Its terms describe a 14-day return window for standard off-the-shelf goods, exclude custom or personalized products, and say a mounted strap cannot be returned. How to size an Erika’s Originals strap
The maker says wrist measurement informs strap length and estimates approximately 30 mm (about 1 inch) or more of adjustment. - Measure your wrist. Use a flexible measuring tape, or wrap a strip of paper around your wrist and mark where it meets. Measure the paper against a ruler; a tape is convenient but not essential.
- Check the watch and strap details. Confirm the strap width and consider the watch’s lug-to-lug size, particularly if the maker’s sizing guidance suggests it matters for your combination.
- Allow for how you will wear it. If the strap needs to go over a dive dry suit, contact the maker before placing the order.
- Ask about an uncertain fit before ordering. The maker specifically advises contacting it for some wrist-and-watch combinations rather than assuming the general adjustment range will suit every setup.
