What the Dark Rhodium 116622 is
The 116622 is a 40 mm Yacht-Master in Rolesium: its case combines Oystersteel and platinum, and its Oyster bracelet is steel. The Dark Rhodium dial keeps the palette largely grey, while the seconds hand and dial text add blue. The reference also appeared with other dial configurations; the cited sources do not establish how those variants compare in current market demand or value.
Its bidirectional bezel is platinum and graduated for 60 minutes. Rolex describes using it to read time intervals, such as elapsed sailing time between buoys. That makes it a timing feature, not evidence that the Yacht-Master is a dedicated dive watch. Rolex’s Yacht-Master overview presents the collection in its sailing context.
How it looks and wears, according to the 2016 review
Felix Scholz, writing for Time+Tide on 23 November 2016, found the bezel’s predominantly sand-blasted finish less conspicuous than a ceramic bezel. He also described the grey dial and blue details as a restrained combination enlivened by a small accent. As he put it, “This bright slash of colour adds energy to the Yacht-Master, once again proving Rolex’s mastery of the minuscule.” These are Scholz’s impressions, not findings from a new physical examination.

The contrast is the central design idea: platinum brings a precious-metal element to the bezel, while the grey dial and steel bracelet keep the overall effect quieter than a high-contrast, brightly coloured sports watch. Whether that balance appeals is personal; the source material does not establish an objective ranking against other dial variants.

Scholz described the then-applied Superlative Chronometer standard as guaranteeing −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. That is a historical certification formulation, not a measured accuracy result for every surviving 116622. Rolex’s current certification overview explains the present protocol; its current precision claim is in the order of −2/+2 seconds per day.

How the 116622 differs from the current Yacht-Master 40
Do not transfer current-model specifications to the 116622. Rolex identifies calibre 3235 in the current Yacht-Master 40, while the 116622 reviewed by Scholz uses calibre 3135. Rolex gives the 3235 approximately 70 hours of power reserve; that figure does not apply to the older watch.

When comparing listings, confirm the reference rather than relying on the model name alone. Movement generation, condition, service history, provenance and the exact watch on offer all matter; the specifications of a newer reference do not make an older listing equivalent.

Is the Dark Rhodium 116622 worth buying?
It may suit a buyer seeking a 40 mm steel-and-platinum sports watch with a restrained grey dial, a distinctive platinum timing bezel and the older calibre 3135 generation. Scholz’s review is useful for understanding the design intent, but it is a dated subjective review rather than a current condition assessment or value appraisal.
Price evidence here is limited to two different points in time and market contexts. Time+Tide reported Australian pricing of $14,600 in 2016. A REEDS Jewelers page accessed in 2026 displayed $21,500 for one 2017 certified-pre-owned example. Neither establishes today’s fair market value, a general resale range or a price forecast.

What to check before buying a pre-owned example
- Confirm the exact reference and dial. Check that the listing is for the 116622 and specifically the Dark Rhodium dial, rather than another Yacht-Master 40 generation or dial configuration.
- Assess the individual watch. Ask for clear photographs and documentation, and establish its condition, provenance and service history. Listing specifications do not establish the condition of a particular specimen.
- Verify water resistance if it matters to you. A 100 m rating is a specification reported for the reference, not proof that an aged watch remains sealed. The available sources include no inspection or pressure-test result for any individual watch, so do not infer present swimming suitability from the rating alone.
- Compare like with like. Account for reference, movement generation, condition, service history and included documentation. The cited 2016 Australian price and one later US retailer asking price are not comparable market benchmarks.
One documented route is REEDS Jewelers’ listing for a 2017 Dark Rhodium 116622 in its Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program. The page says the CPO card confirms authenticity on the purchase date and that the watch is guaranteed to function properly for two years.
