Certina is a Swiss Made watch brand founded in Grenchen in 1888. Its defining idea is DS, or “Double Security,” a case-and-sealing approach that Certina dates to 1959. Today’s catalog ranges from quartz and automatic everyday watches to ISO-listed dive watches and the 2,000-metre-rated DS SUPER PH2000M. To choose sensibly, start with intended use, then verify the exact reference’s movement, dimensions, water-resistance rating, materials and certification.
What is Certina?
Certina says it began in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, and has built its identity around Swiss Made watchmaking, reliability and durability. The company’s history presents DS as the foundation of that durability-focused positioning rather than as a single model or collection.
Certina’s current catalog is organized into DS Action, DS PH, DS-X, DS-8, DS-7, DS-2, DS-1, DS and DS Jubile families. The catalog is a changing regional snapshot: model availability, variants and prices can change, so an individual watch page is more authoritative than a collection title.
What does DS mean on a Certina watch?
DS stands for Double Security. Certina dates the DS Concept to 1959 and describes it as a way to improve shock and water resistance. In Certina’s words, “The Double Security concept has been synonymous with maximum durability since 1959.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning statement, not an independent test conclusion.

Classic DS construction
Certina describes classic DS construction as a combination of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, a reinforced caseback and a sophisticated sealing system. These elements are intended to help protect the movement from impacts and water ingress.
DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance
Certina says a new DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance generation arrived in 2025. Its described design elements are:
- Reinforced and, on some models, slightly domed sapphire crystal
- An additional O-ring at the stem
- A thin plate that stabilizes the dial
- A ring-shaped nut that secures the movement
- A reinforced caseback
Certina says these refinements protect the movement and improve resistance to impacts and vibration. The company also states that specially developed shock-testing equipment reached its load limit; it does not publish a numeric G-force result in the cited material. Not every watch necessarily receives all five elements: Certina says the specification can vary with a model’s style, size and requirements.

How the current Certina collections differ
DS Action: sport and maritime emphasis
DS Action is Certina’s sport- and maritime-oriented family. The live collection includes both quartz and automatic watches, multiple case sizes and different water-resistance groupings. Some individual models are identified as divers’ watches under ISO 6425:2018.
Do not infer a whole collection’s rating from its name. Check the exact reference for movement, diameter, water resistance and whether the watch carries the ISO 6425:2018 diver classification.
DS PH: vintage maritime character
Certina describes DS PH as a vintage maritime line that follows robust watches from the 1960s. Current models vary in movement, case material, stated water resistance, strap and quick-release configuration. The family includes the DS SUPER PH2000M.

DS-X, DS-8, DS-7, DS-2, DS-1, DS and DS Jubile
These names represent additional design and use categories in the current catalog, but a collection label alone does not establish a particular watch’s size, movement, depth rating or certification. Use the individual product sheet to confirm those details before comparing or buying.
Key current models and what they illustrate
| Model or example | What Certina’s material establishes | What to verify on the exact reference |
|---|---|---|
| DS Action Diver 38mm Titanium | Automatic, titanium, 38 mm diver-style example in the current catalog | Reference number, precise water-resistance rating, ISO classification, movement specification and supplied strap |
| DS SUPER PH2000M | Certina’s press material dated 17 June 2026 describes the brand’s first PH timepiece engineered for depths up to 2,000 m; Grade 2 titanium case, ceramic bezel, Powermatic 80 movement and Nivachron balance spring are specified | Exact variant, crown and operating instructions, included strap and regional availability |
| Other DS Action models | Collection includes quartz and automatic watches in several sizes and water-resistance groupings | Movement, diameter, thickness, rating and whether ISO 6425:2018 applies |
| Other DS PH models | Automatic models with differing materials, water-resistance classes, straps and quick-release options | Reference-specific dimensions, rating and strap compatibility |
The 2,000 m figure for the DS SUPER PH2000M is Certina’s stated specification. It should not be treated as independent verification or as a recommendation to use the watch at that depth; ordinary swimming and diving decisions require following the watch’s instructions and appropriate safety practice.

1. Match the watch to its use
- Everyday or dress: look through the less tool-focused DS families and prioritize dimensions, dial legibility and strap comfort.
- Sport and travel: DS Action offers the broadest sport-oriented spread of sizes, movements and ratings, but the individual specification still controls.
- Diving-oriented use: examine DS Action diver models or DS PH references and distinguish a stated depth/pressure rating from an ISO 6425:2018 classification.
2. Choose quartz or automatic deliberately
Certina’s current catalog contains both. Quartz and automatic are different operating approaches, not a universal quality ranking. Confirm the movement named on the product page; collection names do not guarantee one type.
3. Check size and fit
Compare the exact case diameter and other dimensions rather than relying on “small,” “medium” or “large” catalog filters. The DS Action Diver 38mm Titanium is a useful smaller-case example, while other references occupy different sizes. Trying the watch on is the most reliable way to judge lug reach, thickness and weight for your wrist.
4. Separate water resistance from diver certification
A depth or pressure rating is not the same statement as ISO 6425:2018 diver classification. Certina’s DS Action listings show both kinds of information on different models. Treat each as reference-specific and read the operating and maintenance instructions.

5. Decide between steel and titanium
Current examples use stainless steel and titanium. Certina specifies Grade 2 titanium for the DS SUPER PH2000M, and labels the DS Action Diver 38mm example as titanium. Titanium can suit buyers seeking lower weight, while steel offers a different feel and appearance; the evidence here does not establish a universal preference.
6. Verify strap details
Certina lists rubber, textile or fabric, titanium and other strap types, with quick-release options on some DS PH models. A replacement strap must match the precise reference’s width, attachment system and intended use. A collection page is not enough to confirm compatibility.
7. Treat prices as regional snapshots
Certina’s official catalog displays prices in selected currencies, including CHF, but those figures can change by region, date, taxes and availability. Do not convert a catalog snapshot into a universal current street price; check the official listing for your market.

- Write down the primary use: everyday, dress, sport, travel or diving-oriented.
- Filter the catalog by collection, then open each candidate’s individual reference page.
- Record movement type, case diameter and other dimensions, water-resistance statement and any ISO 6425:2018 designation.
- Check case and bezel material, crystal, supplied strap and quick-release or attachment details.
- Compare weight and fit in person when possible, especially between steel and titanium references.
- Confirm the regional price, stock status and exact reference before ordering.
What Certina’s catalog does—and does not—tell you
Certina’s material supports a clear picture of a durability-led Swiss brand whose DS concept has been central since 1959. It does not support claims that every model has the newest Extreme Shock Resistance construction, that one movement type is inherently better, or that a collection name guarantees a particular rating or size. Independent comparative testing, owner experience and universal strap compatibility are not established here, so those should not be inferred from the manufacturer’s specifications.
