Casio built its watch business on practical digital innovation, then turned G-SHOCK into a globally recognized line by combining rugged engineering with wider formats, fashion appeal and international marketing. The available figures show G-SHOCK’s scale within Casio, but do not establish that Casio is the world’s biggest watch brand overall.
Casio was making digital watches before G-SHOCK
Casio’s watch story began before its best-known line. The company dates the release of its first digital wristwatch, the Casiotron, to 1974. Its later history describes the Casiotron X-1 as a multifunction digital watch and notes that the resin construction of the F-100 helped set the stage for G-SHOCK. Casio’s company history traces those early steps.
That background matters: G-SHOCK did not appear in a company new to watches. Casio already had experience building digital timepieces and experimenting with materials and functions.
A durability challenge became G-SHOCK
In 1981, Casio began what it called the Team Tough project: an effort to make a watch that would not break when dropped. The company’s official G-SHOCK history says the team produced more than 200 prototypes over about two years before arriving at a shock-resistant design. The first G-SHOCK, the DW-5000C, launched in 1983. Casio describes the idea as a challenge to conventional assumptions about what a watch could withstand. Casio’s G-SHOCK history gives the company’s account of the development.

The original proposition was concrete: toughness was not an accessory to the watch, but its defining feature. That gave G-SHOCK a distinctive identity that could carry across later models and audiences.
Casio expanded the format and audience
G-SHOCK developed beyond its first design. Casio dates the first DW-5600 series model to 1987 and its first analog G-SHOCK to 1989. In 1994, it introduced BABY-G, a shock-resistant watch series for women. These changes broadened the line’s formats and audience without abandoning the toughness at its center. Casio’s official G-SHOCK history records the model milestones, while its company history documents the wider brand timeline.

Overseas popularity helped turn it into a cultural product
Casio says G-SHOCK first gained popularity outside Japan, was then re-imported and became popular in its home market, and eventually sold so well that supply struggled to keep up. Its account of the 1990s identifies the decade as the first major turning point: G-SHOCK became a fashion item and brand recognition spread. Casio’s G-SHOCK history describes the overseas-to-Japan cycle; its 2020 corporate report characterizes the fashion shift and expanding recognition.

This is Casio’s explanation of the brand’s rise, not an independent measurement of how each factor contributed. Still, it shows how the company understood the transition: a product first distinguished by function acquired style relevance and a broader audience.
Later growth came from more than the original digital design
Casio describes another turning point in the 2010s, driven by analog development and global marketing. From 2018 onward, it points to metal and smartwatch development, alongside growth in emerging countries. The strategy was to extend G-SHOCK’s appeal through different forms and markets rather than rely only on the original digital format. Casio’s 2020 report lays out this company-reported account of the line’s successive phases.

Casio’s 2011 company history says cumulative G-SHOCK sales reached 50 million watches in 2009. In its 2020 report, Casio said G-SHOCK represented roughly 60% of its Timepiece Business for the fiscal year ended March 2020 and described shipments at around 10 million watches annually at that time. These are company-reported figures with different measures and dates; the 2020 shipment estimate should not be read as a current annual rate. The company history records the 2009 cumulative milestone, and the 2020 corporate report gives the business share and approximate shipments.

Those numbers establish a major product line within Casio’s own watch business. They do not establish Casio’s rank against every watch brand worldwide. A 2007 Casio report claimed the company had the largest global share in radio-controlled timepieces, based on a Casio survey. That is a narrower category claim from an older company source, not proof that Casio was the biggest watch brand overall. Casio’s corporate reports archive contains its reporting; no comparable all-brand ranking is established by the cited figures.
Why “the world’s biggest watch brand” needs qualification
Casio’s rise is best understood as the building of a significant global watch business, with G-SHOCK as an unusually durable and culturally visible pillar. The evidence supports G-SHOCK’s substantial scale and Casio’s account of how it grew; it does not support a definitive global ranking by revenue, unit sales or market share across all watch brands.
Casio’s 2025 Integrated Report, covering the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, is the newest report listed in the company’s archive and includes a Timepiece Business Strategy section. The cited material does not provide a current G-SHOCK shipment figure, so the historical 2020 estimate cannot be used to claim a present-day ranking. Casio’s reports archive provides the reporting context.
