What is the Heritage Tropic-Proof Handwinding?
Alpina presents the watch as a re-release of its historic 1965 Tropic-Proof design. The company’s account places the original in an era when transatlantic flying was becoming routine and describes the design as an adventurer’s watch intended to cope with different climates. That is Alpina’s framing of the watch’s history, rather than an independent performance claim. Fratello covered the reissue on April 4, 2025, identifying the model and its references and discussing it in relation to its predecessor.
The new release is offered in two dial colors:
- Black: reference AL-480B2H6.
- White: reference AL-480S2H6.

The case and strap details are from Alpina’s US descriptions, while the caliber, reserve and 3 ATM figure come from its international page. Product-page specifications are not identical across those regions.
Is it hand-wound or automatic?
Alpina’s international page calls the AL-480 hand-wound and gives it a 42-hour reserve. The US black-dial listing is internally inconsistent: its highlights call the movement “Automatic,” while its functions field says “Handwound.” The published descriptions therefore do not agree. The international specification supports describing it as hand-wound, but buyers should verify the movement details with Alpina for their market rather than treating the conflicting US label as settled.

How much does it cost?
As displayed on Alpina’s official product pages accessed October 4, 2026, the US black- and white-dial listings each show a price of $1,995. The international page displays €1,795.95. These are separate regional prices, not currency-converted equivalents, and listings may change. Check the relevant local Alpina page for current price and availability.
What does 3 ATM water resistance mean here?
Alpina’s international listing states 3 ATM, while the reviewed US descriptions use “splash-resistant.” Neither label supports treating this model as a dive watch or assuming it is suitable for swimming. Follow Alpina’s guidance for the market where the watch is sold.

Which dial version should you choose?
The documented distinction is the dial color and reference: black is AL-480B2H6; white is AL-480S2H6. The US black-dial page also states a 17 mm lug width, but the reviewed material does not establish a different lug width or strap option for the white version. If replacement straps matter to your choice, confirm the dimensions and fit for the exact reference before buying one.
