Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch generation is official. Unveiled on July 22, 2026, the Galaxy Watch9 is the slimmer, everyday health smartwatch, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a larger 47mm titanium model built around battery life, outdoor training, bright-screen visibility and diving features. They are two different watches, not one successor in two names.
This first look separates Samsung’s confirmed specifications from claims that still need independent battery, GPS, comfort and health-tracking tests.
Meet Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy Watch lineup
| Model | Role | Sizes | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch9 | Everyday smartwatch and health tracker | 40mm, 44mm | Slimmer design and broad daily-health focus |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | Premium outdoor and endurance smartwatch | 47mm | Titanium case, 800mAh battery, high-brightness display and trail/diving tools |
Samsung’s official announcement is at Galaxy Unpacked July 2026.
Galaxy Watch Ultra2: the rugged first look
Large titanium case, thinner profile
The Ultra2 uses Samsung’s cushion-style construction, integrating the display, bezel and body into a visibly larger 47mm watch. Samsung says the body is 12% thinner than the previous Ultra generation. The shown finishes include Titanium Silver and Titanium Gray, with a Marine Band configuration on Samsung’s U.S. pages. A new air-pocket band structure is claimed to make the band 26% lighter. Those are Samsung measurements and claims, not independent comfort tests; the 47mm case may still feel substantial on smaller wrists.

Product details and current configurations are listed on Samsung’s U.S. Ultra2 page.
800mAh battery and a peak-brightness claim
The Ultra2 has an 800mAh battery, which Samsung says is 35% more capacity than the prior Ultra. Its display is rated at up to 5,000 nits, presented by Samsung as a smartwatch first. “Up to” describes a peak figure, not sustained brightness across the whole panel. Automatic brightness, direct sunlight, watch-face design and power settings will determine what users actually see. Likewise, capacity does not equal a guaranteed number of days: LTE, GPS, always-on display, health sensors and screen brightness can reduce endurance.
Trail, recovery and hydration tools
Ultra2 software adds Trail Run mode with elevation, climbing data, cumulative ascent and descent. Samsung also describes hydration guidance based on estimated sweat loss relative to body weight, alongside workout and recovery guidance. These capabilities are aimed at hikers, trail runners, cyclists, endurance athletes and outdoor travelers rather than buyers who mainly want notifications.
Diving support, with important limits
Samsung says the Ultra2 records depth, dive time and water temperature and carries EN13319 certification for diving instruments, 10ATM water resistance and an IP69K rating. Planned collaboration with Mares adds ascent and descent rates and safety decompression time. Samsung says those advanced Mares features arrive later in 2026 and require a separate app download.

- TRACK YOUR NIGHTS. OWN YOUR DAYS: Galaxy Watch9 gives you personalized recommendations and habit-building guidance with Advanced Sleep Coaching.⁶ Plus, Bedtime Guidance⁷ helps you find your optimal bedtime so you can wake up feeling refreshed.
These specifications do not make the watch an unlimited underwater device or a replacement for certified dive equipment, training or professional safety procedures. Depth, temperature, saltwater exposure, maintenance and software availability still matter.
Galaxy Watch9: the everyday model
40mm and 44mm options
The Watch9 comes in 40mm and 44mm cases, with a slimmer everyday-watch design and the same new air-pocket band approach. Its positioning is all-day and sleep wear, not the Ultra2’s rugged outdoor format. Samsung lists a 390mAh battery for the 40mm model and says that is 20% more capacity than the previous generation. Actual runtime depends on the same LTE, GPS, display, sensor and power-saving variables that affect the Ultra2.
Health guidance rather than raw readings
Samsung’s stated Galaxy Watch9 health ecosystem covers Activity, Mindfulness, Nutrition, Sleep, Vitals, Fitness Index, Daily Cardio Load, personalized workout plans, Heart Health Score and cardiovascular insights. The emphasis is on turning measurements into recommendations and trends instead of simply displaying sensor values.
These are consumer wellness tools unless Samsung specifically identifies a feature as medically authorized for a particular use in a particular market. Availability can vary by country, phone, software version and regulatory approval. Pairing with a Galaxy smartphone unlocks features such as sleep score and personalized sleep coaching, so an Android phone does not necessarily provide an identical experience.

The Snapdragon Wear Elite change
Both watches use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform, Samsung’s first smartwatch generation to move away from its established Exynos wearable platform. Qualcomm describes Wear Elite as an AI-oriented wearable system with on-device NPU processing, sensor fusion, low-power connectivity, Wear OS support and context-aware personal-AI capabilities. Qualcomm’s announcements are at Snapdragon Wear Elite and the July Samsung collaboration.
The confirmed fact is the platform change. Faster processing, better efficiency or more sophisticated sensor interpretation are possible benefits, but no independent testing here establishes superior speed, battery life or health accuracy versus Exynos watches.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy which watch?
Choose Watch9 when
- You want a smaller 40mm or conventional 44mm smartwatch.
- Sleep comfort and all-day wear matter more than ruggedness.
- You want Samsung’s new health and recovery features at a lower starting price.
- You do not need the Ultra2’s 800mAh battery, 5,000-nit claim or diving tools.
Choose Ultra2 when
- You regularly hike, trail-run, cycle, camp or train outdoors.
- Battery capacity, sunlight readability and titanium construction outweigh compactness.
- You want the announced trail and diving functions and accept a separate Mares app later in 2026.
- A 47mm watch is comfortable for your wrist and the premium price fits your budget.
Consider waiting when
- You need independent battery, GPS, brightness and comfort testing.
- A health feature must be available in your country or approved for a specific medical use.
- You already own a recent Galaxy Watch and want measured gains rather than headline specifications.
- Your main reason to buy is Mares integration, which Samsung schedules for later in 2026.
Compatibility and ownership details to check
- Confirm Android-phone and Samsung Galaxy-phone requirements for each health or coaching feature.
- Check Samsung Health, software-version and regional regulatory requirements for ECG, blood-pressure, sleep-apnea and similar functions.
- Verify LTE carrier compatibility and remember that cellular service normally adds a recurring carrier charge.
- Check band compatibility by case size and generation before buying replacements.
- Assess the 47mm Ultra2 on your wrist; the thinner body does not remove its larger footprint.
What remains unproven
Samsung’s 5,000-nit, battery-capacity, thinner-body and lighter-band figures are manufacturer claims. They do not establish sustained outdoor brightness, multi-day endurance, improved health accuracy or superior performance to Exynos watches. Independent testing is also needed to assess GPS, sleep tracking, trail metrics, hydration estimates and real-world diving usability.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch9 is the sensible everyday choice for most Samsung phone owners: smaller sizes, sleep-friendly wearability and a broad health-guidance package. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the headline device for buyers who genuinely value a 47mm titanium watch, a much larger battery, maximum claimed display brightness and specialized outdoor or diving tools. Its specifications are ambitious, but the practical upgrade case will depend on testing, regional feature support and how comfortable that large case proves in daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the next Samsung Galaxy Watch the Galaxy Watch9 or Ultra2?
Both. Samsung’s 2026 generation consists of the mainstream Galaxy Watch9 in 40mm and 44mm sizes and the 47mm Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for outdoor and endurance use.
Does the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 replace a dive computer?
No. It adds depth, time and temperature recording and carries stated certifications, but it should not replace certified dive equipment, training or professional safety procedures. Planned Mares features require a separate app and are scheduled for later in 2026.
Do LTE Galaxy Watch models require a monthly plan?
LTE models require compatible carrier activation, which generally adds a recurring cellular charge. Confirm carrier support and pricing before checkout.
