Samsung’s official name is Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024), not Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra. Announced on July 10, 2024 alongside Galaxy Watch7, it puts a circular 1.5-inch AMOLED display inside a rounded-square “cushion” case. The squircle makes Samsung’s premium watch look tougher and creates room for a larger battery, but it also adds bulk and removes the rotating bezel that many Galaxy Watch owners prefer. In August 2026, the original Ultra is most compelling at a meaningful discount—not as Samsung’s unquestioned flagship, because a newer Ultra 2 now exists.
What the Galaxy Watch Ultra actually is
“Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra” is understandable shorthand for the Ultra launched in the Watch7 generation. Samsung’s precise product name is Galaxy Watch Ultra. It sits above the regular Watch7 as Samsung’s rugged, LTE-capable Wear OS model, with a titanium case, large battery, dual-frequency GPS and outdoor-focused software.
The defining change is external. A round screen remains, but a broad, rounded-square chassis surrounds it. Samsung’s product language calls this shape a cushion; “squircle” is the useful shorthand for a form that blends square and circle. It is not a square display.

Why Samsung chose a squircle case
The shape appears designed to establish a clear premium tier, signal adventure use and package a bigger battery and protective surround without abandoning Samsung’s familiar circular Wear OS interface. That last point is an inference from the circular display inside the new chassis, not a quoted Samsung explanation. It also gives Samsung a recognizable visual answer to Apple’s Ultra category while retaining Samsung Health, Galaxy phone integration and round watch faces.
What works—and what does not
Functional advantages
- A raised surround places more material around the display and can help shield it from knocks.
- Grade 4 titanium, sapphire crystal and the substantial case feel more premium than standard Galaxy Watch construction. Sapphire availability and specification wording can vary by market, so confirm the exact regional listing.
- The 47mm body houses a 590mAh battery.
- A dedicated customizable action button can start workouts or launch a selected function quickly.
- A bright, large panel is easier to read outdoors.
- The case gives the watch a secure, substantial grip and a distinctive silhouette.
Costs of the shape
- The body is approximately 60.5g without its strap and 12.1mm thick, so it can feel oversized on a small wrist.
- The circular panel leaves unused corners inside the squircle; it does not provide the rectangular workspace of an Apple Watch Ultra.
- Owners of Galaxy Watch Classic models lose Samsung’s mechanical rotating bezel.
- The styling invites Apple Watch Ultra comparisons, even though the display, software and controls remain different.

The rotating bezel is gone
The Ultra uses a digital bezel: you swipe or touch around the screen instead of turning a physical ring. Removing moving parts may suit a rugged design, but it is not an across-the-board upgrade. Wet fingers, sweat, gloves and cold-weather use can make touch navigation less dependable, particularly during exercise. The action button helps with one-touch tasks but cannot reproduce bezel-based scrolling.
This is the most consequential change for Watch6 Classic owners. If the bezel is central to how you navigate, a Classic model may remain the better watch even if the Ultra’s materials and endurance are stronger. Battery: better endurance, not Garmin endurance
Samsung publishes up to 60 hours with the always-on display enabled, up to 80 hours with it disabled in some specifications, and up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode. Those are maximum scenarios. LTE, GPS, always-on display, sleep tracking, music, notifications and long workouts can reduce runtime substantially.
In practical terms, the Ultra generally lasts longer than mainstream Wear OS watches and is likely to need charging every few days in ordinary smartwatch use. It remains far shorter-lived than many Garmin watches, and multi-day expeditions may require power-saving compromises. Independent reviews discuss that trade-off at Android Authority and TechRadar.

How ECG works for compatible U.S. users
- Pair the watch with a compatible Galaxy phone through Galaxy Wearable.
- Update the watch, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor.
- Open Samsung Health Monitor and complete the profile and permissions.
- Wear the watch snugly, open ECG and rest your forearm.
- Lightly touch the top button with a finger from the opposite hand for about 30 seconds without moving or talking.
- Review the result in Samsung Health Monitor.
Phone compatibility is a buying decision
The Ultra supports Android phones running Android 11 or later, but it is not compatible with iPhone. Non-Samsung Android phones can pair with it, while Samsung-specific services and advanced health functions are limited. Samsung Pay and Samsung Health Monitor features including ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications and sleep-apnea functions require a compatible Galaxy phone. A Pixel or OnePlus owner should therefore treat “Android compatible” as basic pairing, not identical functionality.
Galaxy Watch Ultra versus other choices
Regular Galaxy Watch7
Choose the regular Watch7 if you want a lighter, less conspicuous circular watch and do not need titanium, LTE, the Ultra’s battery capacity or its outdoor-oriented construction. TechRadar identifies Watch7 as the better-value choice for buyers who do not need the Ultra’s toughness: review.
Galaxy Watch6 Classic or a later Classic model
Choose a Classic when the physical rotating bezel and traditional watch appearance matter more than the Ultra’s rugged case and battery. This is a preference trade-off, not a simple generational upgrade.

Garmin
Garmin is the more natural fit for athletes who prioritize multi-day or multi-week battery life, structured training, recovery metrics and expedition navigation. Samsung is stronger as an all-purpose smartwatch with apps, calls, notifications, LTE and Galaxy services; the Ultra is not a universal Garmin replacement.
Google Pixel Watch 4
Pixel Watch 4 suits Pixel and Google-oriented Android users who want a smaller, lighter watch with Google/Fitbit integration. Google lists 41mm and 45mm versions from $349.99 in the U.S.; LTE, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and protection-plan options vary by configuration and location: store page and specifications. It lacks the Ultra’s titanium construction, 590mAh battery, 10ATM rating and Samsung-exclusive health features.
Apple Watch Ultra
Apple’s Ultra is relevant as a design and feature comparison, not as an Android alternative. Its rectangular display and watchOS experience differ fundamentally from Samsung’s circular panel and Wear OS software.

- Buy it if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone, want LTE, prefer the squircle design, need a large bright screen and battery, and regularly hike, run, cycle, swim or train outdoors.
- Choose Watch7 or a current regular Galaxy Watch for lower weight, lower cost and a conventional circular case.
- Choose Classic if bezel navigation is essential.
- Choose Garmin if charger-free endurance and specialized training outweigh apps and Samsung integration.
- Choose Pixel Watch 4 if you live in Google’s ecosystem and prefer a smaller watch.
- Do not buy the Ultra for an iPhone, a very small wrist, or an expectation of Garmin-style expedition battery life.
Should you buy the original Ultra in 2026?

Later 2026 coverage describes a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 with a newer processor and larger battery, so the 2024 model is now primarily a value or design purchase rather than Samsung’s unqualified current flagship: TechRadar’s Ultra 2 coverage.
Buy the original when its discount is substantial, its condition and warranty are clear, and you specifically want the squircle, titanium case, LTE or Samsung’s outdoor feature set. Pay for the newer Ultra 2 when current hardware and maximum longevity matter more than price. For comfort, value or a rotating bezel, a regular or Classic Galaxy Watch may be the smarter 2026 decision.
Verdict
The squircle is more than cosmetic: it supports the protective surround, battery capacity, action button and premium positioning. But it does not create a square screen, and it costs you slimness and the rotating bezel. Galaxy Watch Ultra is a successful identity change for Samsung-phone owners who want a rugged, versatile smartwatch; it is not an automatic upgrade for Classic owners, small-wrist buyers, iPhone users or endurance athletes seeking Garmin-level battery life.
