The Praesidus C-47 D-Day A-11 and the Utah Beach sand-dial watch tell the Normandy story through different materials: the C-47 uses aluminum from C-47 aircraft doors, while the companion Type 44 uses sand collected at Utah Beach. Both were released in 2024 for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Two watches, two different links to Normandy
The C-47 A-11 is the aircraft-material model. Its dial is made with aluminum cut from the “hamburger” doors of C-47 aircraft, according to Praesidus and launch coverage by Monochrome Watches and Fratello Watches. Praesidus says the original surface wear is retained, so each dial has its own scratches and patina.
The companion Type 44, also described as the Utah Beach or sand-dial watch, uses actual sand collected at Utah Beach. Praesidus says the sand was collected on the 79th anniversary of D-Day in 2023. Layered dial elements evoke the Normandy coastline; the sand watch is not the C-47 aluminum model.
Both are commemorative designs, not watches issued to servicemen during World War II. The C-47 takes its A-11 styling cues from a wartime U.S. military-watch form, while its distinctive dial material is repurposed aircraft aluminum.

What the C-47 A-11 offers
Aircraft aluminum with individual wear
The reused aluminum is the defining feature, and it also means the dials are not visually uniform. Scratches and patina vary from watch to watch rather than being identical decorative printing. Praesidus offered three reported dial variants: raw aluminum with patina, aluminum gray, and olive green.
Launch-era specifications
Praesidus lists a 38 mm stainless-steel case, screw-down crown, 10 ATM water resistance, double-domed sapphire crystal, sword hands with Super-LumiNova, and a Miyota 9039 automatic movement. The listed strap options are an Invasion NATO or brown leather. Monochrome’s June 2024 launch coverage additionally reported a 42-hour power reserve, 24 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a stated accuracy rating of -10/+30 seconds per day. These are published specifications, not results from an independent accuracy test.

Launch price and edition size
Monochrome and Fratello reported a launch price of $550 and a limit of 500 pieces for each C-47 dial variant. Those are launch-era terms, not a promise of current availability or price.
How the sand-dial Type 44 differs
The Type 44 makes the beach itself the material story: actual Utah Beach sand sits beneath layered elements intended to depict the Normandy coast. Monochrome reported a 38 mm case, a Miyota automatic movement, an acrylic crystal, a 500-piece limit, and a $495 launch price. These are launch-era reported details; the cited coverage does not establish current pricing or stock.

The most practical distinction is material and finish: the C-47 is the aluminum-and-aircraft-history choice, while the Type 44 is the sand-and-shoreline choice. Their launch prices should not be treated as current offers.
Availability and what to verify
The Praesidus product and collection listings reviewed for this coverage showed the C-47 variants as sold out. That describes those official listings at the time they were checked; it does not establish whether a later restock occurred or what may be available through other sellers. Praesidus states that every watch is assembled and tested in the United States. That is the manufacturer’s own statement, rather than independent verification of its production process.

- Choose the C-47 for the aircraft connection: its salvaged aluminum dial and naturally varied wear make the material provenance the central feature.
- Choose the Type 44 for the beach connection: it uses Utah Beach sand and a layered coastal dial rather than aircraft material.
- Compare the details, not just the story: the Type 44’s acrylic crystal differs from the C-47’s sapphire, and launch prices and edition sizes were not identical.
Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink described his personal reaction to the raw aluminum as changing in light of the dials’ context. That is one reviewer’s response, not a universal assessment; buyers should expect the aluminum’s aged, marked appearance to be part of the appeal rather than a flaw-free uniform finish.
