Fitbit vs Garmin: Which Fitness Tracker or Band Should You Buy in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal winner: choose Fitbit for a lighter, simpler wellness tracker and easy-to-read sleep insights; choose Garmin for longer battery life, broader sports support and training data that scales from casual exercise to serious running or outdoor use. For a like-for-like band comparison, look at the Fitbit Charge 6 and Garmin vívosmart 5. If you want a full GPS watch, compare the Charge 6 with the Garmin vívoactive 6 instead.

Quick picks: which brand suits you?

What matters most Best starting point Why
Simple daily wellness and readable sleep summaries Fitbit Charge 6 It combines everyday activity tracking, a consumer-friendly app and built-in GPS. Some deeper insights and content require Fitbit Premium.
A slim Garmin band Garmin vívosmart 5 It adds Garmin health and recovery features in a band, but relies on a paired phone for GPS.
Phone-free GPS and more sports features Garmin vívoactive 6 It is a full GPS smartwatch with sports apps and a longer manufacturer-rated smartwatch battery life than the Charge 6.
Structured running and advanced training Garmin Forerunner range Dedicated running models offer a more suitable path to structured workouts and performance-focused training tools than a basic band.
Data without a mandatory core-app membership Garmin Garmin Connect generally provides core health and training data without a required subscription; optional Connect+ features and terms can vary.

Fitbit and Garmin are not single, directly comparable products. Fitbit’s range is centered on wellness trackers and Google-connected devices; Garmin spans slim bands, general-purpose GPS watches and specialist running and outdoor watches. Match the device class to your needs before judging the brand.

What are you comparing: a band, smartwatch or sports watch?

Device class Fitbit examples Garmin examples Best comparison for
Slim fitness band Charge 6, Inspire 3 vívosmart 5 Everyday activity, general wellness and a discreet wrist-worn device
Fitness-focused smartwatch Versa and Sense models or Google-connected watch options vívoactive 6 Health tracking, workouts and useful smartwatch features
Training or outdoor watch Fitbit is less focused on this category Forerunner, Instinct, Fenix and Enduro ranges Running, cycling, hiking, multisport and more demanding training

A band-versus-band comparison is Charge 6 against vívosmart 5, with an important GPS difference. For a more capable Garmin watch, the vívoactive 6 is a better match than the vívosmart 5, though it is larger and costs more. Dedicated Forerunner or outdoor models make more sense when training or navigation is the priority.

Fitbit Charge 6 vs Garmin vívosmart 5

These are the closest band-style comparison in the supplied product range, but they are not identical alternatives: Charge 6 has onboard GPS, while vívosmart 5 uses a paired phone’s GPS. Charge 6’s official US product listing showed a price of $159.95 when checked for this comparison; Garmin’s vívosmart 5 launch MSRP was $149.99, not a statement of its current selling price.

Feature Fitbit Charge 6 Garmin vívosmart 5
Form factor and focus Slim tracker for general wellness, exercise and Google-connected conveniences Slim band for everyday health metrics within Garmin Connect
GPS Built-in GPS and GLONASS; can record outdoor routes without a phone No onboard GPS; uses Connected GPS from a paired phone
Battery claim Google rates it for up to seven days; GPS and other settings can shorten this A comparable battery rating is not stated in the cited launch source

Subscription exposure Basic recording remains available, but some insights and content are Premium features Garmin described its health and wellness features as requiring no subscription at launch; optional newer Connect+ features are separate
Phone compatibility iOS and Android, subject to operating-system and feature requirements Apple and Android phones, subject to compatibility requirements

Choose Charge 6 if you want GPS without carrying your phone

Charge 6 records GPS and GLONASS location itself, which makes it the stronger choice between these two for outdoor walks and runs when you leave your phone behind. Google’s US listing describes Google Wallet, Google Maps-related features and YouTube Music controls; specific functions can depend on phone, account, market and service requirements. The same listing gives a US price signal of $159.95, which can change with promotions.

Choose vívosmart 5 if Garmin’s wellness ecosystem matters more than onboard GPS

The vívosmart 5 presents health and activity measures such as stress, sleep and Body Battery within Garmin’s broader ecosystem. Its trade-off is phone dependence for route tracking. Garmin’s launch announcement put its US MSRP at $149.99; check current availability and retailer pricing rather than treating that launch figure as today’s price.

Garmin’s Connected GPS instructions require the phone to be present, Bluetooth enabled, Garmin Connect available and location access configured. On iPhone, Garmin specifies location access, precise location and cellular-data permission for Connect. If the phone is absent or the connection and permissions fail, the vívosmart 5 cannot provide a proper GPS route. Garmin’s Connected GPS setup instructions cover the requirements.

When to step up to the Garmin vívoactive 6

The vívoactive 6 is a full GPS smartwatch rather than a band: it has a color AMOLED display, sports apps, Garmin Pay and music support. Garmin announced it on April 1, 2025, with a US suggested retail price of $299.99 and ordering from Garmin beginning April 4, 2025. Those are launch details, not a guaranteed current price. Garmin rates its battery for up to 11 days in smartwatch mode; GPS activity, music and display settings can reduce that figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the vívoactive 6 if you want standalone GPS, more sport options, smartwatch functions and health measures such as Body Battery and sleep coaching. It is a larger, more capable device than Charge 6, but its additional features bring more interface complexity and a higher launch price. If running performance and structured training are central, compare a Forerunner rather than assuming the vívoactive 6 covers every specialist need. Garmin’s vívoactive 6 announcement lists its launch features and ratings.

Everyday activity, heart rate and health metrics

Steps, activity and calories

Both ecosystems track everyday movement and activity, but Fitbit’s presentation is generally the more approachable starting point. Active Zone Minutes offer a simple way to consider exercise intensity. Garmin supplies a wider selection of activity profiles and more training-oriented context. Steps and calorie estimates are estimates, not exact measurements, and different brands are not expected to agree perfectly.

Do not buy either brand on a promise of categorical sensor superiority. Optical readings can vary with the specific device, fit, activity, skin characteristics and software. A band worn loosely can produce poor readings; tattoos, sweat, cold skin, movement and a tight grip during strength work can also affect wrist sensors.

Heart rate: daily trends versus hard workouts

Both brands offer all-day or near-continuous heart-rate tracking, depending on device and settings. For many users, either may be adequate for resting trends, walking and easy running. Rapid changes in effort, intervals, rowing and strength training are more difficult for wrist-based optical sensors. If accurate heart-rate zones matter to your training, a compatible chest strap is often a better option than relying on the wrist reading alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charge 6 supports Bluetooth heart-rate functionality with compatible exercise equipment, as described on Google’s Charge 6 product page. Compatibility is not universal across every machine. Charge 6 also includes an ECG app, but its availability and regulatory permissions vary by market; an ECG feature is not a diagnosis. Garmin ECG availability is model-specific and should not be assumed across the brand.

Sleep and recovery

Fitbit is a good fit for people who want sleep stages and scores presented in an easy-to-read consumer dashboard. Premium adds deeper sleep-related insights and content. That strength is interpretation and presentation, not proof that every underlying sleep measurement is superior.

Fitbit Google Air Activity Tracker, Obsidian
  • Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]
  • Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
  • Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
  • Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
  • Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]

Garmin connects sleep scores and coaching with broader context such as stress, activity and recovery on compatible devices. Body Battery availability varies by model, so check the specific watch’s feature list rather than assuming every Garmin device includes every metric. Garmin’s Body Battery compatibility information explains that model dependence.

Neither brand’s consumer sleep stages should be treated as a clinical sleep study or a diagnosis. Likewise, stress, oxygen-saturation, calorie and readiness estimates are wellness information, not a substitute for medical advice or regulated medical monitoring.

GPS and outdoor workouts: can you leave your phone behind?

This is the most practical difference between Charge 6 and vívosmart 5. Charge 6 has built-in GPS and GLONASS; vívosmart 5 depends on a paired phone for GPS. If you want to run or walk without a phone and still record a route, rule out the vívosmart 5 and look at Charge 6 or a Garmin watch with onboard GPS. Google’s Charge 6 specifications list built-in GPS and GLONASS.

Garmin’s vívoactive 6 and dedicated GPS watches are designed for standalone activity recording, but battery use, satellite performance and navigation features differ by model. Built-in GPS alone does not make a device a complete running platform: training plans, structured workouts, post-run analysis, battery use and the comfort of carrying or leaving a phone also matter.

  • For basic outdoor pace, distance and route recording: Charge 6 can do the job without a phone.
  • For a Garmin band: carry the paired phone and confirm Garmin Connect, Bluetooth and location permissions are set up.
  • For regular running or multisport training: compare GPS watches, especially Garmin Forerunner models, rather than choosing on the GPS checkbox alone.

GPS can take longer to lock in urban canyons, beneath dense trees or near large structures. A GPS workout also uses more power than ordinary daily tracking, so the day-to-day battery rating is not a GPS-session promise.

Battery life and charging

Model Manufacturer figure in the cited source What can reduce it
Fitbit Charge 6 Google rates it for up to seven days GPS, always-on display behavior, SpO2 use, notifications and other features
Garmin vívoactive 6 Garmin rates it for up to 11 days in smartwatch mode GPS activity, music, display settings and notifications
Garmin vívosmart 5 A comparable figure is not stated in the cited launch announcement Check current product information for the device and settings you plan to use

These are manufacturer “up to” ratings, not guaranteed real-world results or directly comparable lab measurements: brands use different conditions, and actual use changes endurance. Garmin offers models with substantially more endurance than many band-style trackers, but battery life is model- and mode-specific. Frequent GPS sessions, music playback, screen use and notifications can change the result. Forgetting to charge a tracker can leave a gap in overnight sleep data; forgetting a phone with the vívosmart 5 can leave a gap in GPS route data.

Apps, subscriptions and what remains free

Fitbit and Google

Fitbit’s app is aimed at clear wellness summaries and consumer-friendly interpretation, and can suit people already invested in Fitbit history and routines. Current Fitbit products require a Google account; check the account and device requirements for your particular setup before buying. Google-connected services can be useful, but availability depends on phone, market, account, compatible apps and services.

Basic Charge 6 tracking does not stop if you decline Premium. However, some advanced insights, Daily Readiness-related features, guided workouts and extra content are Premium benefits. Google’s US Charge 6 listing showed Premium at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year after the applicable trial, and the trial’s length and eligibility can change by product, promotion, customer and market. A payment method may be required to activate a trial; check renewal terms at checkout and set a reminder if you do not intend to continue. The Google Store listing with US Premium terms is the place to verify current terms.

Garmin Connect and optional Connect+

Garmin Connect generally makes substantial core health and training data available without a mandatory membership. Optional Garmin Connect+ adds features beyond that core experience, so check which tier includes a specific feature before buying. A 2026 TechRadar fitness-tracker guide reported Connect+ at approximately $6.99 per month; treat that as a reported price signal, not a permanent price or a guarantee for every market. Verify the live price and feature list for your region.

Garmin’s depth can be an advantage for training history, workout creation and sports analysis, but the number of metrics and menus can feel less immediately intuitive than Fitbit’s simpler wellness dashboard. Feature support varies considerably across Garmin models. Before choosing a brand, also check which data you want to preserve and what export options are available for the account and device you use.

  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

Which should you buy for your activity?

Walking, general wellness and gym sessions

Choose Charge 6 if you want a lightweight band, understandable everyday summaries and onboard GPS for occasional outdoor exercise. Choose vívosmart 5 if you prefer Garmin’s wellness and activity ecosystem and are comfortable bringing your phone for location tracking. Neither is the best fit if you need extensive post-workout analysis.

Sleep tracking and recovery context

Start with Fitbit if readable sleep scores and wellness interpretation are your priority, while factoring in Premium if its additional insights matter to you. Choose a compatible Garmin if you want sleep and recovery presented alongside a wider set of training and stress metrics.

Running

Charge 6 suits basic runs where pace, distance, heart rate and a route are enough. The vívosmart 5 is a poor fit for phone-free runs because GPS depends on the phone. For a standalone Garmin running watch with more training features, compare the vívoactive 6; for structured workouts, race preparation and performance metrics, look at Forerunner models.

Cycling, hiking, swimming and multisport

Garmin is usually the more appropriate place to start if you participate in several sports, want a wider set of profiles or expect your training needs to grow. Compatible watches can support broader sports and accessory ecosystems; the exact tools depend on model. For hiking, compare outdoor models if you need navigation or rugged features. Fitbit is more suited to general gym use, walking and basic cardio than deep multisport analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Water resistance does not mean that every device is suitable for every kind of swimming, diving, hot-tub use or high-pressure water exposure. Check the exact model’s water-use limits before taking it into a particular environment.

Phone-free workouts

Between the Charge 6 and vívosmart 5, choose Charge 6 for phone-free GPS. If you would rather stay with Garmin, choose a model with onboard GPS, such as the vívoactive 6 or an appropriate sports watch.

Budget and subscription priorities

Compare the price at purchase with what you will actually use without a paid tier. Charge 6’s US Google Store price signal was $159.95 when checked, while vívosmart 5’s cited $149.99 is its US launch MSRP; neither number guarantees a current sale or local price. Fitbit may cost more over time if you choose to keep Premium, while Garmin’s core data generally does not require a membership. Replacement bands, chargers and other accessories are optional costs, not necessities for every buyer.

Should you consider an alternative?

  • iPhone users who want a smartwatch: compare Apple Watch for deeper iPhone integration, while accounting for its different battery and platform trade-offs.
  • Samsung phone users: a Samsung Galaxy Watch may offer more integrated smartwatch functions; it is a less natural choice for iPhone users.
  • Screen-free sleep or recovery tracking: Oura and Whoop are different products with different form factors and membership models. Fitbit Air and Garmin Cirqa also belong in a separate screenless-tracker comparison, not as unannounced replacements for Charge 6 and vívosmart 5. The cited Tom’s Guide comparison covers those newer products; check current official specifications and availability before treating either as a purchase option.
  • Lowest-cost bands: Xiaomi, Amazfit and similar brands may offer lower prices, but app quality, support, privacy, accuracy and availability vary by model and region.
  • Rugged outdoor use or long expeditions: compare Garmin Instinct, Fenix or Enduro models, recognizing that they are bulkier and generally more expensive than a band.
  • Medical monitoring: choose an appropriately regulated medical device with clinical guidance, rather than relying on a consumer tracker’s ECG, oxygen, sleep or readiness estimates.

Verdict: Fitbit for simplicity, Garmin for sport and progression

For a casual user who wants a discreet wellness tracker, Fitbit Charge 6 is the more straightforward choice, especially if built-in GPS and a friendly sleep dashboard matter. For someone who wants to train, build toward multiple sports, track routes without a phone or keep core health and training data outside a mandatory subscription, Garmin is the stronger ecosystem—but choose the right Garmin class. The vívosmart 5 is a band, the vívoactive 6 is a general-purpose GPS smartwatch, and Forerunner or outdoor models suit more specialized needs.
