Fratello’s five Milgauss picks are five versions, not five distinct reference numbers: the article acknowledges four references and separates the modern 116400 family into black- and white-dial models and the 116400 GV Z-Blue. The selection is an enthusiast’s ranking, not an objective test. Its appeal lies in the Milgauss’s practical anti-magnetic purpose and distinctive details, especially the lightning-bolt seconds hand.
What is the Rolex Milgauss?
Rolex says it created the Milgauss in 1956 for engineers and technicians exposed to magnetic fields. Its user guide says the watch was designed to resist interference of up to 1,000 gauss while maintaining chronometric performance. Rolex describes the core solution as an internal shield protecting the movement, and says CERN researchers tested the watch. Rolex’s history of the Milgauss identifies the 6541 as the 1956 model and the 116400 GV as a 2014 model.
The lightning-bolt seconds hand became the model’s signature, appearing on the 6541 and returning on modern versions. The 1019, by contrast, used a straight seconds hand. The differences make the Milgauss a useful example of how one technical brief could yield markedly different designs over several decades.
Fratello’s five selections
Jorg Weppelink’s November 1, 2024, Fratello feature presents five selections while noting there are technically four reference numbers. The modern 116400 is counted as a model family—black and white dials—and the green-crystal Z-Blue receives its own place. Weppelink’s preference for the 6541 and for a black-dial GV over Z-Blue is personal taste, not a universal ranking.

1. Ref. 6543: the early, Submariner-like Milgauss
Fratello describes the 6543 as a 38 mm steel watch with a Submariner-style 60-minute bezel insert, dauphine hands, and a honeycomb dial with triangular markers at 3, 6, and 9. Its movement, caliber 1065, was housed inside a soft-iron Faraday cage; Fratello says it derived from caliber 1030 and ran at 18,800 vibrations per hour with a 48-hour reserve.
The exact introduction year is disputed: Fratello gives 1954/55 while noting disagreement among sources. Its article also repeats an estimate of 150 examples, but treats the production detail as uncertain. Neither point should be read as settled fact.

2. Ref. 6541: the lightning bolt arrives
The 6541 retained the 38 mm case and honeycomb dial, according to Fratello, but introduced the lightning-bolt seconds hand. Its rotating bezel insert was divided into six sections and marked with a red triangle. Fratello quotes an advertisement describing the bezel as a device that “serves as a simple stopwatch or for timing different operations.”
The movement and case details are less straightforward. Fratello reports caliber 1066M followed by caliber 1065M, also called 1080, alongside changes to the anti-magnetic case construction. Some examples have fixed bezels; the article says these were supposedly made for the American market. That attribution remains qualified rather than definitive.

3. Ref. 1019: a quieter, longer-lived design
Fratello dates the 1019’s introduction to 1960 and says it remained in production until 1988. Its 38 mm Oyster Precision-style case had a fixed polished bezel. Dial options included matte black and vertically brushed silver; Fratello also notes rare glossy black examples. Red Milgauss text and a red seconds-hand tip remained, but the lightning bolt gave way to a straight hand.
In Fratello’s account, caliber 1580 replaced 1080, raised the frequency to 19,800 vibrations per hour, and later gained hacking seconds in 1972. These reference-specific historical details are reported by Fratello rather than established in the Rolex materials cited here.

4. Ref. 116400: black- and white-dial modern models
Rolex relaunched the Milgauss family in 2007, according to Fratello, with 40 mm models, black or white dials, orange accents, and the returning lightning-bolt seconds hand. The standard-sapphire black- and white-dial versions were discontinued in 2016, the article reports.

The GV adds a green sapphire crystal. Rolex’s 116400 GV brochure documents a Z-Blue configuration with a 40 mm Oystersteel case, smooth bezel, scratch-resistant green sapphire crystal, and water resistance to 100 metres (330 feet). It specifies caliber 3131 with a magnetic shield, stop-seconds, a blue Parachrom hairspring, and approximately 48 hours of power reserve. These brochure specifications describe the documented modern GV configuration; they should not be applied to vintage Milgauss references.

Fratello dates Z-Blue’s debut to 2014 and reports that the black-dial GV and Z-Blue continued until 2023. The article is the source for that production endpoint; Rolex’s current collection listing does not show the Milgauss among the models presented. Fratello’s 2024 market asking-price figures are time-sensitive and are not a reliable guide to current listings.
How to choose between the versions
For design, focus on the features that distinguish the references rather than treating the ranking as a technical verdict. The 6541 is the pick for the early honeycomb dial and lightning-bolt hand; the 1019 offers a more restrained fixed-bezel look; modern 116400 versions bring orange accents, with GV models adding green crystal. The documented 116400 GV specifications cannot establish that one reference is technically or historically superior overall.
For a vintage watch, provenance, originality, and condition matter, but the sources here do not provide an authentication checklist. Rolex says genuine new watches are sold exclusively through Official Rolex Jewelers, who warrant authenticity and provide the international five-year guarantee subject to its terms. That statement concerns new authorized sales and does not authenticate a pre-owned listing.
Will Rolex bring the Milgauss back?
The available sources establish that Fratello reported the family discontinued in 2023 and that Rolex’s current collection presentation does not list it. They do not establish whether or when Rolex will reintroduce it. Any prediction about a return would be speculation.
