The new metal blade-style stem is both a visual change and the main control surface, paired with revised ergonomics, updated audio processing and a redesigned case. At $249.99 in the U.S., they make the most sense for Galaxy phone owners; iPhone users and satisfied Buds3 Pro owners have less reason to switch.
What changed in the Galaxy Buds4 Pro redesign?
The Buds4 Pro keeps the sealed, silicone-tip in-ear design of the Pro line and the stem-style architecture introduced with the Buds3 Pro. Samsung has reshaped that stem into a metallic-looking blade, differentiated the pinch-control area, refined the earbud proportions and changed the charging case’s orientation and presentation. This is not the open-fit design used by the standard Galaxy Buds4.
Samsung says its ergonomic design work included more than 10,000 simulations. That explains the design intent, not a guarantee of universal comfort: ear shape, tip choice and how the blade sits vary from person to person. Samsung’s design overview describes the blade as both an aesthetic and an interaction element (Samsung Design).
Samsung lists each Buds4 Pro earbud at 5.1 g and 30.9 × 18.1 × 19.6 mm. For comparison, the Buds3 Pro earbud weighs 5.4 g. The 0.3 g reduction is a modest specification change; the more noticeable difference is likely to be the new shape and control surface, rather than weight alone. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report lists the dimensions and weight.

What does the blade do in everyday use?
The blade is the primary physical control surface, not just decoration. Pinching the marked area is intended to make playback and call actions deliberate, while pinch-and-hold actions can control noise modes. Swiping gestures can adjust volume where supported, and head gestures support selected call and assistant interactions. The available actions and device requirements differ, so do not assume every gesture behaves identically with every phone.
- More deliberate input: Pinching may reduce accidental touches compared with tapping a smooth earbud shell.
- A learning curve: The control area may feel unfamiliar at first, and reaching it can be awkward for some users. Pressing the earbud can also push it farther into the ear.
- Fit affects control: If the earbud shifts or the blade is hard to reach in your ear, the interaction can be less convenient. Gloves and movement may make precise gestures harder.
Samsung’s feature-availability chart, dated March 3, 2026, is the clearest guide to which controls work with which device categories.
Rank #2
- Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): Blocks out unwanted background noise so you can focus on music, calls, or podcasts
- True Wireless Convenience: Enjoy tangle-free Bluetooth connectivity for seamless listening on the go.
- Intuitive Touch Controls: Easily manage calls, adjust volume, and control playback without reaching for your phone.
- International Model without Domestic Warranty: The Galaxy Buds 4 Pro SM-R640 are an International Version and do not include a local warranty. Optimized for Android, particularly Samsung Galaxy devices, they offer advanced features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), 360 Audio, Hi-Fi sound, and real-time AI-based audio enhancements. While fully compatible with iOS devices via Bluetooth, certain features like ANC customization and 360 Audio are exclusive to Galaxy Android devices.
How do they sound, and how good are ANC and calls?
Samsung’s audio changes include a wider woofer design, Enhanced Adaptive EQ and processing intended to improve bass extension, clarity and balance. The company calls these its best-sounding Galaxy Buds yet; that is Samsung’s characterization, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer them. Independent reviews praise the sound, while treating noise cancellation and battery endurance as competitive rather than clear category leaders (Android Authority; RTINGS).
Adaptive ANC adjusts to wearing conditions and surrounding sound. A good ear-tip seal remains essential: a loose fit can let noise in and make cancellation seem weaker, regardless of the processing. Samsung also supports high-resolution audio on compatible Galaxy hardware, but that does not mean every phone, streaming service or Bluetooth source delivers 24-bit/96kHz playback. Device, codec, source quality and connection conditions all matter; generic Bluetooth devices should not be expected to provide the same codec or processing support.

For calls, Samsung describes improved voice processing using its DNN approach and Super Wideband-related enhancements. These capabilities are part of the Galaxy Buds4 series’ call-quality update (Samsung Mobile Press). Real call results still depend on the connected device, network and environment.
Battery, water resistance and fit
Samsung’s estimates are up to 6 hours of playback with ANC enabled or up to 7 hours with ANC disabled. Including the case, its estimates are roughly 26 hours with ANC on and 30 hours with ANC off. These are maximum-use estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; volume, calls, codec, voice detection and other features affect endurance. Independent reviewers note that some premium rivals last longer per charge (What Hi-Fi?; Wired). Battery capacity also declines over time with use, heat and charging cycles.

- True Wireless Convenience: Enjoy tangle-free Bluetooth connectivity for seamless listening on the go.
- Intuitive Touch Controls: Easily manage calls, adjust volume, and control playback without reaching for your phone.
- Call Features: With enhanced Super Wideband (SWB) microphones and AI-based noise reduction, the Buds 4 Pro improve call clarity by filtering out surrounding noise and reconstructing lost voice bits, ensuring clear and uninterrupted communication even in noisy environments.Water & Sweat Resistance: These earbuds are IPX7-rated for water resistance, making them more suitable for workouts and outdoor use in varying weather conditions.

The earbuds are rated IP57. Samsung’s rating covers dust protection and fresh-water immersion up to about three feet for up to 30 minutes under test conditions; it does not make the earbuds waterproof for swimming or protect them from salt water, soap or high-pressure spray. The charging case is not covered by the earbuds’ rating. Check Samsung’s product specifications for the stated limits.
The redesigned shape is still something to try rather than judge from photos. Test the included tip sizes, use the fit test where available, and wear them long enough to notice pressure or movement. Samsung’s user guide describes fit adjustment for the Pro model. A good seal matters for both stability and ANC.

Which features work without a Samsung phone?
Basic Bluetooth audio works with iPhones and other Bluetooth devices, but the full experience is Galaxy-centered. Compatible Galaxy phones provide the broadest access to Samsung-native settings, codec and AI-related functions. Other Android phones can use Bluetooth and may need the Galaxy Wearable app for configuration, with some features unavailable. On iPhone, PC and game consoles, expect a more limited Bluetooth-earbud experience rather than Samsung’s complete ecosystem integration.
| Device | Basic Bluetooth audio | Galaxy-specific features |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible Samsung Galaxy phone | Yes | Broadest support, subject to device and software requirements |
| Other Android phone | Yes | Partial; some setup and controls may require Galaxy Wearable |
| iPhone | Yes | Reduced feature set; not equivalent to Samsung-native integration |
| PC or game console | Yes, where Bluetooth audio is supported | Limited device integration |
Head gestures and assistant access are among the features whose availability depends on the connected device and supported software. Translation or Interpreter-related functions likewise have device, language, software and regional conditions; check Samsung’s dated compatibility chart rather than assuming a feature works on every platform. Samsung ecosystem auto-switching should not be mistaken for universal Bluetooth multipoint across unrelated devices.
Should Buds3 Pro owners upgrade?
The Buds4 Pro is an evolution of the Buds3 Pro, not a wholly new earbud architecture. Consider upgrading if the revised fit works better for you, you want the blade controls or head gestures, or call processing and Galaxy-specific features matter enough to justify replacing a working pair. Its $249.99 U.S. list price matches the prior generation’s mainstream premium tier (Samsung U.S. product page).
If your Buds3 Pro already fit comfortably and meet your needs for sound, battery and calls, the redesign alone may not justify an immediate upgrade. Perceived fit and sound changes are personal, and the new specifications do not establish a proportionally large improvement in every aspect. Buyers drawn to the design but not its new functions can also compare current offers before paying list price.

Who should buy them—and what are the alternatives?
- Galaxy phone owners: A strong fit if you want sealed in-ear earbuds, Samsung integration, physical pinch controls and the broadest access to the advertised features. See Samsung’s U.S. buying page for current availability.
- iPhone owners: AirPods Pro 3 are the more natural choice for Apple’s system integration; the Buds4 Pro still connects over Bluetooth, but with a reduced Samsung feature set (SoundGuys comparison).
- Battery life or broader codec flexibility: Sony’s WF-1000XM6 is a credible alternative, though it costs more in the cited comparison coverage and lacks Samsung-specific integration (Wired review).
- Audio customization: Technics EAH-AZ100 is another premium option to investigate if sound adjustment is the priority rather than Samsung ecosystem features (Technics product page).
Samsung unveiled the series at Galaxy Unpacked on February 25, 2026; its global newsroom announcement is dated February 26. The Buds4 Pro became available in the U.S. on March 11 at a $249.99 list price. Samsung’s announcement and availability notice establish that this is a launched product, not a pending redesign rumor.
