Garmin fēnix 8 Review: A Strong Multisport Watch, Only Sort of a Smartwatch

The fēnix 8 adds phone-linked calls and select on-watch voice commands, but remains a multisport watch first. Here’s what its connectivity, configurations and battery estimates mean for buyers.

The Garmin fēnix 8 is a capable multisport watch with navigation, long battery life and a built-in speaker and microphone for calls when paired with a compatible phone. But the original 2024 generation has no LTE, so its new smartwatch features do not make it phone-independent. Whether it is a good buy depends on whether you want a rugged training and outdoor watch first—or a connected everyday smartwatch.

What changed: calls and voice commands, with an important catch

The fēnix 8 adds a built-in speaker and microphone. Garmin says owners can “Make and take phone calls from the watch when paired with a compatible smartphone.” That pairing requirement is central: the original fēnix 8 generation does not have LTE, so calls still depend on a compatible phone being nearby.

Some voice commands work directly on the watch. Garmin says commands such as starting a strength activity, setting a timer or saving a waypoint need no phone connection. That is a limited set of on-watch commands, not evidence that every assistant feature or online task works offline.

In her October 10, 2024 review for The Verge, Victoria Song judged that the new features do not solve the watch’s phone-dependence problem and that the price increase is hard to justify for buyers seeking a conventional connected smartwatch. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict: a buyer prioritizing training and outdoor functions may value the fēnix for different reasons.

Choose a display and size that fit your priorities

Garmin’s August 27, 2024 launch announcement offered AMOLED models in 43, 47 and 51 mm, and solar-charging models in 47 and 51 mm. Size and display type affect both the wearing experience and the battery estimates Garmin publishes.

Configuration Garmin’s stated smartwatch-mode battery life How to read the figure
51 mm AMOLED Up to 29 days Manufacturer estimate; Garmin’s announcement does not attach the solar-use assumption to this figure.
47 mm AMOLED Up to 16 days; up to 7 days with always-on display Manufacturer estimate in Garmin’s comparison, accessed in 2026.
51 mm solar Up to 48 days with always-on display Manufacturer estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions.

These figures are not a like-for-like independent test: they are Garmin estimates for particular sizes and configurations, and the solar estimate depends on specified exposure to bright light. Always-on display use also changes the stated AMOLED figure for the 47 mm model. Treat the numbers as model-specific guidance rather than a promise of the same runtime in every routine.

Where the fēnix 8 makes the strongest case

The fēnix 8 is most persuasive for someone choosing a multisport and outdoor watch: its appeal centers on activity tracking, mapping and navigation, and endurance between charges. Its new call and voice-command capabilities add convenience, but do not change that basic role. If your priority is training and time outside, the phone-linked calls may be a useful extra rather than the deciding feature.

Launch price is not today’s price

Garmin listed the fēnix 8 at a starting suggested retail price of $999.99 at launch in 2024. That is a historical launch figure, not a current offer or an estimate of today’s street price. Song’s review criticized the increase over the fēnix 7, particularly for people expecting a more complete everyday smartwatch. Current retail pricing is not established here, so check the seller for the price and availability at the time you buy.

Who should consider it?

  • Consider it if you want a feature-rich multisport watch for training and outdoor use, and the display, size and battery characteristics of a specific configuration suit you.
  • Look elsewhere if your main goal is a phone-independent connected watch. Calls on this generation require a paired compatible smartphone, and Garmin’s announced offline voice commands cover only certain tasks.
  • Compare carefully if the price is your deciding factor. The cited $999.99 starting price is from launch, and the review’s value criticism reflects its assessment at that time rather than current retail pricing.
