How to Make a DIY Timegrapher: A Practical Audio-Based Setup

A DIY timegrapher can analyze a watch’s ticking through a microphone and software. Here’s how to set it up, choose key settings, and understand its limits.

You can make a basic DIY timegrapher setup by feeding a mechanical watch’s ticking into audio software that detects beat timing. The practical route is to start with a computer or phone, a suitable microphone, and software such as Timegrapher X—not to copy an unverified circuit. Treat the results as estimates until your specific setup has been calibrated and validated.

What a DIY timegrapher does

A timegrapher listens to the escapement’s tick and tock. Software analyzes when those sounds occur and estimates the movement’s rate deviation, beat error, amplitude, and beat rate. In a DIY setup, the microphone is the sensor; the software turns the captured audio into a visual timing trace and measurements.

This is an audio-measurement project, not a universal parts-and-wiring recipe. The available sources do not establish a complete, independently verified DIY circuit, a compatible pickup model, or performance figures for a particular home-built arrangement.

What you need for a basic setup

  • A mechanical watch with an audible, steady tick. The software needs a usable beat signal to analyze.
  • A phone or computer with an audio input. The exact microphone and connector compatibility depend on your device and software.
  • Timegrapher software. Timegrapher X documents microphone configuration, beat-rate settings, lift-angle entry, gain, and filtering.
  • A microphone or pickup. Timegrapher X recommends an external headset microphone. A contact microphone is another possible approach, but its model, wiring, and compatibility are not specified as universal.
  • A quiet place and a stable way to position the watch. Background noise can interfere with sensing; avoid moving or handling the watch while capturing a reading.

Set up and take a reading

  1. Install and open the software. Use an app that exposes the microphone input and lets you confirm the movement’s beat rate and lift angle. Timegrapher X documents both settings.
  2. Connect the microphone. Begin with an external headset microphone if using Timegrapher X. Select the correct input in the app or device settings. If trying a contact pickup, follow the software’s contact-microphone adjustment guidance; do not assume that an arbitrary pickup will work with your connector or input.
  3. Place the watch near the sensor. Keep the watch still and position the microphone so the ticking is clear without clipping or overwhelming the input. The documentation does not specify a universal distance or mounting fixture.
  4. Reduce noise and adjust the audio signal. Work in a quiet room. Use the app’s gain control to make the ticks detectable without distortion. Timegrapher X provides a high-pass filter; its default high filter is intended to retain higher-frequency ticking while partially reducing ambient noise.
  5. Confirm the beat rate. Timegrapher X lists common rates of 18,000, 19,800, 21,600, 25,200, 28,800, and 36,000 vibrations per hour. Its automatic detection covers the most common rates, with manual selection available when needed. If the displayed rate is implausible or unstable, check the setting and signal before interpreting other results.
  6. Enter the lift angle when evaluating amplitude. Lift angle is used in the amplitude calculation. A wrong setting can make the amplitude estimate unreliable even if the software is detecting beats.
  7. Let the display settle, then record the conditions. Note the watch position, beat-rate setting, lift angle, microphone type, and whether the signal was stable. A reading is more useful when you can reproduce the same setup.

What the readings mean

Reading What it describes What to watch for
Rate deviation Estimated gain or loss, commonly shown in seconds per day. It is an estimate from the captured beats; one reading does not establish how the watch performs across positions or over time.
Beat error The timing difference between tick and tock, commonly shown in milliseconds. Noise or inconsistent beat detection can make the displayed value unreliable.
Amplitude Estimated balance-wheel swing. The software’s calculation depends on the lift-angle setting, so an incorrect value undermines this reading.
Beat rate The movement’s beat frequency, often expressed as vibrations or beats per hour. Confirm automatic detection or select the correct rate manually before assessing the other measurements.

How to check whether the setup is reading sound

Timegrapher X documents a calibration check that uses an earbud speaker to play a simulated 28,800 V/H signal. This can help establish whether the app detects a generated audio signal. It does not validate the microphone’s response to a watch, the watch’s placement, the accuracy of the amplitude calculation, or the overall setup against a calibrated instrument.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For meaningful confidence in the measurements, compare your particular setup with a calibrated reference under repeatable conditions. Without that validation, use DIY results to observe trends in the same setup rather than treating them as certified values or a definitive diagnosis.

DIY readings versus a commercial timegrapher

Commercial specifications provide a useful reference for the kinds of figures a purpose-built instrument may publish, but they are not evidence that a phone-and-microphone setup matches them. Witschi’s undated product pages, observed in 2026, state the following specifications:

Troubleshoot unstable or implausible results

  • The software does not detect beats: reduce surrounding noise, check that the correct audio input is selected, and adjust gain. Reposition the microphone to improve the tick signal.
  • The trace or readings jump around: keep the watch and microphone still, reduce background sound, and check whether the input is clipping or too quiet.
  • The beat rate seems wrong: confirm the movement’s rate or use manual selection if automatic detection has chosen incorrectly.
  • The amplitude looks suspect: verify the lift-angle setting before drawing conclusions. The software uses that setting in its amplitude calculation.
  • A test signal works but the watch does not: the earbud-speaker check only shows that the app can read a generated signal; it does not establish that the watch-microphone arrangement is suitable.

Erratic audio readings are not, by themselves, proof that a watch needs repair. Confirm the signal and settings first, then use a watchmaker or validated instrument for a diagnosis that matters.
