Garmin launched the standard fēnix 8 on August 27, 2024. It is a substantial refinement of the fēnix 7/Epix Pro generation, adding AMOLED across three sizes, a speaker and microphone, voice functions, dedicated recreational-dive tools, expanded strength training, a redesigned sensor guard and updated software. It is not, however, Garmin’s newest fēnix-branded model as of August 18, 2026: the separate fēnix 8 Pro adds inReach LTE and satellite capabilities.
For an existing fēnix 7 Pro or Epix Pro owner, the upgrade makes most sense if you specifically want AMOLED, calls and voice controls, dive features or the newer software branch. Everyone else should choose display technology and case size before paying for premium materials.

AMOLED versus Solar: the decision that matters most
AMOLED
AMOLED is the better choice for colorful maps, bright watch faces and indoor readability. It also makes the fēnix look more like a conventional smartwatch. Its cost is charging frequency, particularly with the always-on display enabled.
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.4” AMOLED display, stainless steel bezel, enhanced graphical interface and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 16 days in smartwatch mode; up to 47 hours in GPS mode. Fits wrists with the following circumference: Silicone band: 125-208 mm UltraFit Band: 125-215 mm Leather Band: 132-210 mm Metal Band: 132-210 mm
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
| AMOLED case | Garmin smartwatch estimate, gesture mode | Always-on estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 43 mm | Up to 10 days | Up to 4 days |
| 47 mm | Up to 16 days | Up to 7 days |
| 51 mm | Up to 29 days | Up to 13 days |
These are Garmin estimates, not guarantees. GPS use, music, notifications, pulse-ox measurements, brightness, temperature and other settings can reduce them. The figures and display-mode definitions are documented in the fēnix 8 owner’s manual.
Solar
Solar models use sunlight-visible MIP displays and are aimed at hikers, expedition users and ultra-distance athletes who value endurance over saturated color. Solar charging extends battery life; it does not make the watch self-sufficient in ordinary indoor or urban use. Garmin’s solar figures assume specified exposure, including several hours outdoors at 50,000 lux.
| Solar case | Smartwatch estimate | Solar-optimized estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 47 mm Solar | Up to 21 days | Up to 28 days with solar |
| 51 mm Solar | Up to 30 days | Up to 48 days with solar |
Solar versions are available only in 47 and 51 mm. Garmin’s comparison data is at Garmin’s product comparison.
Rank #2
- Multisport GPS smartwatch with built-in inReach technology for two-way satellite and LTE connectivity (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Rugged design with a bright 1.4" AMOLED touchscreen display, titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and other premium materials
- In an emergency, inReach satellite technology allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin ResponseSM coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- LTE network connectivity lets you leave your phone behind; use your watch to exchange messages and make voice calls — plus let friends follow along with LiveTrack location sharing (30-second update rate) and location check-ins with the on-device Garmin Messenger app (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply)
- inReach technology allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Sizes, materials and comfort
- 43 mm AMOLED: the smallest and easiest option for smaller wrists, but with the shortest battery life.
- 47 mm: the safest balance of screen area, endurance and daily comfort; available with AMOLED or Solar.
- 51 mm: the endurance leader, but heavier and bulkier during sleep and exercise.
Configurations can combine titanium bezels with sapphire lenses, while less expensive versions use other metals and glass. Sapphire improves scratch resistance, not immunity to impact. Titanium can reduce weight in some configurations but raises price. For gym sessions, commuting and ordinary runs, a standard-glass or steel model may offer better value than premium materials.
What the speaker, microphone and voice features do
The integrated speaker and microphone support voice commands, voice notes, audible alerts and phone calls. Voice-based texts and calls generally run through a compatible paired smartphone; the watch is not an independent cellular phone. Phone compatibility, software and surrounding noise affect performance. This is a meaningful convenience upgrade, but less compelling if you never use calls, messages or voice input.
Training, strength and outdoor functions
Strength training
Garmin adds more structured strength workouts, improved exercise and set tracking, and support for sport-specific plans. The watch can automate some recognition, but users should expect manual corrections and setup for movements it cannot identify reliably. These tools are useful for hybrid athletes and runners who lift regularly; Garmin’s announcement does not establish equivalence to a dedicated strength platform.
Rank #3
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.3” AMOLED display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable steel or titanium bezel and a built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode; up to 28 hours in GPS mode
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
Navigation and endurance
Maps, multi-band GPS, extensive sport profiles, training readiness, training status, recovery metrics, music and Garmin Pay carry over from the previous premium generation. The fēnix 8’s advantage is bringing those capabilities together with the new display, voice and dive hardware rather than replacing every earlier function.
Diving
Dedicated dive activities and depth-related hardware extend the watch into supported recreational diving. Features vary by model and software. Water resistance is not a promise of suitability for technical or professional decompression diving, and the watch does not replace training, a dive plan or specialized equipment. Garmin has continued fixing dive-depth and activity-saving issues through firmware.

Health, ECG and safety limitations
The fēnix 8 offers heart-rate monitoring, Pulse Ox, sleep and sleep score, stress, recovery and body-battery-style metrics. Treat these as wellness and training information, not diagnoses.
Rank #4
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
- Battery performance: up to 48 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 149 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) — all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
The ECG app requires compatible watch and Garmin Connect software, is not available in every region and is subject to regulatory and age restrictions; Garmin’s launch material specifies that it is not intended for people under 22 and is not a medical device for diagnosing or monitoring conditions. Safety and tracking functions can require a compatible phone or additional service.
Durability claims versus real-world use
Garmin says the series has rugged construction, leakproof metal buttons, a new sensor guard and testing against U.S. military standards for thermal, shock and water resistance. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of indestructibility. Water resistance and dive support are separate questions, sapphire’s scratch resistance does not equal impact proofing, and a larger rugged case can be less comfortable for daily wear.

Garmin continues to add and refine features. Its support page listed software version 22.38 in June 2026 for a referenced 43 mm AMOLED model, with dive-related fixes; other models and regions can receive different versions. Garmin’s 2025–2026 update documentation shows continuing health, training and activity changes. Check the exact model, region, Garmin Connect version and installed firmware rather than relying on a launch review. See Garmin support software information and the 2026 update document.

Standard fēnix 8 versus fēnix 8 Pro
The fēnix 8 Pro is a separate, newer variant. It adds inReach technology, LTE and satellite messaging, interactive SOS and offers AMOLED or MicroLED display choices. Choose it for connectivity away from a phone; choose the standard fēnix 8 if you mainly need training, navigation, battery life and multisport tools without connectivity-service costs. Garmin identifies the Pro family at Garmin’s fēnix product page.
How it compares with alternatives
| Alternative | When it makes sense | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| fēnix E | Lower-cost AMOLED entry point. | Garmin’s comparison listed $799.99 and omits ECG, LED flashlight, multi-band GPS and voice calling/texting. |
| Enduro 3 | Maximum endurance for ultras and expeditions. | Garmin listed $899.99, up to 36 days of smartwatch use or up to 90 days with solar under stated conditions; it lacks the fēnix 8’s AMOLED choice. |
| Forerunner 970 | Lighter, running- and triathlon-focused design. | Compare weight, materials, mapping and navigation before assuming either line is superior. |
| fēnix 7 Pro or Epix Pro | Clearance value. | They remain attractive if you do not need the fēnix 8’s speaker/microphone, dive tools or newer software branch. |
Garmin’s U.S. comparison page showed the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8 at $999.99 and up, the fēnix E at $799.99 and Enduro 3 at $899.99 when cited; these are dated price signals, not guaranteed sale prices. See Garmin’s comparison page.
Who should buy the fēnix 8?
- Choose AMOLED for display quality, indoor use, colorful maps or the 43 mm size.
- Choose Solar for multi-day outdoor work, provided a MIP display is acceptable.
- Choose 47 mm for the best general balance of comfort and endurance.
- Choose 51 mm for maximum battery life and a larger wrist.
- Choose sapphire or titanium when scratch resistance, premium construction or lower weight justifies the cost.
- Wait for a discount or buy the previous generation if you do not need voice, dive or the newer software features.
Verdict
The fēnix 8 is a meaningful update, not a total redesign. AMOLED choice, speaker and microphone, recreational-dive support, strength improvements and ongoing software development are its real advances. Decide between AMOLED and Solar first, then select the case size you can comfortably wear; buy the fēnix 8 Pro only when satellite or LTE connectivity is the reason for upgrading.
