This headline refers to Google’s December 12, 2023 Pixel Watch rollout—not a new August 2026 update. Verizon’s schedule, reported on December 11, pointed to that week’s start date, and Google subsequently confirmed a phased release for supported Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4. Delivery depended on carrier and device, so “lands this week” never meant every watch would receive it immediately.
December 2023 update at a glance
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Rollout start | December 12, 2023. Verizon’s expected date was reported by Droid Life; Google confirmed the start in its December 2023 Pixel Watch announcement. |
| Global build | TWD9.231205.001 |
| Eligibility | Supported first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 devices running Wear OS 4 |
| Distribution | Over the air, in phases according to carrier and device |
| Main changes | Do Not Disturb and Bedtime Mode synchronization on the original Pixel Watch; a reported image-retention fix for Pixel Watch 2; bug, performance and security maintenance |
Google’s wording was limited to supported devices. It did not provide a device-by-device timetable proving that every Wi‑Fi and LTE variant updated simultaneously, so model, carrier and region remained relevant.
What changed on each watch
First-generation Pixel Watch: DND and Bedtime synchronization
The original Pixel Watch gained synchronization of Do Not Disturb and Bedtime mode with its paired Pixel phone. The goal was behavior already associated with Pixel Watch 2: changing the mode on one device would be reflected on the other instead of requiring duplicate changes.
The December announcement did not promise a new watch-face control or a complete redesign of these settings. If synchronization is absent after updating, check the Pixel Watch app’s notification-related settings; menu labels can vary by app and software version.

Pixel Watch 2: targeted image-retention fix
Google identified a fix for image retention reported by some Pixel Watch 2 owners. That is a targeted software correction, not a guarantee that every display artifact or persistent burn-in-like symptom is resolved. Continued problems after installation warrant Google support review rather than repeated resets.
General maintenance
The release also contained bug fixes, performance updates and the latest Android security patches included in that December release. Google did not publish a complete line-by-line changelog in the announcement, so claims about additional specific fixes would go beyond the documented information.
Features mentioned alongside the update
Google’s announcement also referenced features that had recently become available to Pixel Watches:

These were contextual, recently launched capabilities—not necessarily features introduced by build TWD9.231205.001. Treating all of them as December firmware additions overstates the changelog.

Use the watch itself rather than assuming a phone update means the watch is ready. Before checking, confirm the model, Wear OS version, current build, a paired compatible phone, a stable network connection and adequate battery.
- Place the watch on its charger.
- Connect it to a network; Wi‑Fi is preferable where applicable.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Check whether build
TWD9.231205.001is offered.
Charging is important because the watch can defer installation until it is on the charger. A notification is the normal route, but a manual check can show an update that has already reached your device’s rollout phase.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
A Google support-community discussion also describes repeatedly tapping the checkmark on the update screen to trigger another check. That is a community-reported workaround, not an official bypass and it cannot defeat a server-side phased rollout. See the support discussion for the report.
If the update is missing or fails
“My Pixel phone updated, but my watch did not”
Phone, tablet, foldable and watch updates did not necessarily ship on the same schedule. The December 11 report specifically noted that other Pixel categories had received their updates while the watch release was still expected. If the watch is supported and running Wear OS 4, a delay can simply mean its carrier or device phase has not opened.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The update is paused”
Put the watch on its charger and leave it connected. The support-community reports indicate that charging may be required before installation proceeds.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
“Installation or optimization looks stuck”
- Keep the watch charging and idle for a substantial period; optimization can take time.
- Restart only when the process is clearly unresponsive, not merely slow.
- Do not factory-reset as a first response. A reset erases setup and can create avoidable disruption without making a phased update arrive sooner.
- If repeated attempts fail or the watch becomes unusable, contact Google support.
These steps reflect user reports in the Google support thread, not a universal official recovery procedure.
“DND or Bedtime sync is still missing”
Look in the Pixel Watch app’s Notifications area and verify the relevant synchronization controls. A community reply suggested that location, but Google’s menu can change between versions, so use the labels shown by your installed app.
“Image retention remains on my Pixel Watch 2”
The documented fix addressed a reported issue; it did not establish that every display problem was software-related. Persistent retention after updating may indicate a separate software condition or hardware fault and should be assessed by Google support.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Why this release followed other Pixel updates
Verizon’s carrier information supplied the initial December 12 expectation, while Google’s later announcement supplied the authoritative build and feature details. Those are different stages: a carrier can publish an intended date, Google can confirm the rollout, and an individual watch can still wait days or weeks for its eligibility window. Google explicitly described continuation over subsequent weeks based on carrier and device.
For comparison, Google listed the November 2023 Pixel Watch 2 LTE build as TWD9.231005.005.B3 in its November update announcement. That number is not the December build and should not be used to identify this release.
Should you install it?
Yes, if you had an eligible watch during the rollout. The official OTA bundled security, bug-fix and performance maintenance with the model-specific improvements, and there was no paid upgrade involved. A manual check could expose an update sooner, but waiting for the notification was simpler; neither approach could bypass phased distribution. Do not sideload an unverified package or buy a replacement watch solely to obtain these changes.
Current-status note
The December 2023 package is historical. As of August 18, 2026, the documented material here does not establish that TWD9.231205.001 is current. For software released after 2023, consult Google’s current Pixel Watch support documentation and update archive rather than treating this archival rollout as a live announcement.
