That is a meaningful change from earlier Pixel Watches, but it does not make every repair cheap, simple or guaranteed to restore factory water resistance.
What “most repairable” means here
“Most repairable” is an editorial judgment, not an industry certification. iFixit’s smartwatch methodology considers how easily a watch comes apart, whether common failure points can be replaced, the availability of parts and instructions, and the manufacturer’s support. Its scoring system has been revised over time, so scores are most useful when compared within the current methodology.
Repairability therefore covers more than opening the case. A practical assessment also asks whether genuine parts are available at sensible prices, whether seals can be renewed, how likely a connector or sensor is to be damaged, and whether the finished watch can realistically be tested for water resistance.

Why the Pixel Watch 4 is different
Earlier Pixel Watches placed the battery and display behind adhesive and complex internal layers. iFixit’s teardown of the original Pixel Watch found that access was difficult and that reassembly could compromise water resistance: original Pixel Watch teardown.
The Pixel Watch 4 changes the repair path substantially:
- It opens from the rear rather than requiring the display to be attacked first.
- Visible external screws and screw-secured internal parts replace much of the earlier adhesive-dependent construction.
- Replaceable O-rings are used around screws and display sealing areas.
- The battery is held with screws rather than bonded in place.
- The vibration motor uses pogo-pin contacts instead of a fragile flex connection.
- Google released repair documentation for both the 41mm and 45mm versions.
Google calls the watch “serviceable for the first time,” specifically identifying the battery and display as replaceable in its Pixel Watch 4 announcement. iFixit discloses a business relationship with Google, while stating that its editorial teardown work is separate; that context matters because the “most repairable” claim comes from iFixit.
Battery replacement is the clearest benefit
Battery aging is the repair most likely to extend a smartwatch’s useful life. iFixit’s guide estimates approximately 20–30 minutes for a Pixel Watch 4 battery replacement after removing the backplate and a small number of screws. The functional procedure is similar for both case sizes, but the batteries themselves are not interchangeable.

These are genuine parts supplied through the Google parts channel via iFixit, and purchase quantities may be limited. A lithium-ion cell must not be punctured, bent or crushed. If the battery is swollen or damaged, stop rather than trying to force it out.
Google rates battery life at up to 30 hours for the 41mm model and up to 40 hours for the 45mm model with always-on display enabled; replacing a worn cell restores capacity, not multi-week endurance. See Google’s battery-life specifications.
Display replacement is possible, but economics are tougher
Genuine 41mm and 45mm display assemblies were listed at $99.99 each when crawled. That makes the screen replaceable, but not automatically economical: parts, tools and labor can approach the cost of a discounted replacement watch. iFixit identifies display price as one reason the device did not receive a perfect score.
Display work also requires the uncommon 1IP Torx Plus driver, in addition to 2IP and 5IP bits, a spudger and tweezers. The screen-replacement guide warns that even a small dent or deformation in the sealing surface can compromise water and dust resistance.

Before choosing a screen repair, compare the complete cost with the watch’s current replacement price, your labor or shop charge, and the possibility that a damaged case will prevent a reliable reseal.
Water resistance is the crucial caveat
Google advertises water resistance to 50 meters and describes the serviceable design as using gaskets to preserve ingress protection. Product details are on the Google Store page and in Google’s announcement.
A gasket-based design means the watch is intended to be resealed; it does not prove that an individual DIY repair is water-resistant. The result depends on:
- Correctly seated, undamaged replacement O-rings.
- Clean, flat sealing surfaces without dents, dust or deformation.
- Correct screw placement and torque.
- A properly seated display and back cover.
- Professional post-repair pressure or ingress testing, if swimming is important.
Replacement seals are listed separately, including screw O-rings at $2.99 and display O-rings at $3.99 when crawled: gaskets and seals catalog. Do not swim or dive with a repaired watch unless its sealing has been professionally verified.

Manuals and parts make it serviceable, not board-level repairable
Google provides repair manuals for the two case sizes. The official documents include:
The iFixit repair hub links to guides for the battery, screen, back sensor glass and vibration motor, along with teardown and chip-identification information. However, iFixit notes that full schematics were not provided. You can replace modules; you do not automatically gain the documentation needed to diagnose and repair every board component, sensor or chip.

Apple Watch
iFixit’s current table places the Pixel Watch 4 above the Apple Watch Ultra 3. iFixit says the Ultra 3’s battery and display repairs remain difficult and that official parts and instructions are not offered in the same way. This is a model-specific comparison, not a verdict on every Apple Watch generation.
Samsung and Garmin
The available evidence does not establish a directly comparable current score and parts picture for every Samsung Galaxy Watch or Garmin model. It is therefore too broad to claim that the Pixel Watch 4 beats all Samsung or Garmin watches. The defensible statement is that it leads the current iFixit smartwatch rankings cited here, with the clearest documented comparison being against the Apple models iFixit has scored.

Fairphone and Framework
iFixit’s headline notes that the leader is not Fairphone or Framework. That does not mean no niche or modular product could rank higher under a different definition; it means the Pixel Watch 4 is the leader in iFixit’s contemporaneous mainstream smartwatch assessment.
Does repairability make it the best smartwatch?
No. Repairability is a purchasing criterion, not a complete product ranking. The Pixel Watch 4 may suit buyers who plan to keep a watch through battery aging, want documented parts access, or are comfortable with precision electronics work. It is less compelling if you prioritize multi-day or multi-week battery life, guaranteed post-repair water resistance, the lowest possible repair cost, or iPhone compatibility.
Google says the watch works with most phones running Android 11 or newer and requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app: compatibility specifications. It is not an obvious choice for iPhone owners.
Buyer and repair decision checklist
- Confirm whether your watch is the 41mm or 45mm model; batteries and displays are size-specific.
- Check current local availability and pricing for the genuine part before opening the watch.
- Back up data, power down and disconnect the watch from charging.
- Obtain the required Torx Plus bits, spudger and tweezers; a standard electronics kit may not include 1IP.
- Replace damaged or compressed gaskets rather than reusing them.
- Inspect every sealing surface for dents, dust and deformation before reassembly.
- Handle the lithium-ion battery without puncturing, bending or crushing it.
- Have the repaired watch professionally tested if water exposure matters, and do not assume the factory 50-meter rating still applies.
Verdict
The Pixel Watch 4 earns the “most repairable smartwatch” description when it is attributed correctly: iFixit’s current assessment gives it a provisional 9/10 and ranks it first in its published mainstream smartwatch table. Screws, replaceable gaskets, rear access, official manuals and genuine battery and display parts are a genuine architectural improvement.
The qualification is just as important. A $99.99 screen can be uneconomical, a 1IP driver may be hard to find, full schematics are absent, parts may not be available everywhere, and a careful DIY reseal is not the same as professionally verified water resistance. Buy it for exceptional serviceability and longer repair options—not on the assumption that every failure will be cheap or risk-free.
