Its indicators divide the reading among hours, tens of minutes and individual minutes. The original white-gold model was covered in a hands-on report in 2021; GENUS’s current GNS1.2 Dragon page lists several case options and prices, so the historic report and current collection should not be treated as the same product snapshot.
How does the GENUS GNS Dragon tell time?
The display separates the parts of the time instead of using conventional hour and minute hands. On the original GNS Dragon described by Monochrome Watches in 2021, peripheral rotating indices show the hours. The articulated dragon indicates tens of minutes as it travels across counter-rotating wheels, while a separate rotating counter marks the individual minute. Read together, the indicators give the time; the dragon does not show every component on its own.
GENUS describes the current GNS1.2 Dragon as having a sculpted dragon trace an eight-shaped path, with peripheral arrows indicating the hours and the dragon expressing the minutes. That is the maker’s description of its current collection; the 2021 account gives the more granular explanation of the original display. What makes the dragon unusual?
The creature is a moving mechanical component integrated into the indication of time. GENUS says its current Dragon collection uses 11 unique 18K gold segments, each hand-carved. In the 2021 report on the original watch, Monochrome Watches said the dragon’s head was carved from six blocks of solid gold and that its segments had to be shaped to glide from one orbit to another. These are construction details attributed to the maker and the 2021 report, rather than results of independent technical testing.

GENUS’s product page lists the following suggested retail prices before VAT. The maker says price depends on case choice and personalization; gem-set and bespoke versions are available on request. These published prices are guidance, not a transaction quote or confirmation that a particular watch is available.

What the 2021 original’s specifications tell you
The original watch covered by Monochrome Watches in March 2021 was a 43 mm 18K white-gold model, 18.8 mm high, with a domed sapphire crystal and 30 m water resistance. Its hand-wound proprietary Calibre 160W-1.2 was listed with 390 components, 26 jewels, a frequency of 2.5 Hz (18,000 vibrations per hour) and approximately 50 hours of power reserve. Monochrome Watches reported these figures, which are also listed in GENUS’s official 2021 press kit. They describe that launch-era white-gold version, not every later case option.
The official press kit identifies the original as reference GNS1.2 WG DRAGON. It gives a launch-era price of CHF 150,000 excluding taxes/VAT. That historical figure belongs to the original white-gold watch and should not be mistaken for the current collection’s general price. How to assess it against another mechanical watch
The Dragon’s distinctive display is best understood by comparing concrete features rather than relying on broad claims about complexity or superiority. The available sources do not provide a head-to-head test or establish that it is objectively the most complex or best watch in its class. Useful points of comparison include:
- Display and legibility: Check how readily you can distinguish the hour, tens-of-minutes and individual-minute indicators, and whether the unconventional reading suits your daily use.
- Case and wear: Compare the selected material, dimensions and water resistance for the specific reference. The 43 mm diameter, 18.8 mm height and 30 m rating above are for the original 2021 white-gold model.
- Movement: Consider winding method, stated component and jewel counts, frequency and power reserve, while keeping figures tied to the exact version.
- Finishing and customization: GENUS describes hand-carved gold segments and offers personalization; confirm what applies to the configuration under consideration.
- Variant-specific price: Use the current published price for the chosen case material, then confirm taxes, personalization and availability with GENUS or a seller.
Which version does the name refer to?
“GNS Dragon” can refer to the original white-gold watch documented in 2021, while GENUS’s current product page presents the GNS1.2 Dragon collection with multiple case-material options. The 2021 article is historical hands-on coverage, not a current test of every listed variant. GENUS’s collection listing and press-room archive provide additional official collection context.
