Choose the Girard-Perregaux Laureato 38mm if compact proportions, a manufacture movement and a sapphire display back matter most. Choose the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 if you want a larger 40mm presence and the Ingenieur’s more industrial design language. The Laureato is only 2mm smaller in diameter, but its 44.5mm lug-to-lug measurement means it is not a tiny watch on the wrist.
At a glance: Laureato 38mm versus Ingenieur Automatic 40
| Specification | Girard-Perregaux Laureato 38mm | IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 38mm (Girard-Perregaux official product listing) | 40mm (Fratello Watches comparison) |
| Case thickness | 10mm (Girard-Perregaux official product listing) | Approximately 10.8mm (Fratello Watches comparison) |
| Lug-to-lug | 44.5mm (WatchTime measurement) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Water-resistance statement | 100m, according to Girard-Perregaux’s official listing | Fratello reports approximately 100m; IWC documentation states resistance in bar rather than metres |
| Movement | Girard-Perregaux GP03300, self-winding manufacture calibre | IWC calibre 32111 |
| Movement figures published in the cited material | 218 parts, 27 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Crystal and caseback | Sapphire crystal and sapphire caseback | Exact reference-level details not stated in the cited material |
These watches overlap in purpose—integrated-bracelet sports watches for everyday use—but they make different decisions about scale and character. Fratello’s comparison is most useful when it treats movement character, finishing, dimensions and daily wear as the important questions rather than complication count.

Is the Laureato 38 too small next to the Ingenieur 40?
Diameter is not the whole fit story
The Laureato measures 38mm across and 10mm thick, while the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is 40mm and approximately 10.8mm thick in the cited comparison. That is a modest diameter difference, not a small-versus-large extreme.
The more revealing Laureato measurement is its 44.5mm lug-to-lug length, reported by WatchTime. A 38mm case with that footprint can occupy substantial wrist real estate, particularly because an integrated bracelet continues the case’s visual line instead of dropping away like a conventional strap. No wrist-circumference range is established in the cited material, so fit should be judged from the actual lug-to-lug measurement and your wrist shape rather than from diameter alone.

How the two sizes look
The 38mm Laureato will read as the more restrained option, with a thinner 10mm profile. The 40mm Ingenieur adds both diameter and approximately 0.8mm of thickness, giving it a stronger wrist presence. If you normally find 40mm sports watches balanced, the Ingenieur is the safer choice for visual impact; if you prefer compact cases but do not want a fragile-looking watch, the Laureato’s long footprint keeps it from disappearing.
Which watch has the more compelling movement?
Laureato 38: GP03300 manufacture proposition
Girard-Perregaux identifies the Laureato’s GP03300 as a self-winding mechanical calibre made entirely by Girard-Perregaux:
Rank #2
- Girard Perregaux caliber GP03300, beats at 28,800 vph (4Hz), composed out of 419 parts, contains 63 Jewels & has an approximate power reserve of 46 hours.
- Power reserve: Min. 46 hours
“This mechanical self-winding calibre is entirely manufactured by Girard-Perregaux.”
The published specification lists 218 parts, 27 jewels and a 28,800 vibrations-per-hour (4Hz) frequency. The sapphire caseback also makes the movement part of the watch’s visible ownership experience. For a buyer who specifically wants manufacture-calibre provenance and an opportunity to see the mechanism, this is the clearer proposition.
Ingenieur Automatic 40: calibre 32111 and engineering identity
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 is identified with IWC calibre 32111 in Fratello’s comparison. The cited material does not establish a matching parts count, jewel count or frequency for the 32111, so those figures should not be inferred from the Laureato’s specification.
The Ingenieur’s appeal is less about winning a published specification contest and more about how its movement supports the watch’s engineering-focused identity. If your priority is a manufacture label and disclosed mechanical figures, the GP03300 has the stronger documented case here. If you are drawn to the Ingenieur as a complete industrial design object, calibre 32111 remains central to that choice even without equivalent figures in the available comparison.
Rank #4
- Girard Perregaux Caliber GP01800-0008, beats at 21,600 vph, composed out of 191 parts, contains 28 Jewels & has an approximate power reserve of 54 hours.
- Power reserve: Min. 54 hours
- Blue dial with a hobnail guilloche texture
Water resistance and everyday wear
What is documented
Girard-Perregaux’s official Laureato 38mm listing gives the watch a 100m water-resistance rating. Fratello’s Ingenieur Automatic 40 comparison reports approximately 100m for the IWC.
IWC’s own documentation uses a different convention: “The water-resistance of IWC watches is stated in bar and not in metres.” That means an IWC reference should be checked against its specific bar rating rather than treating every metre figure in a secondary comparison as an official IWC specification.

What that means in practice
Both watches are presented as capable daily sports watches for ordinary exposure to water, but neither figure should be turned into a claim of laboratory dive-watch performance. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance, ensure the crown and any seals are maintained, and have water resistance tested after relevant servicing or impact.

Laureato 38mm
The Laureato combines an octagonal bezel with an integrated bracelet. At 38mm, that geometry is concentrated into a comparatively compact case, while the sapphire crystal and sapphire caseback reinforce its polished, mechanically minded character. Its design is the better fit for someone who wants an integrated-bracelet watch that feels architectural without becoming visually dominant.
Ingenieur Automatic 40
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 takes a more industrial approach, with the Genta-associated form cited in the comparison. At 40mm, its broader case gives that structure more visual authority. Choose it when the design itself—not simply the movement specification—is the reason you want an Ingenieur.
Which is better for daily wear?
- Pick the Laureato 38mm for the thinner case, smaller diameter, 44.5mm documented lug-to-lug measurement, sapphire display back and explicitly documented Girard-Perregaux manufacture calibre.
- Pick the Ingenieur Automatic 40 for a larger wrist presence and a more overtly industrial integrated-bracelet design.
- Do not choose solely by the 2mm diameter gap. The Laureato’s lug-to-lug length is the measurement most likely to change how its 38mm diameter feels.
- Do not compare water-resistance numbers without units. The Laureato listing uses metres; IWC says its ratings are stated in bar.
Price and availability
Current regional retail prices and availability are not established consistently enough in the cited material to make a reliable price verdict. These are high-value Swiss watches normally sold through authorised luxury-watch channels. Compare the exact reference, local currency, taxes, warranty terms and bracelet configuration in your market before deciding on value.

The Laureato 38mm is the better answer for a buyer who wants compact proportions without a toy-like footprint, plus a clearly documented manufacture movement and visible mechanical display. The Ingenieur Automatic 40 is the better answer for someone who wants the 40mm case to make the design’s industrial character more prominent. Neither is universally superior: the decisive choice is whether your wrist and taste favour the Laureato’s restrained geometry or the Ingenieur’s larger engineering presence.
