Verdict: The Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic is a highly wearable 38mm mechanical field watch with excellent dial clarity, short lugs and convincing vintage-inspired details. Its main caveat is a specification change: the current listing states 100m water resistance, while 2021–2022 launch coverage described 200m. Buy it as a refined everyday field watch, not as a dive-watch substitute.
What is the Nivada Super Antarctic?
The Super Antarctic is Nivada Grenchen’s modern reissue of its Antarctic exploration-watch family. The original Antarctic was associated with members of the American Navy’s Deep Freeze 1 expedition to the South Pole in 1955–1956, according to Monochrome Watches. The present model is a contemporary watch inspired by that lineage rather than expedition equipment.
Its design uses a matte black dial, applied metallic markers, a railroad minute track, sword and lollipop-style hands, and a vintage-style caseback medallion showing an icebreaker, aircraft, stars and mountains. The dial remains restrained: there is no date window or extra complication to interrupt the time-only layout.
How does the 38mm Super Antarctic wear?
Case dimensions and wrist fit
Nivada lists a 38mm stainless-steel case, approximately 45mm lug-to-lug, about 11–12mm thick depending on variant, and 20mm lugs. Fratello’s hands-on review measured the watch at roughly 38mm by 45mm and around 11mm thick. The short lugs keep the watch compact, so the lug-to-lug measurement matters more than the diameter alone: it should sit comfortably on small and medium wrists and remains proportionate on larger wrists.

The double-domed sapphire crystal adds a gently vintage profile without giving the watch the bulk of a modern sports model. The 316L steel case, screw-down crown and simple bezel make it practical for daily wear while preserving the visual language of a mid-century explorer watch.
Straps and bracelets
The watch uses a standard 20mm width. The supplied brown leather straps were described by Fratello’s Balazs Ferenczi as flexible and well matched to the case. Nivada also offers black leather, Tropic rubber, beads-of-rice, Oyster-style and Forstner-style options, with the current product page showing leather, Tropic rubber, beads-of-rice and flat-link configurations.
Choose leather for the most historically restrained look, Tropic rubber for heat, water and easier cleaning, or a steel bracelet if you want more visual weight and a single-watch everyday setup. Any replacement strap or bracelet must be 20mm wide.
Is the dial and lume easy to read?
Yes. Large quarter-hour triangle markers, broad luminous hands and a clean black background make the display immediately legible. The applied markers and railroad track add texture without crowding the dial, while the sword and lollipop hand combination gives the watch a distinct identity at a glance.

The original production offered three Super-LumiNova colors: white, cream and green. Ferenczi found the cream version notably yellow and less convincing as faux patina, while he preferred the more contemporary appearance of white and green. That is a reviewer’s visual preference, not a laboratory brightness comparison. Select white or green if you want a modern tool-watch impression; select cream only if its aged tone is specifically what attracts you.
What movement is inside?
The Super Antarctic uses the Soprod P024, an outsourced Swiss automatic movement positioned in independent coverage as an alternative to the ETA 2824-2. Monochrome lists 25 jewels, a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour (4Hz) beat rate, hacking seconds and approximately 40 hours of power reserve. Nivada’s current specification gives approximately 38 hours.
The accurate way to state the reserve is therefore about 38–40 hours, depending on the published specification. Hacking lets you stop the seconds hand while setting the time, and the 4Hz frequency provides the familiar smooth mechanical sweep expected of a modern Swiss automatic. The movement is sensible for a time-only field watch, although buyers seeking a manufacturer-guaranteed accuracy figure should ask Nivada for the tolerance of the exact watch they are ordering.
Is it 100m or 200m water resistant?
For the currently listed reference, use Nivada Grenchen’s rating: 10 ATM/100m. Fratello’s 2022 review and Monochrome’s 2021 launch article described the reviewed or launch model as 200m. Those figures should not be merged. They indicate a generation or specification difference, so verify the rating printed for the exact reference and caseback before purchase.

At 100m, the current model is appropriate for swimming and normal surface-water use when the crown is fully secured and the seals are in good condition. Water-resistance numbers are not depth guarantees, and the Super Antarctic should not be treated as a purpose-built dive watch simply because earlier launch material cited 200m.
Current price and earlier launch prices
Prices vary by date, currency and bracelet or strap configuration. The following figures are separate historical observations, not a single price range:
| Source and date | Configuration or context | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Nivada Grenchen current product page, October 2026 | Displayed 38mm variant; the page offers leather, Tropic rubber, beads-of-rice and flat-link choices | US$945 |
| Fratello Watches, 2022 | Leather | €679.95 |
| Fratello Watches, 2022 | Bracelet | €874.95 |
| Monochrome Watches, December 2021 pre-order | Pre-order, with March 2022 deliveries | CHF700 / €650 / US$775 |
Use the current Nivada listing for the final amount: currency conversion, tax, shipping and the selected bracelet or strap can materially change the delivered cost. Older launch prices are useful for context but are not evidence of today’s availability or value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How historically faithful is the reissue?
The Super Antarctic borrows the strongest visual cues of mid-century exploration watches without reproducing their limitations. The matte dial, metallic applied markers, railroad track, oversized luminous shapes and expedition-style caseback medallion create a coherent period reference. Sapphire crystal, a modern Swiss automatic movement, contemporary case sizing and current strap options make it a practical reinterpretation rather than a museum replica.

That distinction matters when assessing the watch. Its historical story adds character, but the buying case rests on present-day wearability, legibility, movement choice and the exact water-resistance specification of the reference you receive.
Who should buy the Super Antarctic?
It suits you if
- You want a compact mechanical field or explorer-style watch rather than a large sports watch.
- You value a clean, highly legible time-only dial.
- You prefer short lugs and a 38mm case that can work across a broad range of wrists.
- You like vintage design cues but want sapphire crystal and a modern automatic movement.
- You want to change between 20mm leather, rubber and steel options.
Consider alternatives if
- You need a verified 200m rating for regular diving or demanding water use.
- You require a published accuracy standard or a longer power reserve than roughly two days.
- You want a date, GMT or another complication.
- You dislike choosing between multiple historical lume colors and bracelet configurations.
How it compares with other field watches
Compare the Super Antarctic with compact mechanical field and explorer watches on the measurements that affect real use: diameter, lug-to-lug distance, thickness, dial contrast, lume treatment, movement reserve, crown construction, strap width and delivered price. Its 100m current rating—or the earlier 200m launch rating—should not be compared casually with a purpose-built dive watch’s rating, bezel and case engineering.
Ferenczi summarized the appeal in his Fratello hands-on review of January 28, 2022: “The new Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic might just be the nicest time-only budget watch out there.” That is an opinion rather than a measured test result, but it captures the model’s central proposition: strong proportions and legibility at a price positioned below many Swiss heritage-branded alternatives.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact reference and read its current caseback or product-page water-resistance rating.
- Choose the configuration—leather, Tropic rubber, beads-of-rice or flat-link—and compare the delivered price, not only the head-only price.
- Measure your wrist against the approximately 45mm lug-to-lug length, especially if you normally wear watches below 38mm.
- Select white, cream or green lume based on appearance; published coverage does not establish a brightness ranking.
- Verify that replacement straps and bracelets are 20mm wide.
- Check stock, currency, tax, shipping and return terms at the time of ordering.
The Bottom Line
The Super Antarctic is worth considering if you want a compact, legible Swiss automatic with genuine Antarctic-inspired design. Its strongest practical advantages are the 38mm/45mm proportions, short lugs, 20mm versatility and uncluttered dial. Confirm the exact reference’s water resistance and current configuration price before ordering, because those details have changed across generations.
